    I've gone on hundreds of miles/kilometers of walks and hikes with the OM-5 in all kinds of weather including heavy rain and driving snowfall. Paired with the m.zuiko 20mm, 12-45mm or 60mm macro, it is the perfect companion.

    Just brought the OM-5 with the 14-150mm lens after 14 years with Canon DSLR camera. Can not believe how light it is and how great the photos are. This will be my travel camera from now on. Fantastic built in features for the price.

      I'm thinking of buying a Canon RP or an Om-5. I currently have a Nikon D3300 and have taken this camera in use to see if I like shooting. I love nature, architecture and for now it's a hobby but I want to make money from it in the future. Maybe you can help me make a choice?

    Nice review. Balanced, realistic, and use case focused. Not just a spec "hero or zero" review.

    Hi there, Such a lovely review, I am looking for a lightweight and compact camera to use on high altitude expeditions in the Himalayas and I am expecting to get good quality photos of other mountains from the top of the summit. which would be a great? is it a best option? I'll be very grateful if you guide me. Thank you.

    Given the minor feature improvement, do you think it's worth while upgrading from the old EM 5.3?

    • @handel1111
      @handel1111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i think not, Em1iii is miles better, metal body, dual card slots battery grip and etc

    • @jamesbowmanphotography
      @jamesbowmanphotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Second hand market for a used EM5 .3 is about £650, so you’d be paying £550 for an updated processor with starry sky auto-focus, live ND, limitless video recording (vs. 30 min max) plus the ‘OM System’ logo on the front instead of ‘Olympus’. So nope.

    • @WhoIsSerafin
      @WhoIsSerafin ปีที่แล้ว

      @handel1111 I would disagree after putting the em5 mark 3 through it paces, dropping it, banging it against walls and having it out in two hurricanes ive become a big supporter of the plasticbodies. Also, I've noticed keeping it in a car in the Florida summer it stays much cooler than my metal body cameras like x100v. Plus, it has a slightly higher resolution viewscreen then the em1, and the viewfinder is glasses friendly where the em1 isn't. I much, much, much prefer the smaller body which is why I'll never get the em1/om1 body again.

  • @scottgarriott3884

    Beautifully shot review.
    I'm thrilled that there's now live-ND in the 5 series (No, E-M5 III does NOT have this)! (and quicker hi-res, better IBIS and better IP rating). But other than that, this doesn't build much on my already slightly old M5 III. If a couple surprising failures in the OM5 could be corrected, the OM-5 might be much stronger against its competition.
    1. I wonder how much of a construction issue changing to USB-C would be. Does this require a new main frame or extra machining, or is a plastic insert used on the side of the camera? If an insert, maybe bitter complaints by reviewers early on will convince OM to switch their manufacturing to the modern connection type.
    2. The old-style menu system. Surprising omission here! Could this be modernized with a firmware update (or simply installed for production by OMS)?

    • @dmsphoto17
      @dmsphoto17 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would have to agree with all your points Scott. I'm all for positivity as many of the OM System videos about this camera tout, but a main point is that the Company is trying to sell a us something so we want to be objective and honest in our assessment. That said, the form factor and feature set may make this a great choice for some. I'm an OM-1 user and must say I was disappointed by the OM-5 as an evolution of the line as I was hoping to consider this as a secondary, smaller companion to the OM-1. While I do appreciate the form factor and the positives Scott mentioned above, the OM-5 seems like a re-purposed EM-5iii, perhaps, strictly an economic decision and a way to use "spare parts". Doesn't seem like a customer-driven decision. I feel it was a missed opportunity for OM System to make an offering that was more compelling and competitive in today's marketplace.
      I remember when the original EM-5 came out. That was more of a game-changing camera of the time - 10+ years ago. It was my favorite, everyday photography experience. However with this new iteration, keeping the same sensor as EM-5iii is dated. Why not boost the resolution of the OM-5 and make it the distinguishing feature of the line - something in the 25-30MP range? Keeping the menu structure the same (especially when you have an updated menu system) is dated and kind of a baffling decision - There's no crossover benefit (continuity), for a person using the OM-1who wants an OM-5 as a companion body. No USB-C? Again a dated omission. No joystick? A dated omission. Why not take same approach as other companies and carry-over AF features to lower price-point models? A dated decision. No updated EVF, a dated decision. As a current customer, seeing offerings and updates from other companies, this feels like a let down.

    The spec list says this camera has exposure smoothing for time lapse shooting (Interval mode ) - this seems new to OM System/Olympus cameras. It would be fab if you could make a video looking at this, please Gareth. It might make this camera a great option for holy grail time lapses.

    Going to probably buy this camera, because there's no other for macro at its price range. Needs to be cheaper than 1100e in late 2024. This is what is stopping me from buying it.

    Would be nice to actually see you shooting with it. I still trying to figure out if the AF is faster or more precise then the M5mii I had, which was good for landscape, but clearly not fast or precise enough for street photography. Until then, Ill stick to the M1, which is bigger, but I get 99% of my shots sharp.

    • @gordon3988
      @gordon3988 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both I suspect! For most of us though: OM5 if small and light and mostly outdoors use is key. A7C if less often outdoors, size (including for many lenses) not quite as important and perhaps more talking head (it’s IBIS is largely non existent for video- though you can add an extra step of using catalyst browse). Struggling with same call…either a good choice I suspect.

    • @HokKan
      @HokKan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Marketing issue. It's an updated EM5iii. Due to branding change, they've now moved to OM naming convention. It's just a version ii of the EM5iii. Just like how the GH5 got a GH5ii update. The GH5ii was very well received, lots of incremental updates that people wanted, just like what the OM-5 has. Updated magnesium alloy body instead of plastic, reinforced tripod mount, HHHR, faster processing, Live ND, Pro Capture, etc.
      Funny how something as simple as the name can influence perception of a product huh?

    • @HokKan
      @HokKan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another problem is the timing of the release. Panasonic released the GH5, then GH5ii, then GH6. Olympus released EM5iii, OM1, then OM5. Releasing the flagship OM1 first gave people a certain expectation for the next body. Coupled with the new name of OM5, people were expecting a brand new camera that shared similarities with the OM1. The GH5ii didn't have this problem, because the GH6 wasn't released yet when the GH5ii was released.

    • @HokKan
      @HokKan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So essentially, the name of the product, coupled with the elevated expectation that came from the recently released flagship OM1, is what created this poor perception.

    Tagline should be more akin to a 'reasonable or good travel camera' vs 'perfect travel camera' because though it is a fine camera, perfection it is not. Let's be real. You have an option to take any camera on a dream trip and you expect somebody would choose this instead of a Leica SL2 or Sony a7r5 or Om1 or Canon R5 or a Fuji XT5? That answers your question is it the perfect camera, answer not in the top 50.
