Yes. They are ripping out the entire heating system this summer and putting gas forced air with central air conditioning. If they were going to keep it I would have suggested a sediment trap. The valve I replaced was pretty old so It lasted at least 20 years with out the sediment trap.
I'm an HVAC contractor mostly in facilities maintenance (better pay/bennies) the trend now for a/c companies is that they are hiring (sales techs) not service techs which they show up to your house and walk around your unit and come to the usual conclusion you need a whole new system. Sales techs usually do not know how to fix anything or want to, it's all about the sale/commision and better for the company owner, more profit.
I'm all for business making money I do a little up selling myself. What you are describing and and what this customer experienced was very excessive in the sales and up selling. This customer plans to switch over to forced air before next winter and didn't want to put much money into this older boiler. Thanks for commenting..
Our furnace died twice this winter (during extreme ND sub zero days) We were able to keep it going thanks to TH-cam and Amazon parts. The one thing that hasn't needed replacing yet it the valve. Thanks to you I know what to do if/when that happens. Thanks!

The thing that gets me about HVAC work is the local part supply houses won't sell to consumers. I wouldn't even mind paying a markup to them for the ability to get parts that day. However, they force me into shopping online to where I cannot even support a local business. Fine; I'll buy that flame sense rod, that gas valve or the 4 speed motor I've needed to fix my and my relatives HVAC in the last 5 years.
When changing a gas control, the pressure needs to be set to the specifications of the appliance. Usually for a boiler or furnace the setting is around 3.5” w.c. Most valves come close to that from the factory but I’ve seen them all over the place. The only way to know for sure is to check it with a manometer. Also, although not required, it is good practice to perform a combination test after changing the valve. Not trying to knock you or anything. I know you do good work. I’ve watched your videos, but a job like this should only be done by a licensed HVAC contractor. They have the tools and the knowledge to make sure the job is done properly and safely.
I had a licensed plumber install a garbage disposal that FELL OFF a week later as I was doing dishes. A licensed HVAC contractor tried to sell me two $130 blower fans for my AC units. I refused. My neighbor fixed them both with a few squirts of 3 in 1 oil. I had a licensed contractor who tried pour concrete directly over 14 ga. Insulated wire. When it comes to contractors and tradesmen, I trust no one and You Tube everything.
I asked if the fan could be lubricated. The guy said "no, it's sealed". My neighbor had the same unit. We took out the fan(s) removed the fittings, squirted lubricant in there, and put it back together. It lasted about 2 years. Regardless, the guy flat out lied to me.

If a company says they don't work on your system and it needs replaced THROW THEM OUT (do not pay them)! This is a relatively simple boiler, any tech with any experience should have been able to repair.
I have 2 identical furnaces, one in the attic and the other in the basement. I had a tech replace the gas valve on the attic unit 10 years ago, because the pilot knob got stuck. The new valve he installed is 1.5" shorter than the original. Now the basement furnace gas valve pilot knob is stuck. I purchased the identical gas valve that the tech installed on the attic furnace. I tried to locate the tech who replaced the attic furnace valve but their small company is no longer in business. I called a new tech to replace the valve but he wants me to get a new furnace. I just need a longer section of inlet pipe 0.75" x 6.75", to install the replacement valve. Do they sell the black cast iron pipe in various lengths? I am a retired Electrical Engineer and I have experience replacing my gas hot water heater.
As a handyman in Milwaukee, WI. How do I go about finding an "emergency supply house". The other day a water heater went out and luckily home depot was still open.
The Handyman I call myself a "contractor" on the side but work for a property management company 8-4. I just finished my interview to get into an electrical apprenticeship. Got a 90.5% grade on an interview and a 6 on the aptitude test. So I'm hopefully to get into that. BUT, if you need a hard working apprentice let me know! Lol
In my area, its very hard to purchase replacement parts over the counter if you are not licensed HVAC tech. They say they are protecting their industry.

While expedited delivery usually works.... for same-day emergencies I have a good relationship with an HVAC guy that I've given and sent work to and he's happy to call in a part for me to pick up locally from time to time.
I have an account under my business name with several suppliers around town. I have been in the business in this town as a superintendent, project manager and general contractor. The key is don't call yourself a handyman.

I I gave them my general contractor license number and they pulled me up on our Tradesman verification website...."sorry you need a valid HVAC license number to order parts a general contractor's license won't suffice" 😆. Not the end of the world as there's always a workaround. I came across a similar headache trying to order a replacement cast iron drain grate directly from the foundry but was told I couldn't buy from them, I had to buy through one of their authorized wholesale accounts which added $50 to the part cost just for them to create the purchase order.... Great business model if you're on the wholesalers side of it though!

That valve is known to not open and close 100%. that valve is open 10%. I have found the installer used to much pipe dope on the connector fittings it was blocking the gas flow or plugged the screen on the gas valve also.

It's an Adjustable Slip Nut Wrench also called Adjustable Sink Wrench... they are used a lot by plumbers that work on those big chrome nuts that you see on urinals etc... you can find them on Google/Amazon or Home Depot/Lowes in the plumbing area GREAT VIDEO HANDYMAN!!! Keep up the great work!!!
At 4 minutes 55 seconds, the junction looks like a reverse thread. I am getting stumped on getting off this fitting, which looks like your pipe juncture on steroids.

This boiler is 3.5 IWC the valve is also set to 3.5 IWC

Most places the pipe would come down to a T and you would have a dead leg with a cap on it for particles the full into it with T off to the valve

I found many of that style not shutting down 100%, but I had a $3500. gas detector machine.
I had the same problem on my furnace but the furnace was 30 years old. The valve was $200 and a new furnace was $600 so I got the new furnace.
do you do crown molding?
I have done it. I'm not good at it. I usually make a jig to cut the crown when I do it. Its not easy to do with one person.
