      That storm looked awfully similar to one Augsut 21st that chased us out of Narrow Hills Provincial Park

      @puddlejumper-sk  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ya this was in early August in 2023. It was very cool watching it roll in but its always a little scary not knowing what damage the storm is going to do. Storms are probably the #1 thing I'm scared of in the Saskatchewan bush.
      Thanks for watching!🍺

    Thanks for sharing your trip, brings back memories when I did this trip many years ago. There was not all those signs of human activity on those portages when I went through, ATVS, boats, motors, trailers, processed wood, etc.. The wild rice was just starting up at the time and was not choking out the portage trail heads. The portage was not there to my memory at Besnard Creek, we just lined and paddled its length, was not as much water going down it as you experienced. Thanks for sharing your trip, enjoy your plant descriptions

      No problem, just hope you enjoyed it! Ya, I'm a little envious of the people that came before me. Things are slowly becoming less remote and so much more accessible. What year did you do this trip?
      Cheers! 🍺

      @ we did this trip back in the early 90’s, but the wear and tear of sites up north is becoming more noticeable. Especially around along the Churchill and Otter Rapids area. Our group of paddlers started going further north, Fond du Lac, Waterhen, Wind, Snake, Nahanni, Stikine, Spatzizi. A person doesn’t realize the foot print wilderness campers make until you visit the same areas years later. What you and others provide with your videos of wilderness canoeing is a double edged sword, there is an element of people who want to do these trips but they leave behind large foot prints of their presence. My 2 to 3 week canoe trips are coming to an end and I am more leaning towards paddling into a small lake a couple of portages in from a road. Setting up camp for 2 or 3 days do some pickerel fishing and relax. Seeing some of those small lakes you have paddled across has brought back memories of paddle strokes gone bye and given me some ideas of what to do next in the back country.

      @@jlons1104 Ya….the camp site I ended up on at the end of the video was really camped out. There was garbage, fishing tackle, bunny hug, etc all over the site. A bunch of trees were chopped down too. It seemed to be a popular site use by fisherman and canoeists for a long time. You’re right about the double-edged sword, I’m trying to raise awareness about Saskatchewan canoe trips, but with more use comes more degradation. I would talk more about camp etiquette, but I don’t want to be preachy.
      You seem like a really accomplished paddler. Any recommendations for Saskatchewan?

      @@puddlejumper-sk I notice from your videos that you do the lake to lake paddles. That is how I started out in the beginning, as the years went by we became more comfortable in moving water, running the rapids between lakes. Then we started doing river trips, never looked back, no paddling into the wind ( you know when you’re going in the right direction when you’re paddling into the wind ), fewer portages, wasn’t a all day paddle, and we could cover km’s in a short time. My favourite river has to be the Fond du Lac, Waterfound Bay to Black Lake. You are in the Athabasca Basin, the terrain is more open, fantastic camping, great pickerel fishing. The Cree is also a nice river, not as big as the Fond du Lac, finding a camp site in spots can be tricky, need to plan your day. Big “ jacks “ in this river, heavier bush for camping. The only downside in river trips is you up your risk as in getting yourself in trouble, capsized canoe, damaged canoe, more wildlife encounters, there is no one to come help you, helicopter means big $$$. The Waterfound is a nice river also, one big rapid leaving Waterbury Lake but nice easy river afterwords, good camping. John, one of the guys I was with, broke an ankle on this trip running from a bear that chasing him. Brought the bear right into camp! Friends did the Hawkrock a few years ago, nice class 1 -2 rapids, road access, fly out. Flows into the Fond du Lac, they pulled out at the Porcupine confluence .

    Awesome possum.....man, after 25+ years of knocking around the high country of Colorado there is only 1 thing that scares me in the backcountry and that's lightning!!....you just can't hide from it

    • @puddlejumper-sk
      @puddlejumper-sk  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ya...totally agree. The lighting and big winds scare the hell out of me. A plow wind will snap a swath of trees on to you. This storm looked as it was going to be bad but there wasn't a lot of lighting over top of me. All's well that ends well.
      Thanks for watching!

    That shelf cloud was daunting for sure. A real shame with all the abandoned ATV’s and motor boats stashed everywhere. On a positive note though that is some beautiful country and paddling.

    • @puddlejumper-sk
      @puddlejumper-sk  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The first part was really gorgeous, some truly beautiful landscape. Also, I didn't really show it but the water quality on Besnard was awesome. Lining down Besnard Creek was amazing as well.
      Ya that's the thing, with all the fishing resorts, canoeists, wild rice harvesting, cabins and trap lines, things tend to get overused. The part of the route I'm on is a very well-traveled, once I get up to the Sandy River it starts to get wilder.
      Happy New Years and Thanks for watching! 🍺
