- New language video. This time , we'll see if Chavacano speakers can understand Spanish. I invited Oscar “Pogi” from Mexico to interview some locals in Zamboanga city to see if they can understand each other.

I live in Los Angeles 🇺🇸 and I grew up knowing Filipinos, and I also work with a lot of Filipinos and I notice a lot of similarities between Mexicans and Filipinos. It seems Mexicans have more in common with Filipinos than other Latin Americans. Mexico and Philippines were the main colonies of the Spanish empire. It’s a shame that Mexicans and Filipinos don’t know that we are cousins. When I went to visit Cebu City in April of 2019 it reminded me of Mexico. I pretty much felt at home. Maybe one day Mexicans and Filipinos can get closer to one another.
Philippines was ruled by spanish in mexico.there is even 1 word that entered chavacano vocabulary that is not spanish but of mexican native language. Zacate=grass. That chavacano use.

Yes chabacano and spanish are almost the same, except chabacano doesn't have tenses in their language unlike spanish.
I remembered when i was in college and we had a spanish subject and our teacher learned her spanish in spain, with my naughtiness, i tried talking to her in chabacano and she was surprised that i can speak spanish lol, we got very closed and even exempted me on final exam 😂
Chavacano does have tenses, by using a preverb that shows tenses.

I'm jealous. If I was born with a Chavakano mother tongue, I wouldn't have so much struggles learning Spanish.

Español (Castillano o Asturias), runs in our bloods..., That's why its just that easy for us to speak Spanish especially in the provinces here in the Visayas(particularly Panay, Negros, Cebu, Leyte and Samar.)

im 22 and one of the few filipino millenials who still speaks spanish from my grandparents. much now especially when i moved to california where majority are hispanics.

In the same boat as you! It's surprisingly not that difficult to find Filipino Spanish speakers over here in the U.S. especially in major cities where you're bound to interact and do business with Latinos.
It's a sharp contrast to the number of native and L2 Spanish speakers on the islands who are still a minority (my paternal grandparents included). I only hope for more Filipinos to wake up and accept our unique Asian Hispanic roots and take some cues from our Latino cousins across the Pacific that Spanish can be a language of uniting people instead of taking in the outdated notion that it was just a language for the privileged.

I am 21 and luckily grew up with the language, it never died within our family. My grandma still speaks it though my parents and her siblings are more accustomed to Tagalog now but we can all speak and understand Spanish. I think its important to maintain this rich identity we have and that is our undeniable Hispanic roots. If only all Spanish speakers here can converge maybe we can help in preserving and even more promoting the language.

Sure, you are right. Speaking spanish allow you to understand and communicate with more than 500,000,000 people in more than 20 countries. It would be a big advantage for the Philippines, for development. And this is not so difficult for filipinos, since there are many cultural affinities and many spanish words in native languages.
during 1900 60% of filipino speak spanish . but during the american occupation american remove the spanish language as second language and replace it by native philipino language and english only .

@Dean Amil try pure ifugao language or other language in the mountain areas. I'm pretty sure that they conserve their language better than their lowland counterparts.

i have a Chavacano friend in our church and I spoke to him in Spanish and we understand eachother.

Isidoro Montes de Oca (1789-1847) was a Mexican of Spanish Filipino descent who was a revolutionary general who fought in the Mexican War of Independence between 1810 and 1821. He was among the commanders of the army of Vicente Guerrero and José María Morelos. And was a trusted man of Vicente Guerrero and was his sub-General.
during the mexican war of independence many fillpinos who are soldiers and mestizos and those that were exiled from the phillipines joined the mexicans against spain ..... we should really respect one another !

The Philippines was ruled by Spain via Mexico and manifested itself through the Galleon Trade. The principal Galleons on the Manila Acapulco Galleon Trade route were built in Cebu and in Manila. Soldiers from Mexico were sent to the Philippines and here they established themselves in the province of Pampanga in towns like Mexico and Guagua. Filipino mariners who manned the Galleons sometimes stayed in the Americas and established themselves in places like Louisiana and California. They were known as Manila Men. The Galleon Trade was two fold. It brought Chico and Avocado to the Philippines while the Mango was brought to Mexico and up to now is called Mango Manila, which is sweeter than the other varieties. There are many similarities specially in architecture. Going to some neighborhoods in Mexico City remind me of Malate in the 1970’s. Some think the Galleon Trade was one way. It was actually both ways. The reason being, when the Pope divided the world between Portugal and Spain, Spanish were not allowed to use the African route and indian ocean to go to the Philippines. This was part of Portuguese territory! Hence they had to go to the Atlantic route to Mexico then onwards to the Philippines. The similarities are profound...customs, culture, habits, dress simply because of 400 years of Spanish influence. The Philippine Centennial Celebrations in 1998 relived and revived these connections with then Philippine President Fidel V Ramos gifting the Mexican President a box of rare coins used in the Philippines during the colonial period, but minted in Mexico! Viva Relaccion de Mexico y Repuplica Filipina! Salud y Mabuhay!

