  • Increase your golf driver speed and what have I gained. Mark Crossfield talks driver speed and increasing your swing speed. How much can you gain realistically with your club head speed and what distances can you gain from trying to hit the golf ball further. Hitting longer golf drives and keeping the ball in play is proving to be a huge advantage in the game of golf with players like Bryson Dechambeau demonstrating that in the 2020 US Open. Taking more on with huge golf drives can help your approach play while at the same time help you score better golf scores and reduce your handicap.

    You have touched on something that is quite funny to me. I came to golf from a career in cricket. The first coach I sought out immediately set out to scrub all of the cricket from my golf game. He wanted quiet hips, quiet wrists, low handle presentation and so forth. Time passed and I worked hard to remove these and mould my swing. I found I got straighter, but much shorter. I have now got another coach, who is putting most of it all back into my game, and low and behold, I'm 44 years old 6' 4" and regularly driving 300+ Meters (325+ Yards). Using my hips to turbocharge the body uncoiling pulled my ball speed up from the late 140mph into the high 160's. (I cracked 180 on the indoor simulator on the weekend) The big issue was that I was pivoting around my left hip (right handed golfer) instead of rotating through my centre of mass. I went from a dozen swing thoughts to one "swivel and smash!" which is basically "hit it as hard as I can."

    Fit for golf is a great programme. I've used it, and I feel the difference, not just on the golf course, but how much better physically I feel on a general basis. I've also dropped off working the programme through the summer, and it's just excuses. Watching this video of yours has provided me a kick in the ass to get back onto the programme. Thanks Mark, and thanks too to Mike Carroll.

    This is very good info..In a previous video you and Matt did, showing how Matt uses the balls of his feet instead of his heels. So, the next day at the range, I tried to use more ground force using the balls of my feet, my problem was, I kept hitting slices, or fairly big fades, when I usually hit it straight or a slight draw. I kept at it, and finally was able to get the ball to go straight, but it was a bit later on that I managed to hit a few draws, and this applies to all my clubs except wedges.
    The best result I had was with my 22* rescue, in my launch monitor, it showed my swing speed at 110 mph, and my not so well strike going 195 yards. Keep in mind, I'm 72, with a bad back, and I don't work out at all. The good news is, I'm now hitting all my clubs about 10 to 12 yards further than before, and spending less energy. So thanks to you and Matt for that. BTW, I have no doubt you will get to the 160 mph ball speed, good luck.

    Great video. I hurt my lower back a few months ago and have been seeing a physiotherapist for recovery. Havent been able to play golf. Started lifting weights and doing stretches and exercises at home that help with my golf swing and I'm back playing and I've gained alot of distance with less effort. Im 40 and I wish I did this earlier in my life.

    Your delivery sets you apart from others in my opinion, I am 52 and starting to get pain in shoulders and hamstrings and it is a constant journey to continue to improve or even stay at the same level. Love your work Mark, keep them coming, it’s getting me through lockdown here in Melbourne.

    It was not too long ago, when Justin Rose said, he has only lately understood the speed building ground up. As a mid single digit player, I find that really incredible taken, he’s a major winner.
    Weak leg action and mental image to just create a stance/foundation to swing the club ”on the legs” takes you only ”that far”.
    Getting the ball go further, you need to push hard up and around from the ground while maintaining your dynamic balance and proper body angles transfering the speed wave thru your joints and body parts into the releasing club head. Really often, the release is understood being a semi-active happening, but it is really passive and reacton to proper rythm and directions.

    I’m also trying to chase some speed gains. Best club head speed was 119.9 and best ball speed was 178.8... I’ve been trying to train for speed both in technique and the gym. Really been training vertical forces, rotational speed, and power in the Lats. Last year I was struggling to get over 110 for club speed (a lot of that due to getting fat and lazy). My goal is to get over 190 ball speed and 130 club head. I think it’s very doable for anyone. Just have to put in the work! I think there’s no substitute for speed and also no bigger advantage. Really loving this content Mark and the journey!

