My personal anecdote about Holland & Holland: back in the 80's, my father was working overseas in Aberdeen when he was invited on a company shoot. Needing a set of guns, he rang up my more firearms knowledgeable uncle who recommended he try H&H. He visited their store in London and from his account, was treated absolutely amazingly. He was shown the whole process of making a gun for him and was even sized for one. It was then the salesman told him the price. He had a few choice words for my uncle the next time they talked. Fantastic company and even if you can't afford their products, they will treat you with respect and answer any questions you have.
Agree with you completely about quality of interior materials. To me a luxury car isn’t measured by the gadgets it has but by how opulent the materials are and how it feels to be inside.
Definitely true when you look at interiors such as Rolls-Royce. Not the newest tech, partly because the customers are so old they couldn't work it all out 🤷😂 but it's all about the relaxing, comfortable experience
To me it's both: you can't have the best possible luxury without modern supremely comfortable seats which are ventilated and have massage function (and not only on the seat back, but on the bottom part too). Those 'gadgets' make a real difference to driving comfort.
This is a Great and fantastic video displaying and highlighting the story about the Special Edition P38 Holland and Holland. I happen to own one here in the USA. I own # 148. I remember when this car was new and saw it up close. I fell in love with it immediately and vowed I’d own one at some point. Fast forward years later and I got an absolute mint example. Mine is in perfect condition, complete service history, and has all the possible accessories the car came with. Picnic tables, luggage bags, picnic kit, gun box in boot, floor mats, boot liners, window sticker and sales brochures ect. It is my pride and joy and very proud to own it. In summary, this car is an incredible example of a great partnership with Holland and Holland gunmakers and the Range Rover Vehicle. They just go well together and is a lovely collaboration. It took the standard car which is already the best, and made it even better and more exclusive. I’ve seen a lot of British cars and this one is the most posh and luxurious in my opinion. It Truly is a brilliant car, so unique, so British, so luxurious, so exciting. A go anywhere car, mixed with a beautiful work of bespoke craftsmanship that made it a Limited Edition. Thank you for this video and highlighting this car.
I was an 18year old engineer apprentice at Land rover in 2000 when the P38 was being sold. I remember the 4.6HSE being highest on the list of vehicles apprentices can drive needing to be the heady age of 24! Seemed an eternity away! But that leather smell was sumptuous!
I can only remember Jeremy Clarkson showing one of L322 Holland & Holland Range Rover on the TG studio around 2010 saying "and what goes well with drinks? guns!" 😆
It’s the other way around😅the car came with a drinks cabinet, and for the first year of ownership the people from Land Rover will come top up your drinks free of charge whenever you’ve emptied all of it
Because it is Land Rover, a collaboration with a gun manufacturer went unnoticed until you pointed it out 😁 I knew nothing about Holland and Holland until, after a mere 25 years leaving a couple of miles away from it, I stumbled across their shooting grounds in Northwood/Ruislip. I had a tour and a coffee. I spent so long in there that I was informed they were closing for the day and, when I got home, I realised that I’d left without paying! I left a message on their answer service and went back in the following day and paid only for the drinks on that occasion as they wouldn’t let me pay for my previous visit 😀 I also got a chance to reacquaint myself with ‘Gary’ the gun dog, a beautiful Beagle that was only happy when outside and covered in mud 😀 had a chat about him with his owner and left. Charming place and people. Have since returned with my mother too 😀 Oh yeah, back to the car.. another car/gun maker collaboration? Aston Martin ‘Shooting Brake’? 😇 great vid. Love the screens, I put an Xbox in the back of my E39 5 series in 2002 and kept the car until last year, by which time I had upgraded the front to an Android unit and the rear to a PS3 when the Xbox finally died. 😀
Another excellent video Jay. A good interior is so important. I remember when cooperating with Austin Rover in the early eighties my contact saying that the quality of the interiors was one of the reasons Honda worked with them on the Acclaim/Accord. The quality of our interiors should not be underestimated.
P38 is my favorite Range Rover, followed by the pre-facelift, BMW-powered L322. Love those too. But of all Range's, the P38 is the most dearest one to my heart. Maybe it was because it was the one brand-new during my childhood (even though I've only seen very few of 'em here), but...I just can't get enough of it.
