Looking for an in-depth and focused video on still life photography, and this is exactly what I needed! Just goes to show that it's valuable to return to the principles of fine art. Now I can apply this to create still life product photography, using the thought process of forming a compelling still life composition. Thank you!
You have really spoken my mind, .... still life is a creation, it is different from photographing an existing beautiful scenery, interior, ..... no bad meaning to other types of photography/photographers, all master pieces regardless types must possess great aesthetic and skills, I was just thinking about the difference among different types of photography

Hi Steve..wonderful, enlightening lessons most inspiring thx! I am desperately wanting to start specialising in architectural work but only have an Olympus O MD -EM MARK 2 CAMERA AND 12-40 2.8MM LENS. Thinking I should sell it and get a canon DSLR OR NIKON which are very inexpensive and have more suitable tilt-shift lenses. Being broke doesn’t help ! But I need to start something for my own sanity…still life also in mind. I have no post production experience not the money to have to spend all my time and money on upgrading my ipad 12.9” screen …any suggestions would be most appreciated
Hi, Fernand. If you are just starting out, I would recommend holding off on buying equipment until you fully understand what you actually need for architectural photography, for both interiors and exteriors. Your camera has a 16mp sensor. You won’t see that much difference until you use a camera with >32mp. If you shoot carefully, with small apertures and low ISO, with a cable release to avoid blurring, and on a rock-steady tripod, you should produce adequately sharp images. Remember, too, that for online use, emails, etc you will be reducing your higher-res TIFFS to 3-5 MB JPEGS. If there is a downside to that camera, it’s the 2.0 crop factor. That makes your 12-40mm lens the equivalent of a 24-80, which is totally useful for basic architectural photography. Ultimately, purchasing a Canon (or Nikon) that accepts their 24mm TS lens would be ideal. For now, go in the field and practice using the equipment that you have. Fine tuning your compositional skills is the most important first step. Keep in mind that without a TS lens, you will always have to rectify verticals in photoshop. Knowing that, plan ahead and include more material on the sides that you will eventually lose when you align the verticals. If you have to tip your camera up to get the top of a building, try to at least keep the horizontals parallel to the picture plane to avoid yet another level of distortion. Start to build a portfolio. I have a video suggesting ways to efficiently do just that. When you have a good portfolio, you can begin to confidently solicit clients. Only then, after you have practiced enough in the field to know the limitations of your current equipment, should you consider purchasing new gear.

If you have access to issues from 1986-2006, you’ll see truly excellent photography, fully grounded in the principles of composition that I’m presenting in these videos. Keep in mind, that this arduous work was almost all done with large-format view cameras, making the level of accomplishment that much more admirable. I hesitate to name names, for fear of leaving out photographers whom I admire, but the photographs of my friends Durston Saylor and Mary Nichols are truly remarkable in their style, discipline, and unfailing consistency through the years.
