    Hi Tom.
    Absolutely lovin your channel..Excellent content and bloody addictive..
    I have been a Spark since '83, 4 yr apprenticeship..worked on; domestic, commercial & some major industrial jobs over the years..
    Always done little domestic jobs, but then took the plunge about 16/17 years ago..been good..been lucky to meet some great folk along the way, it's been tough though..but rewarding..
    It's refreshing to see how you work, it is very much mirrors how i/we approach/complete work, but I am an old school dinosaur now and nearing the end of my career might squeeze another few yrs but have already started to wind down a bit..love the vans, love the bike, funny as I can really appreciate a tidy/quality van & have been riding bikes all my life..we have had our VFR 800 for 20 yrs this month..
    Keep up the fantastic work, you are a bloody credit to The Trade Bro..can i suggest; Y'all please wear some PPE..you only get one pair of eyes/ears & lungs..apart from that crack on..
    But what do I know ? Lol..
    Hope you Yall staying safe (and alert) throughout 'lockdown'..
    Best Wishes to you and the team.
    Ron E Cavron.

    When I was a young kid in the late 1950's living in St Johns wood the window cleaner used to come round on a push bike with a ladder over his shoulder and a bucket on the one end and a tool bag on the other.

    Rough arsed light fitters lol, using bell wire! :-D boils my blood. At least use 0,75mm double insulated copper flex. there's a lot of current there on that Secondary side. Great video as usual, stay safe out there Tom.

      I thought the same thing. Those LED strips pull a lot more current than most people would expect, in this case it’s probably in excess of 100W.

      He never changed the wire just burnt joint does that not mean it will happen again but maybe burn house down next time

    • @garethev5866
      @garethev5866 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      justice music not necessarily, shit joint = high resistance and that equals heat, but to be honest I’d not have left it, that cable is way too thin.
      I’d have used the bell wire to pull through a thicker wire, not a lot more effort and a much safer job....

    Bali, a scooter rider would take you and the entire contents of your van and still have space.....
    Worked there for a while, use to see Dad driving, good lady wife three kids and four chickens as a normal load. Bamboo long enough to flex down at both ends and touch the ground, 25 foot plus.
    What I would say not the safest method of transport. Not sure it would work in London during ‘normal’ non lock down times
    Great content as usual 👍🏻

  • @dogwalker666

    Yes you always get a volt drop across the Triac even when fully on on the Industrial ones you have to fit a bypass contractor to reduce losses when on full. Also DC has a habit of if it's just a little bit loose it will burn it an be a massive problem on old crane's etc.

    Where do you show the fix?
    Why did it fail?
    Is bell wire sufficient to take the current?
    Looking it up bell wire has a current capacity of 1A. At 24V that is 24W. Assuming that the tape has 5050 LED's that is 14.4W/m. Not sure of the dimensions of the room but that is a significant current capacity. The LED driver should be driven at about 80% capacity. I see trouble ahead.

    • @paulhalgarth1164
      @paulhalgarth1164 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's what I was thinking. 5050 tape with 60 pixels p/mtr is usually about 1A p/mtr. Bell wire is definitely not suitable.

    • @davidwhitehead6150
      @davidwhitehead6150 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on - if left on that bell wire you’re going find yourself called back there very soon Tom🧨 From the size of that room and the Driver, that initial stretch should be on 1.5mm2.

    That bellwire is probably really undersized to carry that kind of load. And also, with an electronic driver, it can have plenty of voltage under no load, and then decide to do 2v under load because it's being a git.

    Is that LED Strip run as a ring or a radial? With that length (I'm guessing 14m or more), if it is a radial, there will be a fair voltage drop by the time you get to the end of the strip. Not a factor in this particular problem, just an observation.

    • @Blitterbug
      @Blitterbug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a few strips; they just connect in series until you reach the driver's rated capacity - after that, they will get dim. Dunno what the voltage drop might be at the end of the strip...

  • @AK90
    @AK90 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Is that LED strip fed from one end? If so there is a lot of current passing through the first 2 meters of LED strip. Had that issue at my neighbors place, ended up having to split the LED strip in the middle and feeding it from two ends. Also, that bell wire is way too thin for that application. Most people dont realize this but LED strips pull quite a bit of current.

    • @rgtsparky
      @rgtsparky 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looked like it! What you can also do is is leave the strip whole and feed power in at both ends if you are using one driver. Helps with volt drop too. I noticed that this particular driver had an output of 3.33A which could very well be close to the max of that bell wire depending on how it was installed as well as the lengh!

    Nice fault finding, I didn’t see the whole installation, but I don’t think the bell wire is up to carrying the current, at 24v and the length of strips, I think that cable is underrated, you can see the current draw from the conditions of the burned out connectors!
    I think I would have recommended a new cable from the driver to the led strips.
    I might be wrong as I didn’t see the full installation .
    Anyway, a good faulty finding video.

  • @davidlee4966
    @davidlee4966 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In situations as detailed where you have a suspect a cable run, following disconnection I always short one end and carry out a continuity check from the other end, a quick way of confirming an open circuit or a confirming a suspected high resistance value, before getting stuck in finding that elusive joint which someone before you should have never put in.

    Just a question though. Why did you leave the old bell wire in place? Surly the issue should be fixed not patched. I know nothing...but my thoughts would be to swap bell wire with something just a little more current capable, so the fault dose not happen again, or cause other damage.

    I've been working as a theatre technician (live events, theatre etc) for about 3 years. With the current climate, Im a tad bit afraid of actually getting back to work because of finaicial viability of shows with social distancing. Plus it's always been a big aspiration of mine to actually become an electrician .
    I have a very good undstanding of being an electrictrician from my previous job but lack the qualification and higher understanding to become an electrictrician. Is there a route you could suggest I take to become an electrician as I cannot take up an apprentice wage as I currently have to pay for my own housing etc.
    Love your videos, really hope you can help!

    With regards to the fault finding, it's no different in motor electrical. Test the individual parts to ensure they're working, move on, I tend to clump parts into systems and then test each system individually.

    You seem to have the streets all to yourself. Pity it can't be like that all the times. Less stress, peace and quiet.