Hi Jay this is my first time watching your channel and I wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video! I’m a P38 enthusiast and I daily my 01 HSE. It’s great to see someone singing the praises of the P38, they are criminally underrated. I’d love a Holland & Holland and I am constantly on the lookout for one. Great video 👍
I agree with you about the interior, I love the interior of my Chimaera, it wasn't assembled as well as many other cars, but for me it looks great and I love the simple layout with hidden window switches and other buttons, I also love the quirky door knob and the fact people never know how to open the doors ..
Absolutely spot on about interiors being under appreciated in the motoring press. It’s where you spend all your time and a special interior can be as much of an event as the driving itself, if not more!
I had a P38 Autobiograhy Model, which I bought in Dubai from a Sheikh, probably one of the best interiors of any Range Rovers including the very latest models, it was like a traveling Gentlemens Club! Incidentally, I worked part time for Land Rover as an instructor and at the launch of the P38 in Australasia, against orders and probably my better instincts, with a lot of Press gathered at the top of a steep hill waiting to snap this huge car cresting the hill.... I put my foot down and got the car airborne ! Somewhere there are pictures.
There was another car manufacturer that built "guns" and cars ......... Chrysler built M3 Grant tanks, used by the British to fight the Germans and Italians in North Africa
Love seeing a video on the P38. The best looking RR Version in my opinion. My father almost purchased an H&H edition about 12 years ago. I remember riding in it on a test drive. The Brown leather, wood door panels and trim, and Holland & Holland Badges. Such a special car. Subsequently, we also looked at a P38 Rhino Edition from the same owner. Both cars had very special interiors. Given the collectability of these now, both cars are on my list of "should-have & could-have" cars.
Great video and lovely version of the P38, I think given its age and swirls in the lacquer you’d see a cleaner and brighter colour from the paint with a machine polish, I’ve seen it with many older vehicles, the years of wear hide the rich colour underneath.
This made me chuckle. I have one of about 10 Rover 800 sterlings left on the road and it too has all the walnut trim and soft leather, fluffy carpets etc.
True words about interior quality rarely being a focal point in car reviews. It can be what makes a car special beyond its competitors. Quality of leather, wood, switchgear, etc. is only ever lightly touched upon. Knowing what goes in to crafting these items is far more impressive than just the result.
Always thought that the P38 was exactly what RR should've been for the time. Still chunky styling but more modern... but still analogue. Royal Enfield were smallarms manufacturers - I have a Bullet 500 in my living room - but, y'know, two wheels. As for interiors; you'd have to go a long way to find something more fascinating or outstanding than that offered by TVR. Tuscan and Chimera being particular favourites. Don't care if it was ergonomic or not - I could look at that styling all day...
Agreed, James. Manufacturers have never spent enough time and money on interiors. Fifty years ago I had one of the first Triumph Dolomites, my best friend had a BMW Tii. He was insistent that his BMW was the better car, but the driving experience of the Dolomite, for me, was far better - the BMW seemed more like a poor-quality Ford and didn't impress at all.
Agree totally about the comments on interiors being the most important part of a car. For me black leather every time. Ages better. Always looks classy. Hides dirt and wear much better than light colours. Would never have cloth, suede or cream leather again.
I do like the idea of a limited edition produced in conjunction with a shotgun manufacturer. Holland and Holland do make a quality product, it's what you get and use whilst you're on the waiting list for a Purdey.
As I inevitably age, interior quality and suspension refinement have taken priority over outright performance. I recently bought an L10 Lexus GS 450h with all the bells and whistles, including the premium semi aniline leather. Ivory leather with a matte walnut trim and a sunroof. It's my absolute favourite place to be, even nicer than my wife's E61 with tobacco nappa interior. The quality of the interior as a whole is impeccable, free of creaks and rattles. Even the sound system, something which normally doesn't matter all that much to me, is of such impressive clarity that it adds to the experience of the car. Of course it's still decently quick when you engage sport mode but I find myself just enjoying the journey in eco mode 99,9 percent of the time. It really feels like being in a luxury resort. I guess the quick summary is: I'm getting old.
This h&h is lovely, it's not a final edition. The P38 was finally canceled in 2002 and there is a 2002 rhino in purple and a 2002 Westminster in black over black with black trim and unique stitching, both are rare and uniquely trimmed, but do not include the h&h kit. Sadly none of the video and picnic tables are factory standard even if the factory installed them. More rare still, is the P38 based Bentley dominator made for the royal family is Brunei. On collab, Mercedes were manufactured by piano maker Steinway and sons. Rolls royce was made in Springfield Massachusetts, home of its namesake firearms maker. Ford had the Harley Davidson edition f150 truck.

