Thanks a lot for your valuable contribution. I was 16 in 1973, the first year i went to the 24 hours of Le Mans. The sound of a V12 Matra automatically and imediatly brings me back 45 years earlier (!!!) to this magical race. There was also an other car, with an other kind of extraordinary sound, a Chevrolet Corvette C3 driven by a quite cute french woman pilot named Marie-Claude Beaumont. At the end of the race, we did have access to the pit-lane and i got a autographed photo that i still have at home!!!
I saw the 1972 Le Mans winning Matra at Goodwood on Sunday. When we saw it in the pits, petrol head partner said, 'When they start that up, you'll be amazed' and I was. I loved the growl as it approached and the scream as it went past and searched TH-cam for that sound. I found it in this clip. Thank you so much!
This car in the streets of a small city...just imagine you must drive to work at 4.30 am - your neighbourhood will ove you...😀😀😀 But the sound is awesome!!! I´m living in the european Alps - here you get an extra echo for free!😃
the best sounding car ever , no dude it sounds beter than any f1 , today supercars , racecars , sports cars just sound like shit comparing to matra v12s thanks for uploading
Not better than any f1, because a version of this engine was run in the Ligiers of the 70s. It was a sprint version with more hp, higher revving and quicker accelerating due to lighter vehicles. It truly had a unique sound, even compared to the Alfa and Ferrari v12s of that era. 787b was a rotary and while it is a special sound (actually quite painful), you can’t really compare to piston engines. I consider myself to be very fortunate to have been able to hear these all live (not tv). It was a very special time for motor racing.
Thanks. We were using a Panasonic and JVC cameras although I didn't realise mine wasn't on HD mode. The clips aren't as smooth as the raw footage is but its the sound thats the most important part!
Thanks for this great compilation. I travelled 1500km to hear and see these cars. Remember them from the 70's. One of my all time fave cars. And driven by real gentlemen. Got to meet Rick Hall after his 20 lapper. He was totally chuffed and a great guy! Great vid quality too ... what camera do you use. Cheers and thanks again, Art
Thats a heavily modified De Tomaso Pantera that was used during the 1980s by Kevin Bartlett. It has a full ground effects chassis which helped Bartlett win the Sports GT Championship. Will put up more footage of the sports cars over the next few weeks. Thanks
Pantera was so under rated, and under powered in it's original form.. I'm so glad the most of the racers saw the potential in that car, and a power plant that wasn't stupid expensive to modify and get big numbers out of.. even a heavily massaged over 351 was miles cheaper than a ferarri v12, etc.. really a 427 ford Cammer belonged in that thing, but the Cobras m gt 40's had dibbs on those plants.. a big German v12 , would be great in that chassis as well.. so much potential there, under rated car for sure.. Matra, simply the yard stick by which we measure how a racing car should sound.. there's the 670, and everything else..
There is no better sounding car in the history of mankind. There may be different, but there will never be better!
the classic blue & white Matra 3 litre V-12 howling away like a wild animal.
Nothing like it ever again,
the early 70's were a good period in racing.
This car embodies everything I love about motorsports.
Thanks a lot for your valuable contribution.

A beautiful metallic scream which I remember echoing throughout the "Boot" at Watkins Glen!

It has no dislikes because you can NOT dislike a V12 Matra's sound! :')
This is how a proper race car should sound.
the lines on this car is also mighty fine... love it!!