I condiser Philipines part Latinos, they have so many similarities. Last names, some words when they talk, religion and stuff. Crazy that the Spaniards united so many people. (For good or bad).

Dumbest idea. Spanish language should be taught in private schools not public schools. On the other hand, Baybayin should be the main educational language to be taught in all areas of education in the Philippines. Spanish is a foreign language, it doesn't revive the original language of the Philippines.
@@gearzone2611 tbf, languages are taught in how useful they are. Baybayin being the second language wouldn't grant the same use as Spanish so it's not completely dumb. Baybayin is beautiful and I'm trying to learn it, but it's simply dying out :/

Both Spanish and Arabic are protected auxilliary languages in the Philippines. These are internatonal languages along with English where Baybayin will never be in that status, ever.

Hola! I studied in ADZU and WMSU in college and not a native chavacano speaker. I learned to speak the dialect during those days . Now, I am studying Spanish and one pf the reasons why i became so much interested to pursue studying Spanish is the fact that most of the words spoken in Chavacano are indeed Spanish. A native Chavano speaker should be able to understand Spanish . Congrats Ian! You did a great job! He's my classmate before in Mass Communication :)

Hola Anna, otra vez.( hello Anna, once again) me encanta este video(love this video).....and I'm out of my 5 minutes of written/oral Spanish.....This is a very captivating street view of Chavacano and Mexican Spanish. This Spanish dialect is 70% European. The 30% is indigenous Mexican. (Nahuatl?) Similar to Chavacano in development. The difference is in the matrices. Chavacano is Astronesian and eventually evolved into a new language and acquired a new name. The other matrix is European Spanish matrix. It only became a dialect not a separate language and kept the name Spanish. Oscar also speaks English. SWEET!!!! English, Taglish added to the mix. And TRADE is where languages mix peacefully and give birth to other languages. Fantastico!!!. I will be watching and listening intently to the language interactions again and again. I thought chavacano de Cavite is extinct due to majority Tagalog language in the area
solo me ha costado menos de un año aprendiendo español. Chavacano es indiscutiblemente un precioso tesoro incomparable a los otros idiomas Filipinos que hay aunque su recursos culturales no son tan rico como de los de mas, su potencial, una vez que se realiza, les llevara su hablantes a experimentar un tipo de prosperidad que nunca han pensado ser posible. Pero eso solo sera posible si se puede sobrevivir ante de las amenazas que lo enfrentan a Chavacano como el peligro de ser borrado por Bisaya, Tausug y Tagalog. Tenemos que ser muy fuertes y firmes para que podremos mantenerlo como es y tal vez enriquecer la cultura que hay en torno del idioma. Mas salidas, mas canciones, ezfuersar y realizar las policias que ya existen con el fin de preservarlo. No hay otro manera. Si tuvieramos que declarar el ciudad de Zamboanga como un zona exclusiva para los chavacnohablantes, pues, vamos a hacerlo.
Roy : Tienes toda la razón, el idioma Chavacano es parte de la riqueza cultural de Filipinas, debe ser conservado y protegido. También se habla en una zona de Malasia. Además, quienes hablan Chavacano pueden aprender Español muy fácilmente, lo que les permite comunicarse con más de 550,000,000 de personas en más de 20 países.

This is amazing. I am from the Visayas region and know nothing about chavacano and espanyol. If they speak slowly I can understand the gist of their conversation, hearing familiar words like "nombre" "habla" "claro" "intiendes" "cerveza(beer?)" "cerveza negra(rhum, whisky?)" "ciento por siento espanyol" and other small hints. Hehe. The human family is really amazing, this inspired me to learn Español and hopefully Mandarin too.

Try to live in zamboanga for at least a year, by that time you will learned how to speak and understand chabacano, you learned japanese without being born in Japan 😊.