    You may not believe this as I find it hard to believe myself but at the age of 50+ in two separate tournaments I won the longest drive @342 and 347 with 6.5 Callaway. The prize in one tournament was a new expensive Niki Driver (back then 500+$) which I traded in for some new wedges: I never even hit the new driver..
    Today at 70+ I am still long against my piers but I am happy with a 250 to 280 in the fairway drive. The only reason I am posting this is about your age comment... Just wait you ain't seen nothing yet !

    It all comes down to motivation. For a PGA player, 15 extra yards might mean an extra $5million dollars. For you, it might mean Coach Lockey pays for the beers .

    Hi Mark, great video. Keep it going. Remember it's not just the gains it's the speed you are not losing with age etc. Look at any reviews of superspeed or driver distance gains nobody keeps it going on TH-cam beyond level 1. Please keep it going motivational for us over forties!!

    having tried this on the range during the week even lifting the left heel - 16 extra yards , will continue this - oh and im 54 yrs old and have started the same fitness as yrself - as and when during the day five mins here five mins here between coffee :)

    Good for you Mark - like you started a fitness regime in lockdown - hard to maintain the discipline but the proof is on the course as gaining 20 yards on drives and at least 1-2 clubs less on approaches - it does take time to learn the new patterns though - went through the back of greens 7 times last week!

    Closing in on the 50 barrier now. So I built my own swing speed trainer during lockdown driver has gone from 255 yards total to 280 yards controlled. My training is going to be more winter based as playing 3 rounds per week and my physical job keeps the level up.

    I am a very fit 62 yrs. of age. Always tried to just muscle through the swing. I have purposely tried just a little more body turn in my swing, and have effortlessly pick up 10 extra yards. I feel we all have more distance in us, it's a matter of trying something a little different, whether it be physical, technique, or both. As humans, we tend to resist change.

    Mark, great story on the changes to weight transfer from the base. My pro, has been coaching me on something similar, feel like my right bum cheek is like almost a squat, or feels like the same movement when passing a basketball to the side, and then straightening up on my left leg coming through. I haven’t fully realized a 10 or 15 yard gain, but I do feel a much better ball strike. Probably down to practice.

    Since January I started doing exercises first thing in the morning 5:30. 😢. My initial idea of starting this was to gain flexibility and generally not be so aching the morning after. But what I have found out is I have increased my swing speed & carry distance. Without the feeling I’m swinging any harder. So now am looking to fine tune my exercises to see where else I can gain.

    20 years ago, I used to swing my driver around 115-120 mph... now, I can barely get to 105, when I really swing hard at it. I would love to consistently be able to swing 110 mph... My goal would also be to consistently reach 160 mph ball speed. However, that's a loong way away!

    I like what you say about working hard to get where you want to be. Too much “dream big” in the world without mentioning how you have got to put in the hard work as well. Most things worth having require hard work to get. The more work you put in to something, the more you’ll appreciate it.

    My increase in speed has come from SS training and going to the gym and doing golf specific exercises for the core, chest, shoulders, back, legs and arms. I 'm 68 and just don't care to learn a new swing but, I'm like you and wish I was younger and had the time to do it. I do enjoy your videos. PS - doing pressups/pushups you need to go down till your chest just touches the ground for the full benefit. :)

    The video I’ve been waiting for! The one piece I think we all need as amateurs is what’s our base data before we embark on this journey ourselves, I’m trying to also get my speed up and I’ve noticed from whatever gains I’ve made I’m sending the ball further but have zero data to support, is there a market for ‘get your base data’ sessions? would you consider running one of those with me?     Really good video Mark and I get it. I’ve got 2 young girls and with school and clubs and work and life it’s hard but you’re right, it’s possible to fit it in if you really want to. To be honest, thanks to lockdown I’ve been doing Joe Wicks videos, started with his PE with Wicks but as the kids bailed out I kept going and it helped massively with my speed. The workouts are really leg and core orientated and it’s really helped off the tee without even realising.

    Love these videos Mark. Swing smarter, and get stronger. I have been deadlifting, squatting and power-cleaning throughout the lockdown and have added an easy 10 yards across the board. Explosiveness and power generation are learned by training your muscles and that is brought to the golf course. ntm the clubs feel lighter every day :)

    I have been thinking about how I use my feet quite a bit lately also trying to incorporate a little “sit” move into my swing at the start of my down swing to help me push into the ground.

