Success! I have a Kohler toilet, purchased the universal kit and followed the instructions to the letter. It all worked as described. I got my universal kit from Lowe's and followed along with you and had my Koehler totally redone in less than 90 minutes. Great teaching video! Thank you!
My instruction manual was missing everything after page 10 in English and Spanish (I got two sets of those pages in one half-stapled booklet), and your video saved me. The Fluidmaster video also didn't tell me to not use the rubber washers on the tank-to-bowl attachment, and you did. Great video. Thanks so much!
This is one of the best investments you can make if you are a fix-it type person. This kit not only gives you ALL the parts that go bad, but gives you 2 tools that really speed up the process. For those of you with an "evil" Kohler toilet with the three-eared lower seal, this set also gives you the special tool to remove and install the large retaining nut on the bottom of the fill tank. Using these parts and that tool was hugely easier and faster than the first time I tried to fix a Kohler. Wow, what a bad experience that was. Anyway - highly recommended !! I will also offer my own special trick- actually not a trick at all. When replacing the tank on any 2-piece toilet I have found that if the seal is dry it might not move around to the correct location to make a seal, so I put a little liquid soap on it so it slides around a bit and finds it's happy place and makes a good seal.
@@PostUp_Time I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT. Haha. Real reply: No, the liquid soap doesn't interfere with the function of the seal. It simply helps it to form to any minute irregularities of the ceramic rim.
My only question is the 3way gasket is much taller than the bottom of my kohler inside the tank raising the screw bolts high. Should I trim the top of the gasket bolt sleeves?? @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
Great explanation video, I would like to mention that when buying a modern Kohler toilet you want to get a fluidmaster or korky flush valve only kit and swap out the flush valve before installation, Kohler’s own flush valve called the Aquapiston is very dysfunctional and will give you very bad performance if it’s not replaced before installation
I wish I had found this video before I replaced my fill valve. After replacing it, the gasket started to leak. I could've saved money if I had this kit. Great instructions and great tips. Thank you for the video.
I had the same question. After scratching my head a long time, I reviewed the Fluidmaster package. On my package there is a picture diagram on the front of the package. It shows 3 scenarios- Kohler, Gerber, & Universal. In the video, he is fixing a Kohler commode. If you look at the diagram on the package, it shows NO red fat gasket is used for the Kohler models. Assemble as he does in the video without it - if you are fixing a Kohler.
This guy is a natural teacher! I just learned what is wrong with my repair...the friction washer wasn't in the repair kit. The friction washer is hard to find!
Hand down the best most helpful instructional video for this task I found online. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to create and post this. I was able to fix my toilet thanks to you.
Really helpful video! The step by step instruction is great! I'd make a suggestion to splurge for the Kohler brand gasket & bolts to go along with the universal kit. You get some duplicate parts, but the Kohler bolts have nice plastic handles that make them easier to hold when tightening down the nuts.
wow! I looked at others on the net, and yours was fabulous in comparison. You walked through each step and explained. One question I have, or is it just a statement that my logic is correct. I have three holes but those rubber thingies on the gasket wouldn't push into the hole. The rubber plug thingies that the 3 bolts to through... waaaaaaaaay to big. Since the ones that I pulled out had the washers within the bowl, I used that way. Also, I compared the BIG black vs. red gasket thingy at the bottom... and since was comparative to the black one, I used that one and cut of the 3 plug thingies attached to it as it has worked for over 25 years that way without the 3 black plugs! What a WONDERFUL kit with those WONDERFUL tools! Thanks. I purchased the everything kit yesterday at Home Depot for $19.98 (October 2021)

I wish I had found this video before I started, Even though it didn't have the washers on the bolts the instructions said put them on so I did, It leaked a little till I got the bolts tighten down a little more. I think it's fixed now. My flapper assembly was bad. the tank wouldn't hold water it was just leaking passed the assembly is why I replaced it.

