Pain “ALL In The Brain?”: The Dangerous Oversimplification of Pain Science

  • The medical system focuses on the mechanical model of pain despite copious amounts of evidence pointing to the involvement of the brain. But these advancements in pain science have caused this huge pendulum wing to the opposite extreme, where claims are being made that ALL pain is ALL in the brain.
This is a HUGE jump from one extreme to another and both viewpoints are dangerous oversimplifications of the pain experience.
In this episode, we’re discussing the complex nature of pain and how it's not just a physical sensation OR purely a psychological experience and the need for a multifactorial approach, integrating physical, mind-body, and neurological approaches.

    ABOUT ME:
    I'm Alissa Wolfe.
I'm a chronic pain specialist and the founder of the Chronic Pain Breakup Method. I help people who are fed up and frustrated with chronic pain retrain their nervous system so they can beat chronic pain and get their life back.
In other words, if you have chronic pain and are looking for a new and improved way to manage your pain with an approach based on neuroscience, I'm your girl.
I got out of the clinic and started my online chronic pain coaching business so I could provide that nervous system retraining piece that is missing from pain management in the health care system.
Empowering people with chronic pain is my calling. I wasn't okay knowing that my patient's with chronic pain had no one to turn to, no one who would help, and no one who would believe them.
I decided I would be that person, even if in the beginning I didn't know everything I needed to know to help them. I pushed myself to learn and I discovered that we were trying to treat the "tissue issue" when people with chronic pain have a nervous system "pain problem".
Changes in the nervous system were contributing to pain and yet no one was addressing those changes.
By adding this element of neuroscience and nervous system retraining to my treatment approach, clients and patients are getting better than ever.

Thank u Alissa! I broke my right ankle last summer. While xrays indicate its healed properly my pain continued. In form of numbness, tingling (electrical pricks) and stabbing pain. Also transferred to unaffected left foot. was diagnosed with CRPS. Have seen a few of your videos. An MRI has been ordered to check for nerve impingement or structural damage. Doing minimal physical therapy. Taking ACT therapy. I agree with your position that it’s not all one way or the other. Questions: 1) what is somatic training? Is that the same as EDMR (spelling?) 2) does mirror therapy help if unaffected leg also has some pain? 3) do you take calls or FT with Canadians? Thank u.

Thanks for listening! 1. I'm not the best person to describe somatic tracking since I've never officially done it or been trained in it. I do know it's not the same as EMDR. 2. Mirror therapy *could* help if both limbs are affected but it depends... need more info to answer. 3. Yes, free phone consults even for Canadians. There's no international calling fees since we have the same country code. :)
