- This One Day Build is a prop replica from one of Adam's favorite films of 2017, Blade Runner 2049! In making Deckard's binoculars from the movie, Adam starts with a 3D-printed model designed around working optics, and adds plenty of his own customized parts for accuracy!

Love the total absence of music throughout these videos so we can hear all the machine sounds and silence. Such a nice soundtrack to the process of building.

@@ThavronMakes There's a bit of music in the beginning, then at the end, but other than that there was no music while he was working, unless I missed a tiny part where they added some music for a small portion, other than that there's just the music of stuff being made and Adam telling us about the process.
I listen to him while drawing. It's nice to hear someone working while you're creating something yourself. XD
Considering how comprehensive Adam's workshop is I am still constantly amazed how he so haphazardly spray paints his hands and surrounding tools. It would drive me crazy to work for any length of time with my hands coated by spray paint.

that's a common trait of industry veterans. In commercials, your turn around time can be in the span of days or even sometimes hours for small, intricate set pieces, so getting used to using your body somewhat like a prop to work on is an easy way to help speed up the process.
Youve all missed the real reason. Its because it doesnt matter .the goal in complete the mission/ build /job some paint on you're fingers isnt even on the radar
Artists seriously don't have the left-brain capacity to think about things like that once the right brain takes over. That's why 4hrs can feel like 40min - our right brains are in control and we immerse ourselves into the work.
A weathering solution used by model railroaders from the 50's to present is to make a mix of rubbing alcohol and black leather shoe dye. The shoe dye is your pigment with the alcohol as the carrier and solvent. Mix up a solution of about 1:8 dye to alcohol. Put all of that into a glass tall jar, shake it up, and then let it sit undisturbed for a day. Let it settle out. Now when you go to use it, you'll have variable density at different levels to pull from with a brush. More pigment the deeper you go. With alcohol as the solvent, it flashes off quickly. It's fantastic for giving depth to cracks, seams, and details. And it's CHEAP.

For flaking paint, as you'd see on metal surfaces, paint the surface with grey/metallics, then dab on rubber cement in the areas you want the paint to flake. Paint your top color coat, and when dry, use masking tape to pull off the rubber cement. You'll have a wonderful flaky scabbed surface where you want it.

Rusty crusty surfaces on plastic are easy to do by pooling styrene cement (or MEK in well ventilated areas) and dusting on earth tone chalks. It will give a scabby surface that is permanent and durable. Not enough effect? Repeat for more rust.
I think Adam would go crazy if he could never weather things, lol. Imagine if he got hired as a prop guy onto a movie where they want him to provide 100s of pristine, brand new looking items for a factory assembly line scene, aka zero weather required and you CAN'T weather them, lol. I think he'd start to go nuts with his "weathering boner" after awhile :D

There's a company that makes rust and patina paints. You prime the surface, then paint on the iron or copper paint, then spray the activator. It creates a 100% real rust or patina effect without damaging the item

I know what you mean. It's a shame a lot of the build was spent either out of focus, panning across the shop or watching Adam's back. They should really use the camera operator that films the podcasts. I think their name is T Ripod. I can't believe that some of the more artsy shots actually made my eyes water from trying to focus on a moving pulled focus shot.
Less playing with the camera and more concentrating on the actual build part please.
What I actually saw of the build was great.
Maxx B, i felt the same. It gave me the feeling the camera person got lost on what was being filmed (our beloved one day build) and started thinking the camera work was more important than actually showing the whole one day build as well as possible. Somehow i think the name of the camera person rhymes with storm.

Something about just watching Adam work that is very fulfilling. The way Adam loves what he does, how everything should be done to the best of his abilites and the ambience of the work environment - just wow. Ofcourse the great camera work and editing adds so much it wouldn't be what it is whit out the way the material is presented.
I will never get tired of watching this man work. I always leave these videos inspired and feeling like I could make anything in the world. I love that Adam is so enthusiastic about new materials and techniques even when he doesn't know a lot about them. That he who has so many skills and so much experience has no qualms saying "the experts are probably screaming at me right now, but who cares, I'm learning" makes creating feel so incredibly accessible, and it's one of my favorite things about Adam.

Honestly, wasn't all that impressed with the camera man. He was way too focused on the tools in the background or on Adam's face. There were a couple times Adam was talking about stuff on the table, but the table was kept out of the frame. Adam's an awesome guy, but I don't watch these videos just to stare at him.
As a Medical pot user i find these videos to be deeply relaxing and fantastic to watch ... im so thnkful you kept on doing things like youtube and podcasts. you sir are a soul more people should experiance. Awesome content and thank you for the laughs and lessons given. as a long time fan it is a positive thing in my life . CHEERS ADAM!!!
There's something about watching Adam work in almost silence that is incredibly soothing and fascinating.
I like creative camera shots... when they're not obstructing my view of what's actually being done. I'm seeing Adam doing things, but I'm not getting a clear view of WHAT he's doing. Please keep that in mind when doing the fancy camera shots. Thanks.

Any chance you guys could spend more time on shots that actually show the material being worked? I'm 7 minutes in and I've seen lots of cuts between angles of Adam working, but I have no clue what's happened to the material until he's finished a step.
All the swooping camera moves and cuts are making me *nauseous.*
A few cuts between angles or zooms are ok, but this video seems to be nothing but cuts, zooms, and sweeps for *no* *freaking* *reason.*
EDIT:Just finished the watching, please shoot/edit the videos like the extra bit at the end. It has just enough cuts so you can see what is happening and keep it interesting. Save the fancy camera moves for the beginning and showing the finished product, with maybe a few for transitions between steps. Thanks.

