  • You don't need a claim to find great gold. There are great public reserves all over the world set aside for people to enjoy the pastime of gold panning without having to own a claim. In this video I take you to the Tranquille public gold panning area and show what kind of gold can be found by anyone.

Dan, if you're walking along a river or whereever and feel the need to dip a pan, what do you look for to know that a place is claimed?

onafixedincome I’m in the US but claims will usually have claim markers if the people take care of and mark there claims correctly. If they don’t then it’s almost impossible to know unless you go to the BLM bureau of land management or the office of parks and recreation....that is how it basically works in the US. I’m sure Canada is similar but I don’t know all there offices there. I hope this helps a little if your in Canada and helps a lot if you are in the US👍

That site is known as Pine park and was at one time the piggery for the Tranquille TB hospital and community. It is now the site used by the Kamloops school district for school children to release Coho salmon fry and learn about the history of the area. Exactly where you were digging is where the children go down to release the salmon they have been raising in tanks in their classrooms from eggs. After more than 120 years legend has it that the mother load in the hills of Tranquille has yet to be found.

I have to say this is my favorite video of gold panning. Gives me the inspiration to get out and pan here locally. My health has never been the best and I love outdoors stuff. I have Cystic Fibrosis and very old for the illness 66. Yet due to these type of things I do get out. I have survived a double lung transplant 22 yrs ago. Kidney Transplant 13 but having some kidney trouble again now not so bad I won't get out. I'm also a cancer survivor. I'm an insurance companies nightmare. Great job Dan I watch a lot of youtube channels on gold and metal detecting. Thanks for what you do.

That old bathroom/gazebo/playground that you were at was the place I would go as a kid in my school to release the salmon we would keep! It was a yearly thing and we would have lunch and games and stuff, good times for sure! I believe besides that it doubled as a hatchery location or something although I’m not super certain. Excited to see more stuff like this in the future!

In the US you are allowed to prospect in most areas outside of existing claims. Most of this activity would take place on US Forest Service land. In the state of Washington the Dept of Fish and Wildlife have a pamphlet that spells out where on a creek or river, what equipment you can use, and what time of year you can prospect. Some places are 6 months a year, some places are two weeks depending on the spawning density of certain ocean going fish. There is a mining law(prospecting would be a better term) still on the books to protect this right although states are allowed to impose additional regulations. The Forest Service will go to certain lengths to discourage you.

Up here in Keweenaw Peninsula Michigan we are allowed to pan on Lake Superior. All one will find is the smallest of flour gold. You are allowed to pan, a quarter once per year. In most places it would take you a year. Most people pan the black sand. I treat it like a creek and look for bedrock or slate. The gold will deposit there over the years. In the black sand the gold can be washed away during a storm. Really enjoyed your video and the nice gold that you recovered. Thanks Dan.

Took my Dad to Mission Creek in Kelowna to teach him to pan a few days ago. Its a public area that you can pan. We parked in the public area along the Greenway walking/biking trail at the end of Hollywood Rd. South. Walked along the trail until we crossed the first bridge and panned the gravels on the inside bend just upstrean from the bridge. Found a few colours in every pan. Apparently the gold is a bit better further up river, just be sure not to pan on the Indian Reserve land further up without permission.
I think I'll try Tranquille this week, thanks for the tip Dan!

The recreational (pay to pan) gold panning places around here are salted gold, in other words, it has gold placed into the streams, usually low grade gold from old jewelry. You can tell by the color of the gold.

On the vertical gold hog sluice, I think a second tote below the first and a small shute to transfer The water from first tote to second remove bucket put pump in second tote would work much better only my opinion I enjoy watching your videos very informative thanks

Marshland insect repellent by Clark & Co. out of S E Texas makes an outstanding product. I believe they're out of Port Arthur, Tx and fairly certain they ship to Canada, I highly recommend their product .

Checked out the Yale panning reserve on Saturday for about an hour. Got quite a few chunks of fly poop but that was it. If I would have had more time I am sure we could have found more than we did. But a nice relaxing spot to pan and enjoy the Fraser river.

Panned the reserve on the goat river at Creston about 10 years ago. Would love to go back now that I know more. Drove north of Revelstoke about 8 years ago to try the panning reserve on the Goldstream River. Didn’t dip the pan in as it was a very intimidating area and directions to get there or find it were horrible. Beautiful drive and ended up going all the way to the Mica dam and picked some rocks😃. The Wildhorse reserve was fun. Did that 3 years ago. Did find some decent gold and met some great people👍🏽😃 keep at er Dan. Love your vids

Hi. Last year I watched a ton of your videos and they inspired me try out panning as an activity I could enjoy with my boys. We went to the exact same place as you show in your video. Kinda weird to see a big time celebrity like you 😀 go to the same place. Anyways, 10/10 would highly recommend this gold panning reserve for families. Bring food for a picnic at the table under the gazebo. Short hike for kids of any age. Maybe 1km. Go in the spring to avoid the bugs. Thanks Dan. Your videos are more than just entertainment. They inspire others too.

One of my favorite places to look for gold was a little creek just north of Trinity Lake , Laura Ingall Lake. it was called snow gulch .there are lots of Mines above it and in the old days they used to pour a lot of Mercury. All the gold we found there was mercury gold when you get to the bottom of a crevasse it would be a long line of silver shimmery Mercury and it was full of small pieces and fine gold. you hike to the top of the mountain and there are still ore cars and an old hydro cannon.