I’d always spec the outside car colour so that tan or camel goes with it. Green being the obvious candidate, but also red. Other than that, other materials need to make comeback like corduroy interiors, or the mix of leather and a material. Teutonic black on black on black doesn’t do it for me.
Not a special edition, but I have owned my 1998 RR P38 Autobiography for 20 years, it has done everything from school run with the 4 kid and dog, to removal van, to pulling farm trailer or caravan….needs some tlc now, but I still love it, just the right size for UK country roads, my L322 is lovely, but feels just a little wider than I would like.❤
I did a lot of miles in well specced Rover 75s - because of the interiors. They were just lovely calm places to be with wood and leather - a thousand miles in a day was OK in car that just relaxed you. The exterior is for other people - the interior is for you!
Not a true collaboration with a car maker, but famously some Alfa Romeo 75s were raced in touring cars with a stunning Beretta main sponsorship black and silver livery.
Great story Jay. I had a 1972 Celica ST which was wonderful car. In total I've had in excess of 30 cars. I out on 70,000 km per year as an accident investigator.
I'm an Alpina B5 Touring driver. If I was getting it again (which I hope to) I'd certainly spend the many thousands to get Alpina to do one of its custom interiors. I would be buying expecting to keep for a very long time so given the lifetime costs the difference isn't massive. Interiors make a huge difference. Most car-grade leathers I wouldn't settle for in my home and I'd certainly not allow any shiny black plastic.
Me again banging on about Daimlers... best interior must be X308 Daimler Super V8. Autolux leather and superb walnut with laser-guided inlays. Stunning, and without equal
I don't know of another collaboration like this but Steyr-Daimler-Puch the car company, was a firarms manufacturer first and only started producing cars after the Treaty of Versailles sort of shut down their primary business. So thats sort of a firearms-car colab
Loved the video. Love a Rover P5B or old Rolls interior. Amazing quality and value. I daily a Range Rover and will probably see out retirement days in old Rollers with not an EV in sight. Ever...
On the subject of gun maker collaborations with car companies, the first thing that came to mind for me is Daewoo. I'm not sure if it'd count, since as far as I know they never made a gun themed car, but Daewoo was also South Korea's main small arms manufacturer and produced most of the firearms in use by the South Korean military today.
In Australia fabric is the way to go because leather is too hot and sweaty in summer. Trouble with fabric is it gets filthy easily. I like grey interiors because I have a black and white dog who drops hair everywhere and it's the least noticeable if it's grey.
Totally agree about the importance of a car's interior - its the view and experience of the car that you have all the time you're driving it - it might look amazing from the outside, but you don't see that from the driver's seat... For me this car is summed up by the shot of the interior door handle - bespoke quality metal handle, with an exposed screw head in the trim behind it.... Range Rovers are beautiful things, but for me, the P38....wasn't... My run-out was more mechanical - the mk1 Golf GTI, which got a 1.8 instead of 1.6 engine in a roller-skate :) (Was very black inside though)
The P38 is an amazing vehicle. The EAS was its downfall. The main issue with the system was a dealer trip requirement for a reset, down on bump stops. This one fatal flaw overshadowed a really nice truck. A lot of the best of the RRC with updated styling.
And in the boot under the carpet you get a single 12 bore over and under shotgun and skeet launcher to use once you get the picnic table set up! Great review had to laugh about the VHS Player 😂
Honestly, the best interior I’ve ever seen was the Jenson Interceptor S4. Which most people don’t know ever existed. It was minus the trademark goldfish bowl rear window. I sold one of the first to Saudi.
I guess one could kind of count all the "Overfinch" Range Rover models in collab with Holland&Holland (& some high end booze producers), as they were developed outside of Range's range. And if we count in the McLaren & Lockheed Martin Skunk Works partnership , we could like "kinda go there" as LMSW is a weapons development facility ... Strangely enough nothing out of 'Merica , which should be a given ... Nothing but Eddie Bauer , Harley Davidson & some '80s obscure Americon cognac brand ... weird
Not the link you were asking for, but a gun-maker made a car... Sort of. There were two bespoke "Ruger Sports Tourer" automobiles built in 1969 by the co-founder of Sturm, Ruger & Co. firearms.
