How a pressure washer unloader valve works (with cut-away view)

- This video shows the unloader valve in a cut away of a 2700 psi Homelite Pressure Washer. After watching this video you may be able to get your pressure washer to build pressure again.
Please note: I am not a mechanic and I do not work on these things for a living. I’ve only worked on one pressure washer in my life and this video is the result of that. After watching this video you should know more or the same about pressure washers as me. So I’ll apologize in advance if I don’t know the answer to any questions.

Why does the pressure lease valve keep squirting water?

Agree. I was planning to type the very same but you already did. I love the videos that get to the point and are in detail. Even at the end as he explained the valve, I'm thinking, "ok, what way increases and decreases" then bam, he explained if more pressure, tighten spring.
Your pump sacrifice was not completely in vain. The cutaway visual helped me tremendously diagnose my own issues. Thanks for the video!
WOW!!!!! 5 years later and your knowledge is still saving the day and only took me 7-8 videos of people who, I don’t know or can’t say what their talking about but if I listened to half of them I would have purchased an entire new pump but thought, DAM I only have 2 hours on this $375 rig and it just can’t be the pump but then I found your video and BINGO!!!
Such an easy fix and will now know it until my dying day!!!!

I have a Homelite 2200psi gas pressure washer that stopped working. There were no leaks in the pump but there was very low pressure. I took the pump apart and unstuck the little piston with a few taps from a screwdriver handle just like this video says. Put it back together and it now works perfect with full pressure. Thanks, you saved me the price of a new pump!

UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust th-cam.com/users/postUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.

Awesome! I wish I saw this a week ago, but better late than never. This needs to be number one in search results for power washer trouble shooting. Search result say to check this valve, but nowhere to explain how or why. All units seem to have this same assembly, a little attention here saves money and time! With this, you can buy rejects in yard sales and get em going to resell for $$$. Thank you Mr Morgan!

Same here - picked one up from a sale site for free - it was destroyed inside from broken bearings, seized up valves and so on. Now just awaiting a new bearing being delivered and can rebuild and test. 160 bar pressure washer for the cost of a new bearing (£2.50) 👍🏻

Very helpful I had that exact problem with a used power washer along with gas shut off problem. All fixed for $6.00 a 3000 psi paid $5.00 for the machine. Thank you :)

Thanks for putting that up. My unloaded valve was stuck and I didn’t understand what was going on.
Here is some knowledge. The device you're displaying is an integrated unloader, with dual-bypass. The small bypass is used to unload the pump until a certain pressure is reached. This makes it easier to start the pump/engine assembly. The large bypass is used to unload the pump when a certain pressure is reached. This stops run-away pressure and dramatically reduces wear on the pump seals, when not spraying. However, if left in this state for any length of time, temperature and wear increase. Always stop the pump if you're not spraying for more than a minute or two. Also, the unloader is not to be used as variable pressure adjustment. That's what different orifice-size tips are for.

Thank you!! I “inherited” a GC160 Honda powerwasher and pulled it out to try to get it going today. Did the basics. Pulled plug, checked for spark, cleared cylinder, squirt some fuel in cylinder and intake and she fired right up. Put water to her and she acted like she seized up. Quick search points to the unloader valve, which I had no idea about. I used it all day after I figured out that once I relieved pressure by pulling hose wand trigger, it would free up and start again. As long as I ran it and kept the trigger pulled it ran perfect. There were a few times it ran perfect intermittently and would stay running once I released trigger; but that was short lived. NOW I KNOW. I’ll check tomorrow and see if that is the culprit. I’d guess it was based on how rusted the pressure hose was (nearly rusted SHUT at the pump connection).

NOW THAT IS A HELPFUL VIDEO. I don't think you understand Corey what a relief it is to find a concise, brief and easy to follow self help video like yours among an ocean of prolific idiots. My hobby is dirt bikes and you best believe every banjo playing goober in the Appalachian Mountains that puts gas in an old motorcycle and it accidentally starts??!! That makes him a certified you tube master mechanic. Don't get me wrong-in the not too distant future- I WILL EVENTUALLY PERFORM OPEN HEART SURGERY using no more than 4 or 5 you tube self help videos.

Thanks for the explanation Corey. For those of you that aren't aware you should never adjust your pressure using the unloader valve. To decrease/increase pressure change out your tips.
What tips exactly?

What happen if i increase the pressure at that spring ? will it blow my pump seal and hose ?
I don’t think he’s talking about changing it regularly to tailor the pressure for a particular job. He’s talking about setting it once so the pressure is correctly set for the engine power.

Excellent explanation ! Thank you for the effort !! I will tighten the spring mine looks just like this .. Water more water comes from open holes than before rebuild. It builds pressure but no enough as it once did..
My real problem then was no pressure but with water coming out. Then later, having enough pressure but the pump is not stopping even when the wand was released. Then I saw your video. That's really really, man.. Appreciate it.

Thanks for a clear video. Troy built unloader valve doesn’t hat the tiny spring mechanism on top, it’s have the large stuff spring on outside like yours. My problem is once it have pressure it’s won’t spray or leak any water out but when I loosen the unloader then I’d get some water dripping out.

I know your posting was is 3 years old, but I'm having the same problem you were. Mine is only 2 years old and when I squeeze the trigger there is a huge amount of pressure for 2 second, and then just dribbles out. Happens every time. Did you need to replace your pump or was it this problem?
@@garytman007 I found out if you keep pulling the trigger on and off it eventually clears the air in the pump ( air bound) I have picked up 2 free pressure washers that had the same problem and when I did the on and off it cleared the air in the pump.

@@garytman007 Also at the end of the season if you live where gets cold below freezing like here in New England. I would run some pressure washer lube thru the pump. It forces out all the water and lubes the springs inside. The lube is available at Lowes,Home Depot and any good hardware store. Seems some don’t do this and the pump freezes and cracks from the left over water inside. Thanks and good luck.

I needed to do that several years back-(like 2004) but was always afraid to take it apart...bought a new pump for 50 bucks and gave the old one away.... geesh. a few minutes of unafraid tinkering would have been soooo much cheaper! DOH!!! thank you for explaining it all, I am sure it's going to come in handy!
I tried to tinker with mine, but didn’t realize the whole unloader valve assembly came out. Just bought a new pump for it 80 bucks (that’s how much they cost now) wish I would’ve seen this video first…