I always think that Spanish, English, and Tagalog should be the national languages of the Philippines. They should be used nationally and equally on all government agencies and publications, and education. Regional languages should not be overlooked too. Regional languages should strengthen their use in their respective regions where they are spoken. These regional languages should use their languages in their signages, regional/provincial documents, and etc, along with the three national languages.
I wish they never removed Spanish. It would be cool to be able to read Spanish books

There are still Chavacanos speaker in Cavite City and Ternate Cavite, i mean aside from Zamboanga.

Seriously, give yourself some RESPECT. Stop being so Ashamed of your Culture. Be happy being a Luzoner or Cavitano! You are Tagalog! No need to try very hard to beg for the world to see differently. Why are you so ashamed of your reality? Let Zamboanga have their Moment. You make it cheap, when everyone else in Luzon is claiming to be Latino.
In my hometown, the old folks speak English and Spanish fluently. My late grandfather can speak it more fluently especially when he's totally drunk. I often hear him shout Spanish and English to his drinking spree comrades and they would chorus and exchange with much gusto and fun to each other. As a child who never got to understand what they're saying just giggle at them.😂

I GREW UP IN ZAMBOANGA FOR 2 YEARS WHEN I WAS 4-6 YEARS OLD AND I LEARNED MANY CHAVACANO WORDS, IT'S JUST SAD BECAUSE I ALREADY FORGET THEM
The Filipino and Mexican connection is one of the many inspirations behind this book I’m writing called “The Road Ranger.”
While much of the story has a lot of mature themes like murder, betrayal, violence, and vengeance, the main characters Matt Santos and Maria Garcia embody an underlying theme of Filipinos and Mexicans being primos en cultura.
Matt Santos (the protagonist) is ethnically Filipino and Maria Garcia (the deuteragonist/secondary main character) is Mexican. However both live in Calivada which is an amalgamation of California and Nevada in a post-apocalyptic United States. There are some Spanish spoken by both characters in some parts in the story. But the underlying theme between the two is Filipinos and Mexicans are historical brothers-in-arms. Look no further than 201st Aztec Eagles of the Mexican Air Force who were deployed to the Philippines back in World War 2 to assist the Filipinos and Americans against the Imperial Japanese military.
Edit: I’m actually learning Spanish myself due to the effort in restoring Spanish to co-official level in the Philippines where my parents and wife hail from. And going back to my storybook, there is a subtle sort of romance going on between them though there are no kissing or sex between the two characters that “solidify” their underlying love for one another. However this will eventually evolve in future stories.

I have always wanted to learn how to speak and understand spanish language since it was already abolished in our curriculum back then. I know a little and to sound nearly spanish is not difficult to learn since our accent is almost the same as the spanish speaking people. That is why most of our population except for those who really speak English in a neutral accent, have in common with latin and .Spanish people in terms of accent or perhaps enunciating an English word. That's what we used to call it regional accent and even Americans have different regional accents so as Filipinos.

Que onda carnal? Me gusta mucho el lenguaje español. Mi abuelos hablaban el lenguaje pero mi generacion ya no. Ahora hablamos nada mas palabras pero no podemos conversar con fluidez. y quiero decirles que el idioma más hablado en más países del mundo es el español se habla inglés como idioma universal por lo sencillo y porque lo han impuesto los Estados Unidos
Pero en el futuro el idioma predominante será el español México es una potencia que está en desarrollo según los expertos calculan que México el cabo el 2040 2050 si a una potencia igual o más grande que Estados Unidos
si no me creen lo que les estoy diciendo investiguen porque en la actualidad en China en las escuelas ya impusieron el idioma español y en muchos países se está promoviendo el idioma español les voy a decir porque porque hay más países con los cuales puedes hacer comercio de habla hispana que con cualquier otro país y otro idioma

I have friends with second name is Urdaneta. The culture is very seemed to Spain and Portugal. They eat lechon like we do here in Portugal and Spain. They know what is paella valenciana.
I was shocked at the end why there's Salida Departure. I was like, there's a movie house there? I learned salida in a different context which is movie. lol. I didn't know how it came to that point. haha.
Salida is indeed, "departure", it has the same meaning in spanish and chavacano.
I was born in Zamboanga and grew up there until 3 b4 we moved here in Manila. My spanish/chavacano is limited only haha.

Am Cebuano...I only learn a little Spanish from grandparents when I was elementary...when i got to college we had Spanish classes for 2 semester....but still I only understand españoles.... not that fluent...as much....😔I find it hard sometimes cuz there's a lot memorizing of words ,phonics and sustantivos...
