When do you start calling? Say you go in blind not sure if turkeys are around. 530 is shooting light, are you calling before or after that?

I typically try to locate them with an owl call first in the morning and then start calling as turkey just before sunrise.

Always locate. I've used Crow, hoot owl and red tail hawk. They all work great. After that, get as close as you can to where you heard them without spooking them. Then that's when you start calling.
You'll find that there are several different types of birds that you'll encounter. You'll get the hot bird that comes right in no problem. You'll get the bird that gets hung up and don't want to come to you and then you'll get the bird that will gobble but he'll walk away from you. Don't beat yourself to death over any. If a bird is hung up, try to move on him if you can and if you can't, don't worry about it. That's just sturky hunting.
I like to put my decoys about 25 yards behind me so they don't get caught up in front of me.