My father had some special edition Mercedes SL300. I belive it was The last bach of manual SLs ever. It wos blue with The blue interijer and blue roof and crome wheals and interior trimm. I always liked how they managed to make exterier and interijer an exact same shade of blue
You asked so I'm going to suggest something Jay,,I love performance fiats. Will you please do a piece about the 131 mirafiora sport. I reckon you will have a very very hard time trying to find fiats answer for the RS 2000. But what great story this would be... Good luck. Ian. ✌️👍🇬🇧
My best car is a Land Rover Discovery 4 2012 HSE Luxury - old enough to be affordable but still quite update on power / equipment / looking ...especially brown one 🟤🟤
In 1985 you could buy the Chevy Outdoorsman package. A Chevy K10 pickup paired with a Winchester 94 lever action rifle and an in cab rear window gun rack. Life was better back then.
These days that would just be called a collab. Like many brand that collaborate with each other now. For better or worse that is. There for most would buy the standard version I presume unless you had to have it or for a collection. Almost certainly there will be one of these in a collection in Saudi. The Camel Trophy Land Rovers were iconic. 👍 Great video.
4:17 "And that's why the car was replaced so soon..." No. The P38 was an anachronism both from a mechanical and production point of view. And the only area in which it was quite modern was in its electronics - which in the real world were absolutely and unequivocally nothing but a disaster. That's why it was replaced so soon. I love the P38 and still own my 98 DSE. And I am grateful to it (and LR's piss-poor technical training and idiotic pricing policies) for starting me down the path of vehicle diagnostics which has culminated in my being involved in a thriving LR-diagnostics venture (GAP Diagnostic). But I am all for calling a spade exactly that. And the only reason the P38 lived to see the light of day at all is because the car it was replacing when BMW bought LR had been in production for nearly a quarter of a century and it was too late for BMW to make significant changes to the P38. From what I've read, BMW engineers were appalled at the state of the P38s development. If the P38 had become a terrific success from a technical standpoint as well as financially, BMW would have been silly to kill it off so quickly. It wasn't and neither was BMW. And that is why the L322 was introduced in 2002.
Another good collaboration between a carmaker and a gunmaker would be Toyota finally including a heavy machine gun in the standard spec for a HiLux. Lots of them have it added after-market.
Saw an overfinch range rover last year and thought "that seems like a blatant copy of a range rover." First I thought it was Ssyangong or some other new company i've never heard of. Then I found out that no, they're a specalist firm that modifies range Rovers, and yes, they do have a Holland & Holland range Rover. Looks quite nice. Should do with all the attention to detail put in.
I think this was an inspired association between Range Rover and Holland & Holland, the sort of exclusivity that is difficult to obtain for even reasonably well-off people; so much so, that you can obtain a new Holland & Holland Range Rover from around £140,000.
Kalashnikov Autos. Built one car costing in excess of $350,000 I believe they sold none but I could be wrong there, as no one would actually put their hands up to admit owing one. Good video as always.
There is a pickup (Mitsubishi or Toyota or Nissan), that has an 'Edition', named after a gun manufaturer. I've seen quite a few of them around, but can't recall the name.
In the 1980’s, Chevrolet brought out a new coupe and gave it the name “Beretta”, apparently without seeking the permission of the Italian firearms manufacturer. There was a settlement which allegedly resulted in General Motors donating $500,000 to foundation for cancer research.
Serbian Zastava was also a car maker. They did a range of Fiat cars under licence (750, 128...), and the infamous Yugo. All along they were the main arms manufacturer in the country. And they still are. So, there you have a good combo of clunky cars with durable assault rifles 😂
My personal anecdote about Holland & Holland: back in the 80's, my father was working overseas in Aberdeen when he was invited on a company shoot. My question is, what is the price?😅
If you've got to ask the price then you probably can't afford it

Not a special edition, but I have owned my 1998 RR P38 Autobiography for 20 years, it has done everything from school run with the 4 kid and dog, to removal van, to pulling farm trailer or caravan….needs some tlc now, but I still love it, just the right size for UK country roads, my L322 is lovely, but feels just a little wider than I would like.❤
I do believe you are gradually becoming a RR fan boy James well done 😅😂👍❤️
I saw a Jaguar XJ ultimate edition on Autotrader not long ago, this immediately gave me the fizz and I've been pining for an XJ ever since
I remember wanting one of these when they came out. There should be a gun cabinet in the back too. Very classy.
I did a lot of miles in well specced Rover 75s - because of the interiors. They were just lovely calm places to be with wood and leather - a thousand miles in a day was OK in car that just relaxed you. The exterior is for other people - the interior is for you!
Alvis. A car, a gun. Very integrated!
Brilliant point, Jay, about the Brits’ edge being your interiors!
