I was fortunate enough to be at a Can Am race at Laguna Seca in 1977. There were several Mclaren M8's racing. Laguna Seca kind of sits in a valley and the echo of those big block Chevy engines was like rolling thunder sounds off the hill sides. Once in a lifetime experience I'll never forget.

Used to watch the Can-Am series at Road America. "If the ground don't shake, it ain't real racing" Some of them still show up every year for the vintage races.
My view of the track was from the pit area. I was a mechanic and tire changer for one of the Winston West grand national stock cars racing that day also. So, my view of the track was the cork screw down the hill, around the sharp left turn onto the front straight and under the bridge and a ways past that. The Porsches were there too, but didn't impress me even though they were faster. Could hear the McLarens seemed like halfway around the track. They had some bark. .
I had a 68 396 Camaro with 4 speed and 513 gears, back in 79-80 with the same GM part #3994094 cam as these. This was in my work car. He wasn't injured but a flag man was hit right before McClaren hit the wall. I never heard if he survived.

Probably Aluminum Flywheels and the Crank Dampeners (if they even had them) helped with that. They seemed to rev from an idle to 8-9,000 rpm and back to idle again in the blink of an eye.... It made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end every time I'd hear them Rev them while they were sitting still.....lol.

There is an AVS Mk.1 in California and I've sat in it. Between the insane driving position(you have to place both feet to the right sideways as the tunnel is to narrow to have your feet pointing straight)and the fact there is absolutely nothing except that wedge nose in front of you, you'd have to be mental to want to race one of these. They look like insane shopping carts. This was what I imagined ripping through grocery stores when I was 7 with the coolest looking shopping cart, I could find leaving wheel marks all over the nice floors lol.
Absolutely love the rad setup on the orange shadow
My favorite slot car from was Tyco in the early 1970's was the UOP Shadow. Still have the set.
I didn't realize they had built so many Shadows! Excellent video.
I remember when these monsters raced at Brands Hatch. They used to thump your chest as they went past!
This was the most incredible class of cars !!!!!!! Wish they would come back !!!!
#16 Wee, light and powerful. The center of mass looks goofier than it needs be, with intelligent rads and ancillaries, adorable. Although the other Shadows make me more comfortable, open minded design/fab along with subtle aero tweaks catch and hold my eye's focus.
Intercoolers on the wing is so epic
I caculated the cost of all the hay bails and it comes close to roughly $264,952.32 USD. WOW
Pretty sure it's straw, but yes, it's a shitload- caught my eye, too!
Not trying to be a know-it-all snob, but alfalfa hay is usually twice the price of wheat straw.
It takes balls of steel to tame this monster.

@@tonflo1 I'm remember being 12 in Shitcago in '82 hearing that line. It was a nationwide channel.
Perhaps it was the shrooms...
Earliest you could have heard it was '86 according to Wikipedia. Was not on until mid '90s in CT.

@@tonflo1 My memory is a bit..."foggy" from that era. Too many Pop Rocks & Jolt sodas. I'll never forget blowing out speakers in that era though.
My neighbors liked it so much, they tossed rocks through my windows, so they could hear it better. Good times!
My parents had a neighbor who raced in a SCCA sports car class. One of my first trips to Sonoma raceway I was introduced to a car the fans called the blue devil. It was a Lola ca am car. The neighbor said he had seen this car at laguna seca where it was capable of speeds in excess of 200 mph
Good old sledgehammer big block. Even when they didn't make sense, they kinda did. 💪
The most outlandish Series was the CanAm series. Engineers delight. I remember watching them at Mosport.
Now those cars look like a bunch of fun to drive. I’m old school ✌️🇺🇸
Best sounding car of FOS 2024
strong candidate for one of the most All Ate Up With Motor of all time
Man i love can am cars
I was fortunate to be a kid back then and growing up near Riverside International Raceway. Saw Many of Can-Am races, and the original Shadow then. And now - you wouldn't believe my H.O. slot car collection. Nor my track set ups.
I recall seeing them race in the 80’s in Thundersports.
Back in the day……….1970’s + I think when I was about 20+ I was a massive motorsport fan and I very much recall these guys running a team on a shoestring, I assume, and thinking that they were taking everything to the limit!
The cars were tiny and I recall Jackie Oliver driving this car in the Can Am series which was fantastic against the cars from McLaren etc.
Boy was that one of the greatest periods of motor racing with Oliver, Amon, Hulme etc going at it hammer and tongs…….brilliant!
Man, sounds Sooooooo good! Seems like anytime he gave it over 20% throttle it got busy in a hurry! Wow
Hearing those motors i would be walking around with a woody😂
The best race cars ever
What a machine!! Thats a big go cart from hell!!
And it ran in 10 Can-Am races! Don Nichols never had to drive the thing because had he, he would've scraped it from the start.
Love these mad creations, they look like what you get when you ask a 4 year old to draw a race car 😂
That is heaven.
I watched all of them roll up at 0:39 and the first thought in my head was *WACKY RACES* from 1968
As a drag race fan, I believe I have found something that makes me smile just as much. What is this class???
Can-Am also known as Group 7
Tire shredding torque, you just can't beat the sound😂❤
Had the pleasure of watching these cars at Elkhart lake Wisconsin nothing like it wish they would bring back these cars
I used to be a huge road racing fan back in the '70s, when these and the Trans-Am cars ruled, but no more, today's IMSA is just a shadow of what it once was.
