    I think I subconsciously do this when I’m playing well because it feels like I can’t go wrong. Definitely hit it further when I’m feeling confident.

    Mark, Coach, Check out Tour Tempo, essentially the ratio of backswing to down swing is constant (universal disclaimer applies) while the total time to complete the swing reduces. Moving up a rhythm is a bit easier using the tones. Unfortunately distance gains are not guaranteed.
    So quick, quick should be quick, quicker.

  • @PetSKi67
    @PetSKi67 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick-quick is defenately correct. That falls into the pattern of mainteining your normal rythm, yet tempo and effort is higher. Instead of trying to hit hard, I have allways thought of swinging fast, as fast as I still can maintain my balance and positions, I want to hit throughout the swing.
    Normal to quick is a mistake. As Coach spoke at the tee, it takes you to the an easy hitting position, where you have to put in more effort from a position, which does not support the momentum of a higher speed downswing and maintain club path as it should. The muscleing faster forward will ruin the balance.
    And yet hitting quick-quick, it shall feel calm inside, if the rythm is correct. The sequencing is the same, exept for the shorter intervals on each bodypart delivering.
    Good work guys! Keep it up and films coming!

    Quick quick. I want to see coach go quick quick for a whole season. I reckon hesitation is the cause of alot of his misses. When he hits them flat-out I think he misses less. I wonder if stat guy has any numbers in this.? Awesome vid guys. Moral of the story, $400 worth of gym membership, might get you more gains that $400 worth of driver.

    One of most constant pieces of input I’ve gotten from every coach/pro is that my back swing and transition are too fast...which causes inconsistent strikes. When I relax and slow down the back swing I always hit more consistent shots. It also seems to add distance to my woods (though Irons are a bit shorter).

    Dr Sasha said on a show that in all his 3D studies, he found one thing that separated levels of golfers and it was club face rotation. The good pros are stable through impact even compared to a high level amateur. Rarely talked about,

    I’ve not read the article this idea has come from, but it seems that by having a faster back swing they are trying to elicit and stretch shortening cycle and really make use of the elastic component of the muscular system to generate more force and therefore more speed.

    Very interesting. As someone who is constantly been told that my tempo is too fast, this might prove my critics wrong. The danger is that if you swing back too fast, then you could struggle to get your weight moving forward, or worst case, loose balance.

    I suggest that you consider getting stronger, which becomes even more important once you get past forty years old. Changes to your already well designed technique as a Pro can maybe find a few yards, but adding muscle and better tone can find chunks of yardage. I’ve been doing a weightlifting and stretching program regularly since January and it’s paying off. I’m now hitting my driver 30 yards past my golf buddies who used to be equal or longer than me. Where I used to have to game manage around trouble off the tee, I can now just bang a driver over it most of the time. I’ve picked up similar type gains on my irons. Plus, a lot of the aches and pains I used to have are now gone. The older you get, the harder you have to work at it to get stronger.

    I played quick quick 25 years ago and was constantly told to slow down even though I felt in control. Not sure my back will take a quick quick swing anymore but concentrating on removing any tension in my shoulders and arms and releasing my wrists has kept my distance up.

    This is interesting. I tried it on the range yesterday, then took it to the course. I'm a 11 handicapper, but driver is one of the best clubs in my bag. Short term results are positive. Honestly, I've often thought, more time swinging is more time for stuff to go wrong. I think if you're good a ball striker, good hand eye coordination, go for it. I will be working on this, to "learn my patterns". Thanks Mark!

    What ive found on my journey down to 4hcp at 60 yrs old is I move my big muscles fast and early on the backswing and my fast muscles slow and late. When I was a hacker I did it completely the other way round, as do most athletic/sporting males that take up golf as an adult not having played as a child.But I still have to fight the urge to whip the club away with my hands/arms but luckily nowadays my good lowerbody action saves me,most of the time!

    I think a golf swing is personal and there are loads of ways to get it done.
    I think this ideas work well with individuals that have a grasp of their swing and their tendencies. If I were to employ this swing thought, I would introduce too much tension which pulls me out of sequence. Nonetheless, it is an interesting conversation. Dr. Sasho gave you two a shout out on Twitter.

    "Quick quick" - At almost 50 years old I remember seeing the quick quick from a young Seve and a young Langer. Then you have the "Faldo" method which was very dominant for a spell too. We all have physical gains to make from our own bodies which are much greater, as you pointed out Mark, than any gains from tech. Interesting topic to follow up.

I've always tended to be quick quick but I'm not good and I benefit from slowing down in the old school style because finding the sweet spot gives me a better result. I think maybe with some core strength work it might be worth a try ......very thought provoking as always

    Tried quick quick a lot at practice and always see gains. Got to get past mental blocks on course, as tend to loose rotation with speed when actually playing. Reckon my peripheral vision of seeing where the ball flight may end up keeps the ‘head down’ too much and therefore locks the body over the ball. Then I end up all arms!

    we used to play around doing this when we youngsters- I was taught in the hit it straight then learn to hit it longer mould of the 1960s. Specifically discussing change in tempo which I think this is most about. We used to say if you had a fast tempo there was less to go wrong ( it seemed ) if you swung fast fast as opposed to slow fast. I don't recall anyone in my peer group staying with fast fast none of us could hit the middle of the club consistently enough. What I can tell you was all the big hitters were big drawers of the ball though- there were big gains to be had on the ground carry....