I'm just trying to rebuild my Kohler toilet right now. I was very thrilled to find out that the universal flush handle that's supposed to fit ALL toilets (including Kohler), is way too big to fit through the hole in the tank. This is the only stinking tank I've ever seen with a handle hole this small!🤬🤬🤬
I have a Kohler toilet and I'm trying to put the tank to bowl but there are no holes inside the tank for the bolts. How am I supposed to attach the tank to the bowl if there's no holes for the bolts to go through from the tank to the bowl. There was a toilet tank plate on it but it's for two bolts and the ball is for three bolts, so I'm wondering if this tank and bowl cannot go together and how I ended up with both of them as one single toilet. Please help me.
There is water leaking where the bolts come thru to connect to the Bowl...would tightening the LARGE nut that holds the flush valve in place. fix that?
So my gasket plugs are way too large for the holes. This is the second kit I’ve gone to get in attempt to fix my toilet. I have the worst luck with home repairs.
Thank you very much for this video! I have the kit and watched the video many times. I am just wondering about the black rubber gasket. After I inserted the bolts that go through the holes, they stayed raised up inside the tank and below the rubber is not flush. Is that correct? Or what am I doing wrong? Thank you so much.
My house was built in 1915. I have lived in the house for 42 years since 1979. The Basement bathroom has about a two-inch raised concrete floor. The basement toilet would normally sit on top of the concrete floor bolted to the flange, but this toilet actually sits in the concrete floor. So the concrete surrounds the bottom of the toilet holding it in place. I rather not attempt to remove the toilet that is cemented in place as I would be opening a can of worms. The tank works (it has 3 holes just like in the video but I have no idea of the model. The lid which is not the right lid is cracked but epoxied so it stays together but it is not a great fit. I was thinking of replacing the tank and lid but as I said I have no idea of the brand. I tried to measure the distances between the three holes. I did not get an exact measurement but they form a triangle with a measurement of approx 4 inches, 4 inches, and 5 inches. That is approximate, I do not know if all three hole tanks have the same dimensions? Is there any way to find a matching white porcelain tank and a tank top that would work with a very old toilet? The old tank holds a lot of water. Do you think I could use the same kit you used? The bolts from the tank to the toilet are quite rusted and don't know if it is worth attempting to remove them. As I write this I think the best thing to do is to just leave the old tank, since it works, change the flapper when needed, at least I would still have a working basement toilet. I just thought that changing the tank and lid would look more attractive., but it might not be worth all the headaches and work. Just wanted to get your opinion. Thanks
Hi, there have been so many changes to toilets because of water restrictions over the years, I think you would have a hard time finding a match for the tank. There aren't many models I've seen with the 3 bolts like this, so it may line up. I think if you prep the tank and use an appliance spray paint, you could get an updated look.
I have never seen a toilet cemented to the floor, Perhaps you are mistaken in saying that. I would love to see a picture. I highly doubt that someone would cement a toilet in like that. But I have seen worse. I'm just hoping that for your sake that's not the case.
That being said, of its got 3 holes, it's more than likely a kohler, or something that Kohler parts would fit American toilets are usually all universal.
@@alexleanh I see the seal in your parts laid out. My bad. I have a couple tips for setting the water closet a lil easier. 1. The bolts that connect to the closet flange get 2 extra nuts and washers and secure the bolts to the flange and that will keep them from moving on ya also don’t install the tank to the bowl until you have already installed the bowl. Those older water closets are very heavy and in balanced. Also be careful when you tighten the tank bolts it will crack either the tank or bowl. Hope this helps

Better to just change your toilet at this point. Slowly they're going away from this style of toilet and very difficult for replacing the gasket. Modern toilets will have only 2 bolts on each side if it's a 2 piece toilet
the original way kolhers tank to bowl is a piss poor way to engineer a toilet...the guy that thought this up does'nt have to work on them...I completely change the gasket when I have to work on one...much easier and cheaper...

Better to just change your toilet at this point. Slowly they're going away from this style of toilet and very difficult for replacing the gasket.
Modern toilets will have only 2 bolts on each side if it's a 2 piece toilet
Oo
Wouldn't be better if the inside of the tank was cleaned before the new parts were installed. Just the perfectionist in me Sorry.
the original way kolhers tank to bowl is a piss poor way to engineer a toilet...the guy that thought this up does'nt have to work on them...I completely change the gasket when I have to work on one...much easier and cheaper...
Green TOOL !!!!
THATS NO HELP TO ME.
What's a Green tool
I also gave up trying to fix my 4 Kohler toilets and I bought 4 new toilets 🚻 and I installed them I will never buy or try to fix Kohler toilets anymore
Very helpful, thanks!