Love to see this kind of videos, really enjoy this old forgotten cars
I don't know of another collaboration like this but Steyr-Daimler-Puch the car company, was a firarms manufacturer first and only started producing cars after the Treaty of Versailles sort of shut down their primary business.
So thats sort of a firearms-car colab
Loved the video. Love a Rover P5B or old Rolls interior. Amazing quality and value. I daily a Range Rover and will probably see out retirement days in old Rollers with not an EV in sight. Ever...
Thanks J, good to see an upmarket old school Range Rover. 🙏🙏
Love the P38, this example is beautiful. Favourite special edition car? The Lotus Carlton or Corrado VR6 Storm.
My run-out was more mechanical - the mk1 Golf GTI, which got a 1.8 instead of 1.6 engine in a roller-skate :)
(Was very black inside though)
So nice. Remind me the 50th anniverary my father had.
The Aston Martin DB7 - Dunhill is nice too.
I always like triumph interiors. To me they were classy and understated.
Good luck. Ian. ✌️👍🇬🇧
My favourite channel and High peak Autos excellent watch every time .
Really amazing to see that ancient buick V8 still being used😂
My best car is a Land Rover Discovery 4 2012 HSE Luxury - old enough to be affordable but still quite update on power / equipment / looking ...especially brown one 🟤🟤
In 1985 you could buy the Chevy Outdoorsman package. A Chevy K10 pickup paired with a Winchester 94 lever action rifle and an in cab rear window gun rack. Life was better back then.
Oh, just realised it was the Linley that had the £45k premium vs. £8k for the H&H. Fair enough + I need to pay closer attention!!
There was the FSO Kalashnikov if I remember correctly...
The interior is top priority, perhaps only second to it being quiet and smooth. You don't ride along strapped to the outside of the car.
Been seeing the new rangy on the roads and thought, wow, that's nice.
Then I saw a P38 and thought, wow! That's really nice! 😂
Great car
Best looking Range imo. Great shape overall
Those brown seat are worth the premium alone.
4:17 "And that's why the car was replaced so soon..."
No.
A Jag with cream leather and wood is gorgeous.
Whats Jeremys one in green with the drinks cabinet?
Love the term “runout special”. Very British with hint of derogation.
11:50 Did that tractor take out one of your cameras?
No but it flung mud at it and the car
Not fun I bet, but at least it survived. Anyway, loved the video, good sir. I always enjoy learning about cars from you.
There is one in Bergen Noord Holland. Very cool.
Mitsubishi Colt? 🤗🤪
What a magnificent motor, guv.
Overfinch were one of the popular luxury modifiers of Range Rovers, quite popular amongst footballers and musicians
Great video as usual; I myself own a special, limited run model myself: the Chequered Flag F-Type
I think this was an inspired association between Range Rover and Holland & Holland, the sort of exclusivity that is difficult to obtain for even reasonably well-off people; so much so, that you can obtain a new Holland & Holland Range Rover from around £140,000.
Great video, just subscribed.
It’s not limited enough but have always loved alpinas
Kalashnikov Autos. Built one car costing in excess of $350,000 I believe they sold none but I could be wrong there, as no one would actually put their hands up to admit owing one. Good video as always.
Great video! I now want one.
The Interior Is Where Owners Spend Their Time!!!!!
A Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 2 interior is hard to beat !
I remember this car looking a lot greener. It looks blue here
Jeep Cherokee Orvis - as described by Pistonheads: "American purveyor of sporting gear and apparel for people who liked to go out and kill stuff"
There is a pickup (Mitsubishi or Toyota or Nissan), that has an 'Edition', named after a gun manufaturer.
I've seen quite a few of them around, but can't recall the name.
Callaway P38 is an interesting one also.
i have a 96 p38 dse manual with 340000km (more then 200000ml) and is my daily car, i just love my big tank...👌
I don't know about collaborations, but I know 80's Renault F1 turbo cars were grenades!
In the 1980’s, Chevrolet brought out a new coupe and gave it the name “Beretta”, apparently without seeking the permission of the Italian firearms manufacturer. There was a settlement which allegedly resulted in General Motors donating $500,000 to foundation for cancer research.
Please tell me there's a limotrd edition Lada Kalashnikov. Or an FSO polonez Dragunov.
Serbian Zastava was also a car maker. They did a range of Fiat cars under licence (750, 128...), and the infamous Yugo.
All along they were the main arms manufacturer in the country. And they still are.
So, there you have a good combo of clunky cars with durable assault rifles 😂