25:40 I love the addition of the very "Blade Runner" style music.
a little recommendation from a pro spray painter instead of using the Montana Gold range of spraypaints use the Montana Black range instead as it's a more durable/thicker paint with a nicer finish.
the new Black formula is really nice if you haven't tried it. And there's always my favourite Molotow Premium line. For the green the Camouflage or Amazonas and Signal Red colours are a close match to the actual prop.

the problem with thicker paints is they tend to obscure details. You are better off having more coats of a thinner paint than a thicker paint that ruins fine detail.
There are two types of Montana paints. The real one and the faux brand after that legal dispute. Montana made in Germany and MTN (Montana Colors) from Spain. Do you know the # or color name so I know which one to get? Thanks! EDIT: Nevermind. I see you said Montana Gold so that's the real stuff.

I think your builds are absolutely amazing and your attention to detail is incredible. Upon rewatching Blade Runner 2049 I took a special notice to the memory editor device used in the movie. The rotating disks and buttons clicking together reminded me of an old school film reel camera. After hearing about your enthusiasm about Blade Runner and it's various technological devices, I think it would be a very interesting build for you. I hope you are able to read this and if not I understand. You will be busy bringing awesome tech to life with your own special touch. I can't wait to see your next video!
I find just listening to this man and see him work with all his passion and dedication so incredibly soothing it does wonders for my GAD. The other dude is fine but when it's just Adam working and talking it's so damn relaxing.

I'm currently training to be a prop/model maker for film and I learn so much from this channel. It's amazing. I love Adam's making process, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside

I completely appreciate the amount of time and work that went into this video. However, if the focus could be more on the making and less on the aesthetics of the shots, that would be really helpful to me. Jump cuts and focus shifts make it visually appealing, but for someone who is really interested in the minutiae of what Adam is doing, it's no help at all. I do appreciate that the narrative that was kept is really informational.

This video is one of the most relaxing things to watch on a sunday evening. I can perfectly empathize with Adam's joy and glee with every little step towards the final goal. Maybe we should use this video as a Mercer test.
Have you ever tried acrylic powder instead of baking soda, added to CA adhesive? This powder is used a lot in nail salons for nail extensions and used with CA makes for a very strong yet shapable material for filling gaps and building up areas. I use it in aircraft modeling and it is great as it is smooth an precise and very strong.
I always loved these gadget props from scifi movies as a kid. They almost never made it into the toy lines so making it yourself was the only option. Sadly my medium was cardboard and duct tape. Mr. Savage blows my mind.

@@PabloBianchiOK They didn't add anything. That tone is coming from a mixture of various pieces of equipment in the shop, along with the lighting - it just get's buried in the mix most of the time because of the EQ on Adam's voice that they apply in post. This particular audio clip was aimed directly at the scraping, so we are hearing everything present in that range.

I don't know why, but I kind of like the sound. I'm an artist/maker and I work with exacto knives a lot - so that sound has come to represent productivity/creativity. Or maybe I'm just a psycho. Lol!

Just now had a chance to watch this episode. I love your enthusiasm. You remind me of me when I built a lot of stuff as a poor kid in the 70s. My parents didn't have a lot of money so I was constantly on my bike finding scraps and parts to make my own toys. Working sailboats, kites, go-cart from a lawn mower engine and plywood (Break was a rocker bar grinding against the spinning rear axle till I could cut the throttle). God it was fast. Those were fun times.

Hey Adam, try turning the fuser temperature up on the printer for that high gloss silver paper. It might help it to stay on better.

As a matter of fact, yes, I was wondering.
Easy, using industrial grade acetone or non odor mineral spirits. (I'm a masonry worker and that'll usually leaving the most stained and dirty tools or hands brand new)
Olveron he doesn’t. He makes new ones every day in case of mistakes. (See Adam savage’s 5 minute molds for more details)

I noticed that too... I also noticed it appears there where come continuity errors in the editing as it appears the paint vanishes only to return again.

This entire video is Adam's stubbornness to avoid learning how to modify STL files.
That's what I was thinking. And he already had to flip it because it was backwards; which is, admittedly, much easier than editing the actual geometry, but a few minutes in Blender would have been a good learning experience, and would have saved him the trouble of having to physically modify the parts after printing.
I would like to see anyone make a prop with only a 3D printer, that looks as good as Adam's build.
Tyler Scott You couldn't. Not with just a 3d printer. But the main shell of this project was already 3D printed. We are just saying that most of the modifications he had to make could have been done much quicker if he had just modified the model before printing.

no, you misunderstand, overtight tolerance ISN’T super accuracy, it’s a mistake in not allowing for materials thickness, assembly order and angles clearance. He is stating it as an error of his, not a statement of super duper accuracy.

That doesn't make sense. Tolerance being "too tight" is a design error. It means he assumed the part could be fabricated more accurately than he could actually manage.

I really do wince when Adam starts using spray paints/glues while he’s still wearing his Planet Ocean Chrono. I love the guy to bits but that just makes me die a little inside.

Adam's process on weathering props has to be the gold standard for most prop makers out there. It went from home project to film ready instantly.
