There is a cultural thing that stands out for me here.
In my tradition (Native), when we meet people for a collaboration, we want to find out that person to know them. We ask family questions, personal likes and such to see if there is common ground. We are building a relationship first. We don't like to work with people we don't have a heart felt bond with.
Anglo white folks in particular, when they try to get into working with us, they go right to numbers, contracts, details on logistics and profits. It puts us off because their is no human/family factor to it. As a result, we are almost speaking different languages. We don't trust people outside of our family circles easily, so we get put off by them.
In this series, Avon had more going for him as far as building relationships with those close to him. Marlo was corporate and cold with employer-employee dynamics. No warmth. No trust.
Actually, Marlo really didn't seem to have any joy in life. Where were the small things that really matter in life? Like heartfelt laughing and sharing bonding experienced in day to day endeavors?
Avon seemed to have more of the little things in his life that make the human experience.
If you weigh this in, despite getting out with a lot of money, Marlo is the loser here.
Even in shitty prison, Avon has people who love him. People he can joke with and enjoy small moments with. He can express himself rather freely and be himself around those folks without having to put up walls. He also showed humility when his boxing was brought up and he kind of shrugged it off, implying that he wasn't all that super at it. To show vulnerability and limitations takes true spirit strength. He also donated to Cutty's gym with no wants of recognition. He did it from the heart.
Marlo, despite being free of prison, lives in a mental and emotional lock up that is cold and devoid of joy. He has nobody. Not one person actually likes to be around him. No one really trusts him. He can't open up with people if they are forced to be around him. If the fear wears off, people will either ditch him or turn on him. His heart was ice. He never gave freely to anyone. Every move was calculated to benefit him alone.
Neither guys were saints but Marlo walked the hollow path. Avon walked the (albeit flawed and fucked up) more human path.
When either of them goes, the indicator will be who shows up to their funeral? I can't see anyone going to Marlo's unless it was out of forced obligation. No one will miss him.
At the end of the series, Avon is locked up but Marlo is living a walking death. So starved of feeling alive, he had to return to a corner to feel something. He is truly enslaved by a "game" that doesn't give a shit about him and he has had nothing else but that and it forgot him within mere minutes. Truly a pointless life.

Marlo was the ultimate opportunist. He was able to take advantage of the growing rift between Stringer and Avon. He was also able to take advantage of the Barksdale organization losing their best soldiers. Marlo would have had no chance against Avon if he tried to take over in Season 1.

Marlo's downfall was mistaking FEAR for RESPECT. The way Marlo runs his operation is (poorly) comparable to a tyrannical dictatorship. His "iron fist" mentality, lack of empathy, and the value he places on power/strength definitely helped him to rise to the top, mainly because of of the surprise-factor and eagerness to kill the opposition was hard for his rivals to defend against, BUT all that was the reason he was unable to hold his top-dog status...
Tho similar in a lot of ways, the main difference between Marlo and Stringer's approach was people were WILLING to work with Stringer but we're FORCED to work with Marlo. This made it so anyone working under Marlo as head of the Co-op but outside his organization, considered Marlo an enemy that they were constantly scheming against. So when shit hit the fan, Marlo had nobody in his corner that wasn't already dead or in jail awaiting trial!

Two scenarios for Stringer Bell to take. 1) Step away from "the head of the table" as Joe put it. 2) Call on the Co-OP to act cooperatively in dealing with the Marlo situation. I actually liked Marlo's way of handling his crew better than Avon because while Avon respected the game and treated his crew like family, he tended to be a little too lenient in a few situations where I thought he should have been more authoritative especially with Stringer. I could see Stringer turning on Avon a mile away but I think Avon was so blinded by his love for String that he ignored obvious red flags and by the time he knew String was a real problem, it was too late. Marlo on the other hand was cold as ice and would body you for the most minor infraction. While this may seem heartless, you have to understand how the streets work at that level. Small problems usually turn into bigger problems if you let them fester. Anyone in your crew sees signs of weakness and they will take advantage. No doubt... These are the streets and there ain't no honor among hustlers in the dope game. Everyone is trying to come up. So Marlo had to keep sending messages that he's not to be fucked with or compromised. Like Sonny said in A Bronx Tale, "I'd rather be feared because fear lasts longer than love."

