  • Before Adam Savage watched Blade Runner 2049, he stepped behind the scenes of the film's secretive production and visited the prop department where prop master Doug Harlocker and his team built intricate hand props, weapons, and futuristic wearable devices. Doug walks Adam through the some of these hero and stunt props, including many that you may now recognize. Very minor spoilers within!

      KADArt Cosplay I paused the video and came to the comments immediately after that, I laughed pretty hard and needed to see if other people picked up on it. I hope Adam watches this video and notices that little Easter egg. "This entire skeleton could fit in a lady's purse" Subtle foreshadowing Mr. Harlocker.

    • @TheVictoriousShot
      @TheVictoriousShot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not subtle by any definition of the word. He used that specific quote because in the script the prop is required to literally fit in a purse. That’d be like saying “Bruce Willis is a ghost” is foreshadowing. His wife not paying attention to him, the little details themself are foreshadowing, not the act in question. “The gun needs to fit on a holster on his waist.”

    It would be amazing for films like this, if the studios would release detailed plans of the props. People talking about the film and recreating the props (to greater accuracy because of the plans) would keep the fandoms alive and the films in the heads of the masses.

      For a lot of it they are just standing still. You wouldn’t need a secondary shooter just a second camera on a tripod camera or as you said on a slider. Other option is just use a zoom lens and get coverage of the props being spoken about after the interview and tour sections. I suspect it’s a budget reason for only having 1 shooter

      Clearly you have never watched the original. Blade Runner was so good BECAUSE it didn't get down to the level of every other scifi action movie of the time. The Blade Runner franchise is pure sci-fi mixed with film noir, and relies on suspense and character exploration rather than on shiny action scenes and fast moving shots. Blade Runner will linger on a scene or a dialogue and rub your nose in it. BR2049 was really good, and I am glad Denis Villeneuve continued on his uncompromising trend he has been on. Montreal represent!

      I haven't seen the movie yet, so I can't comment on if it was good or not, but too much action is basically what's ruining a lot of movies nowadays. Look at all of the Marvel movies. It's basically 99% running around fighting and blowing up shit, and 1% story. I'd appreciate the action so much more if there was only a select few scenes where the shit hit the fan.

    In the toolkit... Top "drawer" looks like a ring over a spoon... its a chalazion clamp, and its for eyelid surgery. And in the opposite top shelf there appears to be a Bishop-Harmon tissue forceps. Ad there's 3 sets of Westcott tenotomy scissors. All of which are used in eye surgery. Love to know why they chose to use those instruments. Just a fun fact.

    I wonder if Adam has the Johnnie Walker Director's Cut. It's a Limited Edition of the Black Label made for Blade Runner 2049. Really cool bottle shape too.

      I would love to own one because the bottle shape is beautiful in its own right and especially because it's from Bladerunner and I would easily have the discipline to never open it because Johnny Walker is a truly foul, cheap and shitty scotch. (Although I haven't tried the Blue Label but the black and red are truly dire)

    Worth noting for prop makers. The radio is -NOT- a Russian radio. It is a United States Korea to Vietnam era AN/PRC-6 walkie-talkie radio. Antenna is spring mounted, so it's fine, he didn't snap it off. Screw cover on the bottom covers a plug for a headset, allowing the radio to be used benchtop. Could have prop-modding capabilities. Radio is getting rare, it'd be cool to see a mold taken of one.

    Watching Adam trying to contain himself. The tension in his folded arms... the little twitches in his neck and face. It's like a 10 year old trying to be calm has he stands in front of the counter in a candy store.

    The paint jobs on those rubber prop versions are so great that I would honestly consider opting to buy one of those guns over the hero prop... I mean, of course, the hero close up prop is the holy grail, but the rubber prop looks good enough while still being sturdy enough to handle by a fumbler like myself without shitting myself with fear that I would destroy it with a misplaced muscle movement.

    (Spoiler) I absolutely love the memory creation device. It looks so much like an analog camera lense. Cameras, like memories, can be windows to the soul. I love how they keep the analogesque feel. In this alternate world, digital never really took off, but analog tech really continues to be perfected. Brilliant.

      Trust me, they digitally and conceptually designed thousands of things too. These are the ones that are specific to main character interactions. Also, Directors work differently than others. Peter was meticulous and specific, where as Denis gives a lot of power to his designers and engineers to craft the world based on his outlines. As you can see Doug talks about how it was his decision for pretty specific and major prop designs, where as Peter is incredibly involved and perfectionist so he killed himself on those movies working on *everything*. Hence why he doesn't really direct movies like that anymore. I think it worked out obviously, but I think he realized he couldn't sustain that, as obvious by the Hobbit movies.

    I would love the illustrators/city designers in the movie to do a map of Los Angeles as in the Blade runner universe. Do a complete wireframe or in depth map of the buildings, how high they are, what companies they belong to. Where they LA in the blade runner is compared to real life. For example, hollywood hills, the habour area ect. I loved the visual fly by in Blade Runner I'd just want more of it. How many people live there, how much does it expand ect.
