Wow, I think that's the most "mature" collection of work I've seen in one of your mail-in-videos, none of them would feel out of place in the well sorted photgraphy section of a library... Keep up these videos, love them for inspiration and motivation!

Thanks, Ted! Last year I printed a book with Blurb. The 1st copy looked great so I ordered more. The new batch was messed up with ghosted images like the black hadn't printed or hadn't printed fully. Blurb reprinted them for no charge, but the 3rd batch wasn't great either. The quality was halfway between the wonderful 1st and the terrible 2nd. At that point I got demoralized/distracted and forgot about the book project. Seeing the beautiful work you've shown today, I'm re-energized to get a book printed well. IDK if that will be sorting out the quality issues with Blurb or finding a better printer, but I'm inspired and excited to get on with it. Thank you, Ted!

This collection of bookes and zines is outstanding and when I see the pictures from the former Soviet Union it is like a trip in my past when I visited Eastern Europe in the 80s! Great work and that is true for the three zines and the Ryans Book, too. And there is nothing to add to your advice to Ryan, it is the beginning of a mental road trip. I visited the Peter Lindbergh exhibition in Brussels a few weeks ago. I saw "Untold Stories" in 2020 and I witnessed how much the things I have encountered in photography in the years between have changed me and my attitude. I am so grateful what photography teaches me and seeing the same spirit in books and zines is my main motivation in collecting them. Therefore thank you very much again for presenting us these inspiring pieces of art.

Ryan's taken more great photos in one year than I have in nearly 20! The more I watch this channel, the more I think I should sell my gear and just buy photo books to enjoy other people's great work!

The first book you discussed, the documentary photography book is a gem... and a portraits a good idea to why we take photographs... and putting the gems together with a story.

Relating strongly to Ryan’s letter and your advice to him. Like Ryan, I’ve just completed my first year of taking photography seriously, and found myself nodding throughout his letter and throughout your advice. Thanks to both of you for the confirmations, motivations and directions!

Really like watching these videos of the zines. It’s always good to see others work and how they express themselves through that work. Probably what I like most of your videos doing this, is that even when you critique you see behind the “flaws”. You see the meaning of the intent.

It's not too late, Ted! You can go back in the sense that at any point you can re-discover your "youthful enthusiasm" for any activity, especially one as "relatively accessible" as photography. I got my first camera in 1971 at age 12 and I'm still excited to get out there every day. We had a rare ice storm on Feb 23 and it started melting the next day. I spent hours out there on both days and had to keep looking up into the forest canopy trying to avoid getting beaned by any falling limbs (unfortunately, a lot of people lost power due to that), while getting rained on with ice melt and (thankfully small) shards. Not super comfortable, but I managed to get some great images (and I was the only one out there). I've been meaning to get some books together (curation, processing, and printing is so time-consuming--I know--no excuses!) and will try to get something your way in the not-too-distant. It's great that you provide this forum (and you're obviously amassing quite the collection--I'd love to see that online)!

Oh wow, look at that hair! I remembered the first few videos you made, was the teacher in the art of photography. Young, energetic, and always wanted to share your passion to everyone. Look at you! Time has passed so so much. I have kids and family now and glad you're still happy at what you do everyday. I wish you good health and may your fire for this channel keep on burning! 🔥

+1 to the quarto size that Casper chose. i'm reading a history of paper right now and, after the sections on China and the Middle East, the author has been describing how the printing press arrived in Europe in the 1400s and how printing took off in the 1500s with the protestant revolutions. he describes the move away from enormous handwritten books on parchment, down to printed books on paper, as something key for adoption and growth of the medium and the spread of the ideas contained within. also, as someone who loves books, i appreciate how small books let me squeeze a few more into my collection and my luggage :)

I was really hoping you would talk about "story telling". Loved the review of the collections captured in print... but.... you never talked about story telling. If I had to find a label for what I do, its an imperfect capture of the world around me. In high school my photo teach used to label me as captain dust. I've never been one to lean towards the perfect capture... the technical side, but capturing the world as I saw it. I've been in many "discussions" around if photography is about the "art" or the story, with many making the good point it is really rare to capture a story in an image. You lend your critique of some of these books to that, that the collection builds a story of who or what the photographer saw. But I would love a deeper discussion of how does one actually tell stories with images....

some of these Zines are pushing the boundaries of what I think of a Zines. These are more like actual books. Zines were much more diy and raw when I saw them in the Punk, Metal and Motorcycle days of the 70's and 80's !....times they are a changin' !

Ted, thanks for another tremendously informative book review. This gave great ideas to incorporate into my book, which you reviewed a few weeks ago. I'm looking for a recommendation where to get my book published. I use Blurb but they charge so much, every time I sell one, the patron gets a book and an apology for the price. Thanks again, Eugene