Prop Joe wasn't afraid of Avon only because he had minor advantages but Joe always tried to negotiate his way out of stuff.

The Wire had the ability to make you feel sympathy for the most despicaple people. I actually felt bad when Marlo got Prop Joe killed because it appeared that Joe was teaching Marlo the game. And in the way he was. But I remember you mentioning that one thing about Joe is that he is part of the honest snake archetype. On the surface his actions seem genuine but he always has another motive. I never put together how Joe was actually partially responsible for D'Angelo's death and how he manipulates events in such a way that it can't be directly traced back to him. It shows how astute Marlo was because he knew that Joe would eventually betray him and took care of him before he became a problem. I'm definately an Avon fan but the more I study Marlo the more I respect the method to his madness. Cool how your analyses are coming out right as I finish all 5 seasons.

That was Joe's skill set. He knew he couldn't rip and run and fight for territory like Avon and Marlo with the muscle he had, Cheese just didn't think to far in the future and was driven by childish tendencies. So Joe even as a youngster understood his weaknesses and worked on honing his verbal skills. And unfortunately for him he ran into someone who studied the game as he played.........Marlo. Notice how Marlo responded to getting beat in poker with the old heads, he just sucked it up and learned, cause he knew he'd eventually catch on and beat them. Marlo seen how Joe was playing people into one another, even Stringer didn't put it together when Joe was playing him. Joe knew it was the perfect time to come at Stringer when he little to no muscle, Avon was locked up and Stringer was under pressure to hold on to those towers with a weak product, just a matter of time.

It seemed like Levi, Herc, the Greeks, Joe, & Avon all had a part in Marlo's downfall... The Greeks got Marlo back on a cell phn when it was Joe getting them off of them... Marlo's ambition to be number one along with his insecurity for his name like you mentioned, is just like Avon said, "There's always going to be a Marlo". Meaning, in my perspective, that people like Marlo are common rather than being rare within the street game. Which in a sense, is once again Avon throwing shade at Marlo for being nothing new, along with the subtle, "You ain't nothing like me". Marlo isn't a legend, just another king that is unknown within history 'cause he didn't do anything that would make him stand out from the rest of the other kings. Egotistical and gets easily triggered by insults thrown out him through rumors, which is something powerful people in my eyes don't do. Powerful people do not give a f*ck about what others say, and they definitely do not act through retaliation because of it. Because that mentality is common goon mentality. So what Marlo is in my honest opinion, as a title for a king, he is just the Goon King. A perfect title as he left no legacy for the street to remember him for, as his character was so common in the game. Which is quite fitting as Marlo's last scene is literally two random street guys not even knowing who he was as he got stabbed. While Omar on the other hand is long dead, but still remembered as a legend in the streets. Because Omar, unlike Marlo, was not triggered by random words nobodies were throwing at him.

Marlo was the only one who won in the game. Came out with his MONEY, his health, and never went to prison. But, he lost to himself because he did not get the Street Cred Avon, Omar, and the rest of them got. He was quickly forgotten. Marlo was never there for the money. He was always there for the POWER. He reminds me of Frank Underwood from the show "House of Cards." You name ringing out, even when you are out of the game, is POWER.
*"Such a waste of talent. He chose money over power. In this town [Washington DC], a mistake nearly everyone makes. Money is the Mc-mansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Solid comparison, but - regarding the introduction scenes, Avon was already huge, and Marlo was on the rise, that kinda changes perspective. Because Avon, lecturing D or not, still can't really afford a murder pinned on him or his crew, whereas Marlo rolled it street wise.
Remember the scene with Lex? He easily could've retaliate against the whole crew, and take the corner (like one of his soldiers proposed), but his response was more Avon-like: no need to stir shit and drop bodies over a weak corner, take out Lex and that's it

Marlo was like a "what if". What if you mixed Avon with Stringer? He's the answer to that question. He wanted to wear the crown and for his name to ring out like Avon, but had a lack of respect for the game like Stringer. He was smart enough to allow others to teach him, but did not mistake those teachings for anything that he should reciprocate. His view of his own life as being something fleeting definitely affected his view of killing. The way Hector played this role... Quiet, emotionless, but calculating... made Marlo scary asf. He had no ties. The writers gave him no family, so there was never a point that you could see a balance to his character. Even Chris was revealed to have a family. Marlo was just a Grim Reaper.

