Hey Steve, love your videos! So the manifold pressure for these is usually 3.5 in. wc. and when you back off the outlet pressure you are probably bringing it down below that number. Are there any other adjustments you can make to improve efficiency? I just adjusted my gas valve down to 2.4 in. wc. because my CO was around 3500 ppm at the factory pressure which is 3.5 in. wc. That is a whole in. wc. lower than factory spec, kinda freaked me out.

Verify inlet gas pressure then manifold pressure and check chimney draft . Note- If the pressure is turned to far DOWN you might have issues with the burners lighting correctly at some point and flash out when it lights the main burners or not lighting main burners across evenly. Lots of times people change the vent pipe with the incorrect Diverter pipe height is critical at skirt to boiler

Most people will not experience any symptoms from prolonged exposure to CO levels of approximately 1 to 70 ppm but some heart patients might experience an increase in chest pain. As CO levels increase and remain above 70 ppm, symptoms become more noticeable and can include headache, fatigue and nausea. At sustained CO concentrations above 150 to 200 ppm, disorientation, unconsciousness, and death are possible. I guess the short answer is 70 ppm but 0-8 ppm the normal background is best or get curious why. I just read CO detectors start alarm at 50 ppm. Quoted from US Product Safety Commission. seems like this just has a set screw thats it right? can you adjust based off the output gas pressure to manufactures spec (say 3.5 WC) with manometer or do you need combustion analysis device? is the readings off because the output pressure was out of spec, or because you did some very fine tuning? i did a good deal of calling and i havent been able to find some one who does combustion anaylsis in my area. I would like to just buy a manometer and check the gas pressure and call it a day .

Nice video Steven, No offence but you dont need to do a sooth test on gas fired equipment, sooth tests are only done on oil burners. As you mentioned before complete combustion is the key, i would have this customer nominated for a new boiler in the near future O2/CO2 level can be much higer O2 3.0/4.0% CO2 9.5/10 a lot off extra savings. Testo 308: The digital smoke tester is a hand-held instrument for determining the smoke number of oil firing installations. These systems can be monitored using the testo 308 and checked for compliance with the applicable limit values.
you got lucky meter didn't lock up, i have 310 and it looked up for 24 hours after like 1800 ppm, so i had to wait a day to finish what i was doing. Generally they don't recommend to keep probe in if it's that high, just check it quick and if reading going up, decrease pressure and recheck
Have you looked into the testo 308? It gives you a digital reading and also paper sample. You can sync it up with the 320 too for printouts. Nice video.
I just did a PM on that same boiler on Saturday. I was getting a slightly high CO reading too ( around 150) couldn't adjust that shitty gas valve they put on that Burnham. All of a sudden it dropped to around 50 so I let it be. I'm not sure if maybe my meter wasnt reading correctly cause I left it in the cold truck overnight.
Did that furnace have a fixed regulator and fixed orifice? I have a 23 year old Trianco Heatmaker-M2 boiler, which started kettling 3-4 years ago. I added a temperature controller, which monitors the water temperature at the input to the boiler and interrupt the heating cycle, before kettling can begin (beats waking to a cold house). Yesterday the exhaust CO was measured at 100ppm, according to the tech from the gas company. Then I throttled the gas supply, by partially closing the ball-valve - just enough to hear a change in the flame, the tech told me the CO dropped to "0". The tech was concerned about operating the boiler with the ball valve partially closed, but we are in a cold snap (who isn't right now). Since the boiler CO is acceptable ("0ppm"), I'm not shut-down, but need to service/resolve the issue. Trianco is defunct; sold off to Waterpik, then ???? There is a 3rd party parts supplier, or two), but Trianco-trained service techs aren't going to be available, nor will support. My boiler has a NON-ADJUSTABLE valve/regulator [description: "gas valve, negative pressure, White Rodgers"], which looks very much like the one you replaced. It also has a fixed orifice, for which replacements can still be purchased, in a set of three (different sizes, I assume(?)). The kettling issue came on suddenly and the water in the system is almost 100% the same water I filled it with 23 years ago, so mineral accumulation in the boiler coils shouldn't be the cause. After watching your video, I'm thinking that maybe the regulator wore out and is no longer regulating properly, is at all, so the gas flow is too high. (Orifice replacement won't fix that.) Seems that maybe an adjustable valve/regulator would be better than the non-adjustable original! THANKS!

Hey steve I got a problem with my boiler, The pilot is on but when I turn the thermostat on the boiler won't ignite, I was braking some concrete on the basement I don't know if that has anything to do with it or is the gas valve, how can I find out?
The Chosen Honeywell valves such but the one he used isn’t that bad. I have just as many issues with Robertshaw. The small Honeywell valves used on most new modern furnaces (like all the air ease/Armstrong valves) are complete junk though
word to the wise. when using flush pipe adapters always use steel like you see that Steve is using never brass or bronze. i've seen them crack before...t

That old valve IS adjustable, the small slotted screw next to the phillips screw on the top right corner of the valve is the regulator adjustment.

Those honeywell valves are the worst! I had two brand new ones out the box that were no good...Use the robertshaw 24v gal valves instead

Every gas appliance has high co on light off. Best not to put the combustion analyzer into the flue till after it has ran for at least 10-15 sec