    Quick-quick makes sense when you consider tempo. If you're trying to increase clubhead speed, then to keep your tempo the same, you need to increase your backswing speed. Obviously, if you try to swing harder on the downswing after your normal backswing, you have changed your tempo.
    Interesting study. Keep up the good work

    I actually have started swinging the driver Quick Quick over the past few months and have noticed about a 15-20 yrd increase in driver distance. 100% see this data in my own golf swing. Don’t use it for my irons and wedges though as I have way more accuracy with them when doing my regular backswing I’ve done for years.

  • @fretless05
    @fretless05 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For really good players (not me) that can control the club through the swing, I think the idea is to really load power into the shaft when you transition from backswing to down. If the club is moving quickly going back, when you trigger your lower body, the club will continue back, which should give you lag and load the shaft to really propel the head through the hitting zone. I'd think the timing will be harder to master, but if you can do it, it should increase your distance significantly.

  • @greasby1golf871
    @greasby1golf871 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It makes sense, as a sprinter we use our arms to drive our legs and try to have very light contact points, don’t forget if you stamp into the ground your actually loosing speed into that ground, they key to speed is to maintain control and balance not trying to force the speed just let it happen through timing and technique. The pros are definitely taking this theory to the course going down this route in gaining yardage particularly Bryson the extra weight isn’t for speed it’s for the base and stability to produce the speed. Lockeys running probably giving him the base to maintain balance and accuracy with the extra speed.

    Fifty years ago I watched the great Eric Brown playing in a pro am at Dalmahoy Golf Course near Edinburgh. He was partnered by a sixteen year old single handicap golfer from a local club who had won a competition to get to play with him. The young lad was swinging his clubs faster and faster trying to hit the ball the same distance as Eric Brown. He talked to the boy on the tee and persuaded him to slow his backswing down saying you cannot hit the ball on the backswing, but you can set up for your downswing. He got him to slow down saying fifty yards back 200 yards through gives you 250 yards, within a couple of swings the boy was hitting it further than he had ever hit the ball by maintaing that tempo.

    One issue for older golfers like me is the potential for injury in upping speed. I have taken to a markedly faster iron swing in the last three months. I video’d my swing and compared it to a pro’s and county players I know. My backswing is very slow. I changed it to same rhythm as Tommy Fleetwood . It was a light bulb moment. All I did was a much faster backswing I gained so much extra distance and with know loss in accuracy. It’s explained in John novosel book tour tempo. I just hope my 49 year old back will hold out lol.

  • @GeoffPrice

    I recently started doing this after seeing an older video from someone else on this and my total distance (don’t have a good way to measure carry), has increased by about 20 yards and my accuracy has actually increased. Moved from 38% to 47% fairways hit. I’m not a great golfer. I attribute a lot of these gains to thinking only about speed, not 9 other swing thoughts. The only issue I have is my misses are much more pronounced.

    • @canyonaro
      @canyonaro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done it and there's really no "straighter" or "less straight." But there's a clear directional pattern (based on my timing).
      FOR ME:
      Slow/slow sucks in every way so I just use normal/normal as the baseline.
      Slow/quick - blocks to the right, but much stronger than my high, weak block to the right. Better release but I tend to throw my hips at it & hands get stuck.
      Quick/quick - long and left. Consistently.
      I'm 100% sold that training my body to do quick/quick is the right approach. But any change requires practice.

    ‘QUICK QUICK’ Great ideas! It would be interesting to track body movement to see if the quicker take-away increases body turn due to the momentum going back. When I try to be too deliberate in my back swing I sometimes get tight and struggle to complete my shoulder turn so this idea might actually help. Another thing to try out!

    Something that Mark will not mention, given his views on shaft flexes, is that if you are gaining 5+mph of clubhead speed AND you have changed your tempo it's possible you will need a change of shaft to help manage the timing/loading changes. One for TXG to discuss I think

    • @MarkCrossfield

    Swinging flat out on the course I have not been able to measure any gains, or losses, since I've never found the ball after a flat out swing. Tempo and an 80-90% effort puts my ball on the fairway - only about 180 yds average, max 200 yds, but at almost 74 I'm happy with that. As well, there's a much lower chance of doing myself a mischief.