    Love the force plate stuff. A little difficult to understand, perhaps a video explaining the 3 forces might be a good idea? Marcus Bell and Zen Golf uses a very similar concept amongst other ideas. Has totally changed how my swing feels.

      I'm glad I'm not the only one haha That footboard!!... so simple yet so effective. That, with loose arms (and trust) gained me over 5mph swing speed with driver overnight! Shows how bad my swing was in the first place! My Sunday best was around 244yrd carry... went up to 262 haha combine that with awareness of all the technical stuff Mark shares with us and a lot of practice, there's no doubt we can all improve massively. I'm in the same boat as Mark with practice time... I use to go to the gym regularly about 20yrs ago haha good luck with your game and keep improving 👍

    You could have increased your view count enormously if you had 2 extra words in the title, “300 yards”, but that’s not your style mate. The evolution of Parfield from 3yrs ago til today has been phenomenal. Your method is obviously working, you just need another 6 months of lockdown for the full transition to take effect.

    I’ve recently started with over speed training. I felt that I had more strength than speed. Especially in the legs. Last week we measured on a force plate and I was shocked. With a bit of practice I could pick up 5mph swing speed with an iron7 and 20 yards. That is massive. It’s not only the driver, it’s in all. Unfortunately I also injured myself the next day with fitness training. So be careful. It does strain the body.

    I can see the exercising, and the exercising to help swing speed, that's all good. My worry are the changes to your swing that seems to make you less accurate. For a young person, like the young Mark Crossfield, yes do it. There is lots of time to correct or grow with it. For me, hit more fairways, hit more greens and not worry about a large increase in distance, at the same time don't loose distance. Changes you make are perfectly good for someone of your athletic ability. For me it would be like shooting my foot.

    Hey Mark, I get that the whole golf world is obsessed with distance. Remember that a good chunk of your viewers are seniors. As such, what we have learned, having been on this planet at least 20+ more years than you, is you have to be honest with yourself as to what your body can do or not do. Arccos tells me that my average drive is 220 - and once I wrapped my head around that and acknowledged that time has taken it's pound of flesh from me in the form of back surgeries, knee surgery, and the inability to play and not have pain as one of my factors, equal to or greater than distance, wind, elevation etc. Last year the knowledge and acceptance of that 220 average, made it possible to reduce my handicap to almost scratch. Anytime I deviate, and forget the reality of being a broken 63 year old playing 100 - 140 rounds a year, balls start to go sideways, and pain starts to climb. So it is not all about distance - I just play the whites now - no need to play the blues anymore, and frankly do not miss them one bit.

    I also tried to add distance during lockdown. I have a decent swing, I’m 41 6 foot, can run 5km, but averaging 96 mph. I watched all the TH-cam videos and bought speed sticks, have been doing press-ups and lifting weights, buts zero gains. Then I took some lessons and finally understand where my power leakages are and now those videos on using the ground are working for me. Without the technique fixes, for me the fitness would be pointless. The combination of both, I think I can add 10 mph, maybe more.

    I can't use the ground on purpose, but at the bottom of my swing i stop my left arm and allow the left wrist to roll over, this makes me jump up and i've gained distance. I'm finally using my feet, I don't know why it works but it does.

    As someone who joined the gym for the first time at 31 years old at the start of this year my only regret is I didn't do it 10 years ago...
    Easier for me I don't have kids etc.. but if you can make the effort its certainly worth it. Wanna see you go full Bryson beast mode Mark!

    Good luck with it all Mark, I personally hate gyms and excise so I focus more on fairways as a social golfer plus we do drink a few beers during and after golf so distance is not really that important.. 😉🏌️‍♂️⛳️🍻

    Really enjoyed the video Mark - thanks! I’m obsessed with this aspect of my game at the moment too. I’m currently using Joey D’s golf fitness programmes from home. He’s the fitness coach for DJ and Brooks Koepka amongst others. As well as slam balls etc, there is extensive use of bands, Swiss balls and rotation work, so very golf specific and decent. It’s early days for me, but I can see this producing more distance for sure 💥🏌️‍♂️

    I'm in my 50's and shooting in the 70's from the senior tees. Driving the ball on average about 235 yards. If I found a way to drive the ball more like 250 yards, I would probably have to move to the white tees (men's normal), and I'm pretty sure I would then be shooting in the 80's or maybe even 90's. Not sure that is something I really want to attain.

    interesting video showing that increasing speed is possible but does bring other challenges with it.
    Also, I get that bulking up and becoming more muscular can help with club speed (as per Bryson) but how does Matt Lockey swing so fast and generate high ball speeds? I know he’s been working on fitness in general (running?) but considering he’s still quite a slender build he can swing the club very fast.

