You have some good ideas there however you forgot the insulation. That would be a great advantage. You could then make them into condensing hives which would be cool in summer and warm in winter with much greater survial rate. Bees would alsobe much further ahead by spring too...

Commented having built my own hives and found by having inner and outer 25 mm wood sides with 25mm quality foam board sandwiched in between, plus 75mm foam under 25mm roof bees do exceptionally well all year round. Have zero ventilation on top and a small amount on bottom. Have 100mm gap on base below frames which allows for circulation of air. Bees do cleansing flights as low as 6 degrees centigrade which hellps keep them healthy. Because they have no need to cluster tightly through cold they consume far less stores (50% less) and often do not need feeding in autumn. Drape Varroa strips soaked in oxalic acid and glucerine over alternate frames in brood box work eceptionally well. Replace every 6 weeks in summer. Strips are made from compact cardboard. These are used extensively in New Zealand. They are used with supers in place. Being organic and with organic acid occuring naturally in some plants it is totally safe and has no effect on honey. Syrips should always bee applied with protective gloves. Beequip in NZ sell them and there plenty of videos on their use by them on TH-cam.

Good observation. The best way to prevent bee loss is to close the entrance at night. The next morning just as the sun is rising remove the 5 frames because the bees are clustered tightly to the frames. There will be a few bees lost and hopefully they will make there way into the other Nucleus colonies because their entrance is closed. If I’m reloading the chamber to make another 5 frame colony then I don’t worry about the loss bees because they become part of the new colony.
