Getting your BMW X5 E53 dash gauges to work again

  • After a low battery or jump start you may lose all your dash lights and gauge functions. This video will show how to reset your dash by pulling fuses 1, 43, and 45, turn the key to position 2 for several seconds, remove the key, reinstall fuses. At the end of the video you’ll see my 4x4 light on but it went out as soon as I pulled out of the garage.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! My mechanic couldn't fix it and I had thoughts of scrapping the car, but gave your video tips a try and...almost in tears because I can keep the car now. 2007 BMX X5 had different fuses, etc but the basic technique you described worked!

    Just to say, massive thank you for posting this video - 2005 e53 4.8is - This very morning just decided it would give all lights showing but no needle movement. Turning the ignition off left the dash lights on and the exterior lights on and to top it off the key then stopped working.
    This fix has just resolved it!

    Thanks brotha it helped me with myE38 you pointed me in the right direction, PEOPLE if you have a E38 and I'm pretty sure with other BMWs look for INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in the fuse box and remove all the number fuses and do what this video did but not the same number fuses follow what days on your fuse box and turn the key without the fuses and then put the fuses back and start it and it should work, this happened to me because my car battery died and I jumped it and the lights and the gauges didn't work so I did this and it worked, thanks again brotha from anotha motha

    Maaaate!! Much appreciated. I have an E53 4.4 v8. Needed a little work but sorted everything out after visiting a few wreckers etc. down to one thing now. Found a wrecked 4.8 car. My dash was cracked due to
    previous owners being a bit rough. I’ve since fitted the nice grey faced gauge dash into mine. Works sweet sure but a couple of things not displayed but 4x4 light is continuously running so I will try the fuse removal trick.
    Much appreciated
    Cheers 🍻

      If only your 4x4 light is on, I don’t think this trick will fix it. Sometimes the 4x4 light stays on for a few miles after a computer reset. If it doesn’t doesn’t go out on its own, then probably something else is going on. Probably a TH-cam video about it somewhere.

    • @djdale.5806
      @djdale.5806 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AK907dude yes the 4x4 light was never burning until I replaced the cluster unit. I do have a OBD plug in unit I can find & isolate the problem that way.

      @@djdale.5806 I had 3 different lights on last year, 4x4, brake and something else. OBD scanner didn’t tell me the issue. I hooked up a PC and INPA software, translated the German and narrowed it down to a broken wire going to the front left wheel. Hopefully your light goes off after driving it a bit.

      MrBikercat if your gauges are working but just the background lights go dim, that is normal if you are driving in the daytime. If it’s happening at night as well then I would say there is something wrong with the rain/light sensor behind your review mirror.