      He has a much stronger body than me. So for me to get to his speeds I need to get stronger. Also he uses long drive ideas in his golf swing but this also brings it’s complications as he then struggles to control face. 👍👍

    the big difference is that you have the skill to retain strike with more speed and different movements. As soon as I add speed strike goes out of the window and i lose distance aswell as accuracy.

    Is there a point where you would say time is better spent on technique and not speed? Or could we all do with more speed? I'm mid 150s to low 160s ball speed and have time to do speed training, but wonder if it would be a distraction from I'm proving technique 🤔

    For average golfers who maybe practice 1/2 times a week and play Comps at weekends, would you still recommend making changes now. My aim has always been becoming a better player, but I have limited time to practice and want to make sure practice is focused on my own goals.

      Depends on the player really. Some can make huge gains with simple swing fixes some might be consistent so speed might be where the gains lay.

      Mark Crossfield I would agree, I know from Shotscope data that the extra distance speed would allow, meaning shorter irons into greens leads to better scores. It’s getting the balance between training the body and then swing fixes to make sure it can be taken to the course. But that’s golf, all elements need practice to make serious gains.

    I think 160 ball speed is doable absolutely. I think it comes back to you making time to do it. Maybe 160 requires just a little bit more time everyday but you have to be willing to put the work in

    hi Mark - fascinating project you’ve embarked on given even more relevance by Brysons recent escapades. Will you be exploring any/all potential additional means of gaining the odd mph wherever you can?
    Thinking of weight gain/bulk to go with the physical training, different footwear, clubs, balls..... ? Also what’s the general feeling amongst the the other top 50 or pros at the moment - are any others following the yellow brick physical road & chasing the dream of 350 yards average drives?
    Interesting as ever to an average hacker

    I definitely think you have 160-165 ball speed potential - your biggest advantage is how grooved your pat-pat swing was, when your brain/body adapts to your more powerful move i'm sure you'll get back some of your old consistency but just at a higher swing speed. I think the real challenge is if you achieve your goal being happy to stay at that level instead of chasing speed further and maintaining the exercise to keep the change long term too. Good luck

    Speed training sticks do work and it’s very noticeable. An extra 15-20 yards is not hard. But you have to keep doing it to maintain that speed.

      It’s like the gym and staying strong. Your body doesn’t want to stay at the strength or speed . You have to keep doing it to stay that way. Like Going to the gym and gaining muscle and strength if you stop for 6 months you lose it all

    I think there has to be a trade off. At 6’4” I can swing plenty faster than when I play. As a mid handicap who started playing after giving up rugby I’m wondering if I should be trying to swing hard and train strike at somewhere near max or just get on a monitor and try to creep up the speed but maintain some control.
    Stats say most of my shortcomings are short game anyway...

      Andy M I’ve started to use the Fit for Golf app 14 weeks ago. When I went for my first lesson after starting (6 weeks in), club head speed was up 5mph average. Adjustable 30kg dumbbells and cheapest pull up bar from Argos. I already had (virtually unused 😬) resistance bands. Squats with weights, jumps, resistance band versions of med ball throws. I only ever went to a gym 4 or 5 times 30 yrs ago and then they went bust, never went back. I’m not a gym person but the work outs in the app last 40 - 50 mins. Like MC said, wished I’d started at 20. Unfortunately for me that’s a lifetime ago. Try the app, only 6 dollars 1st month then 12 dollars. You can cancel easily at any time. I used excuses not to try something for too long, but it’s easy to get a good programme these days 🙂 All the best with your golf 🏌️