This was truly impressive, king. I was almost spellbound. While watching it, I thought of hyenas and how they interact: the matriarch is the leader, and while all the other hyenas bite each other here and there to establish their position in the hierarchy, the matriarch bites everyone but is bitten by no one. She takes food from other hyenas, and is the first one to eat when they share. However, if she is too brutal too frequently, eventually two of the hyenas in her clan will try to kill he - or at the very least run her off. She cannot make it on her own in a field of lions and Cape buffalo so that is a death sentence regardless.
This is the problem with personalities like Marlo and Stringer. Since they are willing to do anything to vault to the top and maintain that position, they will eventually run afoul of people within their own organization. For example, Marlo created another arch-nemesis like Omar due to his viciousness (Michael). Avon, I think, was the most well-balanced gangster of all - realizing the game doesn't even exist without having a clan in good order. Human relationships have to be maintained; granted, his love for Stringer also shows that a king has to deal with a heavy hand sometimes to keep a monster from rising within his ranks.

Your analysis is brilliant, the psychology is deep. As in a chess game, Marlo beat Stringer and prop Joe at their own game. One question, although Stringer and Marlo were the same, what was Stringer lacking that led to his demise ?

Thanks bro I appreciate that. & The episode was called middle ground. So both stringer & Avon’s demise was a result of not finding a middle ground. I got a video coming for you 💯

Have been a wire fan since the beginning and have listened to and watched many commentaries on the show. You, with out a doubt, have given the BEST insights into the show that I’ve seen. Year’s after the show’s ending and unfortunately the death of Michael K. Williams, you’ve created a second chance to enjoy the show and to see the genius that went into producing and delivering it. Keep do’n the D@mn thing Brother, lov’n it!!

For Marlo it was ALL about wearing the crown.Marlo love the streets,he loved the power, and he loved having the rep of being The Man.He was sensitive when it came to his name and rep.I don’t think Marlo and Stringer were similar at all.String was of the mind set…let’s make money and open legit businesses and make clean money. Also stringer only killed when necessary.Marlo was all about the crown and taking territory.Marlo would kill you just because he could…example the security guard, Marlo was dead wrong for stealing the Taffy and killed the security guard because he spoke up.Marlo was at the business gathering with Levy and those city hall people he still left and literally went to the streets and got into a fight.Look at Marlo’s reaction when Levy went to jail to visit him to tell him that he was getting out but he had to give up the crown.

Think deeper. Stringer wanted his name to ring bells in the business world. Just like how marlo wanted the streets to respect him. Stringer was prepared to kill clay Davis! Just because clay finessed stringer out some money. It is not a death sentence in that world! But stringer was willing to take it there. Just like he tried to bully Andy krawchek! Stringer and marlo are very similar. I feel you two are not looking past the surface. So you don’t see it. You can’t look at marlo based off actions alone. You have to study his intent. Just like you study the intent behind stringers actions!

@@professorxaviour3649 Stringer took a street mentality for revenge when it came to Clay Davis which was dumb on his part.Stringer should’ve went to Levy to consult him about the business he had with Clay Davis.Killing a State Senator would’ve been a bad move and I believe he would’ve came to his senses even without Avon telling him not to do it.Now I still believe Stringer and Marlo aren’t similar…Stringer got one foot in the game and one foot out.Marlo is knee deep in the game and don’t give a dam about legit business.I’ll go back to what I said before about Levy introducing Marlo to all those business people and politicians.Marlo didn’t care about being there that’s why he bounced.Marlo and Stringer are different in that way.

True but honestly Marlo paid attention to everyone that's how he for a quick second he wore the crown he listened to every word Joe said. Marlo was ruthless no mercy for an opp but he listened, the scene where he & Stringer talked in that bando Stringer said something about Marlo Benz being a straw purchase afterwards Marlo didn't show his money with expensive cars or other wise. When Joe talked about phones he stop using phones except for how the Greek told him about coordinates. Marlo was actually a student of the game which was Joe downfall cause he took everything from Joe & flipped it that's why Slim told Joe watch Marlo he up in some shit.
