I always wonder how Bach would have played these pieces, (or other musicians in the tradition) and I think the expressiveness (Giorgio writes espressività non comune) you get from "agogic accents" and timing is what made Bach the virtuoso player he was known to be in his youth.

Yes I too felt the pathos in Ms Massini's interpretation, yet she didn't romanticize Bach. I suppose she was able to bring out the inherent quality in the music. Beautiful and very satisfying performance.

I cannot agree. Most pianos are tuned in equal temperament. Bach wrote these pieces for a harpsichord tuned to a modified meantone. On a piano, much of the intended expression is lost. Modern concert grands romanticise baroque music and their power swamps the often delicate writing.

In this temperament it sounds very unsettled and disturbing, but I'm guessing it was the effect that Bach wanted.
