  • We upgrade to RPM 2.5 Ton Aluminum steering for the Jeep JL. And initial opinion is,,, WOW super tight and happy with the decision to buy new steering. There were numerous things about the previous system we foresaw as problematic so decided to jump in front of it before it got to that point.

    The harbor freight ball joint puller came through for me today getting the drag link separated from the pitman arm. Thanks for the tip! Worked flawlessly.

    If you give the knuckle a couple hits next to the ball joint will knock it loose and save your threads, also measuring your old TR/DL length is more accurate when installed

    Thanks for the video as always. Probably has been brought up. Keeping the nut loosely threaded and hammering that will save the studs threads. Once loose you can remove the nut.

    on that seized TRE it should have been VERY HARD hits with the hammer on the face of the knuckle to knock that out. i've had to take full on swings before with a 5 pound hammer to break stuff free on other vehicles.

      and I find it's a MASSIVE UPGRADE from Steer Smarts. SS stabilizer is really nice. :) Other than that, the whole system is flawed. My steer smart drag link and tie rod ends now reside in my JUNK PILE.

    Great video. According to RPM notes, the jam nuts have to be torqued to 200 ft -lbs

    Always leave the nut on a few threads when hammering on tie-rod end. No mushrooming

      Well with filming and 2 trips to the harbor freight... we were going from 12-5.... thou 2-2.5 hours is more then enough time to tackle this job, pending having the right tools and the ends not fighting you 😝

    Wow, that is really close. Do you not fear that vibration from the crawling could have the drag link, tie rod, and stabilizer make contact causing some type of disruption? Anyways, awwwwwwesome video and great technical detail on what must be done when installing. Arrrrrgh, make it tight Moe, lol.

      as we wheel, Ill adjust the stab. there is room to rotate still. Glad you enjoyed the video, steering is one of those things that look simple but is a lil more complex :)

    Ice it down tie rod end then heat it after that it is easier metal move with heat and cold

    I was just looking at upgrading to the rpm. I have synergy rods now and they are definitely better than stock but the RPM seem to be more stout.

      Synergy isn’t bad... but there are a handful of short comings with it.. things as I see as potential headaches I rather avoid... and yes... this one is massively stouter...

      Well you did go from a 1 ton to a 2.5 ton so i would hope so.
      Im swapping the stock rubi to the 1 ton rpm aluminum.

    One way you could have done it is turning the castle nut upside down getting a flush and then tapping it down that would have worked as well

    Fantastic upgrade! I wanted to go 2.5 ton but already had headaches with clearance issues with my hydro assist and my 1 ton is 1.5 diameter so I imagine 2 inch diameter would be another headache lol

      This is something to always consider.. clearance...never enough room for all the upgrades we want. I had to take off my steersmarts track bar when I put on a thicker diff cover... they weren’t jiving

    What do those anti flop/ anti rattle pieces at 9:00 do over the original black boots that come with the kit? Is it just to make it tighter/stronger?

    I used a hydraulic jack with the pickle fork to get my tie-rod off when mine got stuck. I just jacked the end of the fork for leverage and the tie rod popped off.

    Question I actually got this as a birthday gift from my mom but she got me the rubicon model instead of the non rubicon do you think there is enough thread for me to still use it with the rubicon having wider axels I would prefer not to return it and have to wait for the package to return and then the replace to be sent lol

    I had troubke taking mine off like you, at least my pickle fork worked, eventually. I cussed, pounded and cussed more. Wrecked the boots. I replaced with metal cloak stearing. Mo betta! Hows the anti seize in a can working out? I get messy with the paste .

    To my calculations you can get the stabilizer for 170 the relocation bolt for 25 and the kit with shipping for 1313.84 and the alignment will cost approximately 80 witch brings the total to 1418.84 if you do it yourself and shipping was 43.87 to Texas so this is a total of me or someone close to me shipping might very thanks for the content Mo

      What exactly are you talking about? This kit is $880 with the stabilizer relocation bracket... shipping was about $40 for us as well 920+ your 80 for alignment comes to 1000... 1025 with the bolt? We are on different pages here lol

      It’s dumb not to... their ends are similar in size and cost less then half... I’m not spending $200 an end when it’s time to replace... and u don’t just replace one...
      But steersmarts have not failed me yet... they claim it will last forever... thou I doubt....

    Did you consider metal Cloak before buying that one. Was there instructions on this kit by the way. Seems like a good learning experience. 👍

    Why not try a torch on the knuckle? I WAS gonna run out and grab one of those ball joint pully thingamajigs, but...pass. thanks got saved me 3.50..lol. 👍👍👍

      Meh, torching the knuckle would likely cook the joint anyway... that puller always performed clutch for me in the past... go figure when I highlight the tool it fails LMAO

      So steering on the jl can be a headache... so many things to change out... are landing on lifting? I don’t think there is sufficient room for this under the jeep if it ain’t lifted

      My Jeep can't steer with out a hydrolic system helping in off road , your Jeep still close to stock so should be ok it dose help thu but bad for daily driver have to slow down more on roads

      Lol... I’m considering making a video about why... as I knew it would be asked... it’s not so much it failed... more so that I foresaw future problems with it and had suspected it was causing her bump steer

      So the half on the axle... is the synergy track bar relocation bolt. On the massive Tie rod... we used the rpm clamp bracket.

    Liking the RPM steering. Not liking the Jam nut coming loose after tightening to 200ft-lbs. I lock tite'd the nut, hopefully it will be less likely to move.... and this is with mall crawling, not even trail running.

      As long as u are picking a stationary spot on both sides... however one needs to be on the front of the tire, on on the rear.
      I wouldn’t say it’s wrong... there are multiple ways of getting it done... bringing attention to my unsuccessful attempts dropping the TRE..
      I find it easier to get an accurate reading on a flat surface rather then the tire...

    Get a bigger hammer. And when you have to hammer straight on the stud put the castle nut on upside down and hammer on that. Will not ruin the stud

      Legitimately fairly priced... $800 for both.. plus another $70 for the relocation bracket.. wanna say steersmart cost me around $1300-1400 when I bought it....
      Synergy was about $750 if I remember...

      I did three synergy tie rod and Rubicon express draglink. 480.00. Works for my 10% wheeler and curb climbing 😁😁😁

      It’s holding strong…. The only thing I’m not liking about this setup… they don’t coat the TRE bolts… this leads to rusting.
      Steersmarts on the other hand DO. This protects them in the long run…

      @@JLLIFEOFFROAD I have stearsmaets but they have had issues and there customer service sucks. In fact a bolt broke on my drag link on a trail. That was a nightmare. Thank goodness I was with good friends. It will be on trail militia soon. . I just ordered what you have.
