  • In episode 2 of this wilderness survival series we seek out monster sea clams on the beaches of Maine, USA. The goal is to replace any calories we burn foraging for wild foods in order to balance our energy expenditures as modern foragers. SHOVEL: amzn.to/2L5XEfB.
This shovel can interchange with the axe, pick-axe, trekking pole and ice pick. There are also extension tubes to make the handle longer, all of them can be found at the Amazon store: amzn.to/2L5XEfB.

We start off the day eating alewife or river herring which we dip netted the day before. I'll make fish egg and milt stew or soup which is full of energy and calories. This is all about survival and eating the foods that we can easily forage and scavenge from wild sources. We are really trying to balance our calories eating only wild edibles.
We will show you how to cook and clean the clams and eat the stomach. We will remove the skin and also purge and wash the clams and boil in water.

The Wilderness Living Challenge is not a "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern hunter gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and weight out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
Check out Zach Fowler: / @fowlersmakeryandmischief
Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

100 grams of clams are 148 calories and 25.5 grams of protein and 2.0 grams of fat and 5.1 carbs.
    Great job Chris and Zack.

So next math...how many pounds would you need to eat for 2500 calories (maintenance) and 3500 (high activity)! These are seriously lacking in fats. That calc probably fails to take the stomachs into account. I focused on those most as I learned what my body felt was worthwhile.

    • @mrtank1967
      @mrtank1967 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Good math Chris hope you’re tummy handles all that clam. Eating beaver seems better 😂

      @@TheWoodedBeardsman The math looks like this: 2500 (3500) / 148 X 100 / 456 = 3.7 - 5.2 lbs or 1.69 - 2.4 kg. And if I messed up the math rest-a-sured someone will correct me. LOL

So next question in this very important calculation and probably something I should pin, because it's the crux of what we're doing here is....can YOU eat 5.2 lbs of CLAMS in one day?!?!!? How do people even live! Isn't this amazing?

    • @mrtank1967

Tip: On collecting filter-feeders such as clams, muscles, oysters, even crawfish and crabs... Place them a 5gal bucket and cover with water and add 1/2 cup cornstarch, stir it into the water. Let them soak. In about 20-30 min, the filter feeder will have spit out the sand and grit while sucking up the cornstarch. Makes them much easier to eat.

I have one set of this combo shovel for going geoduck fishing, which turned out ineffective, too small to dig thru the thick sandmuds... works for the video-like beach digging for clamps and mussels maybe...

My grand father was a commercial clammer in Maine. He took me out digging with him a few times. I was able to get a half bushel . He dug up 3 bushels in one tide. We had clam chowder, fried clams, raw clams calm strips, just bout every way you can prepare to eat one or just raw. A peck is one quarter of a bushel.

    Full Stop!!!👍
For the first time you look tired. I could almost feel the energy drag. Then to see all of your attitudes change as you were eating and the calories were taking effect. It was an interesting watch for sure.
Now the wait begins to Friday.

It's hard to explain this to the viewer, so I'm glad you saw it! I'm not super heavy, so I notice missed meals very quickly. Zach was always okay...never really suffering too badly, but obviously prefers a good meal to not having one.