  • @theelmagoo

    I've been experimenting with this the past few weeks, and I think like anything else in making a swing change, you have to work up to it. I've just been doing it over the course of a practice session where I'll start with one club starting at my normal pace, and then trying to get quicker a little bit at a time. Being a guitarist though, I can tell you the best way to build up speed is using a metronome and the right kind of tempo practice. You keep building up pace, but you have to make sure you go a few steps past where you can no longer play it perfectly (i.e. you will be make some mistakes, but you need to push yourself into that red zone). Then back it down again to where you can play it perfect, and usually you'll find you gained some pace over where you last were able to play it perfect. Great video as always :)

    I’d suggest quick quick just extends the length of your backswing, club head in the corner of your left eye at the top. Longer backswing more time to accelerate back down. I get between 5-10mph clubhead playing the long swing. Allowing the lead arm to bend on the way back if necessary for us oldies

    Hey Mark, awesome video mate. Been waiting on this since Golf Science Lab did one similar which I took away and found genuine gains myself when applied and wondered if it was just a fluke. Goes to show in a market where drivers are literally designed to the same limits, understanding and applying the basic physics that a faster backswing allows more force to be applied earlier and for a longer period of the downswing will far outweigh any design changes and “gains” in next years driver. Keep up the good work!

Sure, it will work for 3-5 holes but then i revert to my normal tempo and the ball goes everywhere. I think there's truth to that but I think technical issues are at play too and that's what I'm paying them to figure out. So far none of them were very useful. Hey mark love all of the strokes gained stats and talks. Would be interesting, maybe on a podcast, to talk about Brendan Todd and see where he is making up the strokes. Since he is a very short driver

    Very interesting data and for me working on my fitness and strength has gained me 10-20 yards by being able to swing quicker but with more control whilst still using a 6 year old driver ( this backs up your driver testing over the past 10 years videos) - ability to swing faster adds yards not flashy marketing speak!

    I've personally seen the jump in speed with quick-quick during training. The way you presented it it appears to be all 'feel', the quickness. Like to see is quick, "the time is takes to complete your back swing" (quicker being less time), or is it just moving the club back faster (more speed backwards than normal)? Do you shorten your backswing when you do it quicker?

    Quick Quick. Before I saw this video I started trying a faster backswing due to seeing Bryson’s new swing. I am seeing the benefits of it straight away.

    Tremendous stuff, Mark and Coach; add this to Buzza's study and there really is something there. It can be socially draining to try this stuff even at the range, because it is inevitable that some older low handicap player or "old school" pro from the club will waddle up and start scolding me about "getting quick". I will persevere, but that stuff gets really irritating after a while.

    I'm always intrigued by swing speed videos and the prospect of finding a combination of body movements and swing thoughts that translates to optimal gains for my game. So far, I find lifting my left foot and "slamming" it down helps with overall hip and shoulder rotation as well as timing. It definitely has helped with overall swing speed, although overall accuracy is still a work in progress. I think I'm going to try a quicker backswing, too, to see how it feels alongside the other swing tweaks. Thanks for the great video!

    Wow! That's a significant difference. Fascinating that the dispersion doesn't suffer when adding mph! Were you surprised that that was the case? Not sure that I (at my ancient years!) can hit "quick quick" but will definitely give it a try when out on Monday. Lots of food for thought. Thanks both!

    Quick quick... I have a terrible problem with swaying back on the backswing if I go quick. My most consistent golf comes when I’m Matsuyama slow. Might give it another try but the jump at impact has given me extra distance

    I have a fast swing tempo and I strike it pretty nicely. When I try to slow things down for “control”, I actually lose control. I end up blocking myself or getting handsy because I’m trying to slow down. My body is just naturally used to a quick back and through tempo. I’ll roll with it.

    Quick quick. I have to watch out for strike. I been trying the heel-heel stomp and if I over do it, topped driver all day long. Went for fitting and instead of new driver, fitter got me changed up to hit less toe strike and got more yards out of mine similar to the $700 driver and shaft combo

    I love this type of content, who doesn’t want ideas on gaining distance! A great follow up would be to compare both your swings. Is Coach physically stronger more flexible or do you swing differently? If strength is a factor, which muscle groups are we talking about?

    I may be wrong but Im sure Ive heard somewhere that big hitters dont accelerate the butt/handle to much more than 20mph, they just do it at the right time. The only effective way Ive found of doing this is by pulling on the handle with the left side from the ground up with thigh/glute/hip/side so that you load and release the shaft. A good practice drill strangely is 5-10 yd chips with a 6 iron from normal/wide stance working on all lowerbody action passive arms.

    I’ve done this swing since day 1... thought process is “Boom, Boom”. First “boom” is said at take away so you go fast... second “boom” is when you hit the ball so you release all speed. About .5 seconds between the two.

    Golgi tendon and muscle spindles will provide a stretch reflex at the top creating more potential for a quicker downswing. The faster you transition the more this will come into effect

    All mark has to do is close the driver by a degree or so and he won’t fade with a quick quick. This is Super.

    I used that same test with a PGA professional who went from 112 mph Club speed up to 122 mph in around 5 swings, dispersion grew slightly with the ‘quick quick’ but very interesting.

    I tried quicker takeaway last year it’s great when I can sync up but it’s like 2 out of 10 shots the rest are off the planet right and doesn’t feel in control
