"The Color Rule has to apply to first *and* last name!" *Stares in James Ironwood, Pyrrha Nikos, Cardin Winchester, Elm Ederne, Marrow Amin, Klein Sieben, Scarlet David, Sage Ayana and Vine Zeki) The Color Name Rule is really fun and honestly one of my favorite parts of making an OC is coming up with a name that matches the Vibe I want for a character *and* the associated color I have in mind, but while many characters do have a color in both their first and last name, it is not a requirement that *both* names have some sort of color association. Trust me, when you spend so long doing being the Name Guy that you end up creating a spreadsheet of over 1800 color-name-compliant names, you tend to notice a pattern or three in canon.
Honestly I think this is one of the most fun aspects of making RWBY OCs, especially when the color actually has meaning in how it relates to the characters' backstory/personality
believe me, it's harder then you think. I have a ton of Ocs and I even had to turn to Google translate to get a color name in another langauge a few times (main oc: Norwegian name).
@Pizza Passta I know that feeling, When RWBY start the Color ruling, it took me about over a month to find a right kind of color name of both characters and team, at the same time. Worst, the weapons names that reflect them with a color name was even HARDER. Can you believe that.
@Pizza Passta When thats the tricky part about the names, I usually pick the team name than later the character names. Theme of each team needs to reflect on their story, myth, action, or even reflects on animal, and etc. The trick is, you chose what character you want, but I believe that the characters from your fav story or legend, even history, choses you to form the best team you got. The Color helps to see the big understanding that can helps open wide you designs. It can be hard but once done than you feel how Monty feels when RWBY was created.
@@wildfire_ If you know how the japan naming system works you will under stand the japan system is by using their last name like Ray san cause the R is named Zelena Ray and Lie Ren is the same
I think using last names is completely fine. With 4 members on a team, there is only 8 letters to work with to form the team name and one of the members has to have their initial first as the leader of the team, so whatever makes it work lol
The best thing about this rule is that Monty has created a unifying experience for many RWBY fan writers creating teams and characters. I don't know if I can speak for everyone, but I also have spent countless hours searching through the colour wiki, translating colors through different languages, finding different alternatives, combining, separating and mixing words and I'm sure many others as well.
See my issue is that either you try and follow the naming yourself after a color or something that sounds like a color or you go can go very vague with the second part, my oc uses the second part but isnt terribly vague, blaze ignus
My OC Jade Sparrow is the leader of team JADE compromised of: Jade Sparrow Azul Ciel Daisy Gold-Draco Evergreen Draco They're based on myth and literature Jade - Jack Sparrow Azul - Fionn Mac Cumhail Daisy - Apollo Evergreen - Siegfried This ties in bcoz a lot of myths are written down in literature and the theme of the team is characters who faced strife
When i first read the color naming rule when redesigning one of my old rwby oc teams my brain exploded because despite how easy I thought it would be to name characters after colors and teams after colors, you realize you have to get creative with the names and perform tons of research on names that follow the color rules. (Basically it gets really easy to get confused and stuck on trying to name characters after colors etc, etc.) That said here is my first revision of one of my rwby teams; Team REGL (Regal) "Royal colors like royal purple etc." Radek Rust: colors, reds, reddish-browns (Czech and Slovak origin) Eryk Noir: colors, dark royal purples with blacks (Norse origin) Gwen Noir: colors, whites with black (Polish origin) Lilith Genesis: colors, blacks and midnight blues (Jewish origin) Tell me what you think!
I looked up color names relating to my characters stories and picked and chose (it takes for fucking ever) I went to the extent of getting hex codes for the colors on my 3d model
Please do! I would absolutely fan art 😊 If you do make it, please send it to me on Twitter, Discord or through Email and let me know what name you'd like to be referenced as. I would love to put fan art into the SRPH story videos if you would allow it
Phoenix/Night Alright that sounds great to me. I’ll get started on it right away, and send it to you through Twitter. Any further details will be covered there ^^
Only way around this, characters who are either born in, or live in the time before the great war. Hence my very elderly OC, and even then, he's heavily influenced by Greek myth, and has a marble white and silver color schema to still abide by the rule.
@@WitheringAurora The great war was a world war esque event that took place 80 years before the show started, not the extinction of humanity that Salem caused
@@Rose-the-fox Oh, I SAW other names, ISCL being one, but I wanted the color of the team to match the leader's color, and Iliova's is orange. This was what I could find.
If anyone's wondering, here's my team: Paula Cerulian, the leader of team PXLE Xena Ashes Lium Coral And Enzo Dandi (There is a bit more info on my Deviant art page, being DevanDP)
I’ve created 3 teams so far. Team LVND (Lavender, Theme is royalty under an enchantment) - Lavinia Primrose (purple, Sleeping Beauty) - Vine Moorow (green, The Frog Prince) - Niebie Sliski (blue, The Glass Mountain) - Duncan Braun (brown, Snow White and Rose Red) Team ELMT (Element {grey}, Theme is weather) - Eos Portokáli (Orange, Phaethon and the Sun Chariot) - Larkspur Frosset (periwinkle blue, The Snow Queen) - Akai Maikumo (Red, The Weaver of Clouds) - Alabaster Taube (white, The White Dove) Team DRZY (Druzy {white}, Theme is witches) - Hazel Dun (brown, Hansel and Gretel) - Coral Rutilus (pink/red, The Little Mermaid) - Zinnia Portokáli (orange/pink, Circe) - Yelena Zheltyy (yellow, Baba Yaga)
12:26 Actually, this has been deconfirmed by Kerry Shawcross in a reddit AMA for one of the books (I think Roman Holiday): The rule only applies to one name. As long as one name satisfies it, the other can be literally anything.
First off thank you for taking the time to make this video! Second I was very happy to hear you based your own team off Greek Myths! I'm Greek myself and I could immediately tell which Myths you have based the first two characters of your team off of! Great job and keep up the awesome work!
the color naming rule is definelty hard to work with, but it’s so creative! it causes us creators/fans to get creative when naming our OC’s and so a lot of research
When naming my OC I wanted the color name to have tons of significance so I went with Cawlan Burroughs. Cawlan is a rough translation of grey in Somali and my character is based on Tarzan of the apes who’s real name was John Clayton 3rd earl of Greystroke and his Faunus trait making him a silverback gorilla. As for his last name the author of Tarzan was Edgar Rice Burroughs.
My OC's name is Rei Solaris. Rei being Ray, which is light and light has colors. Solaris, well, solaris from sonic, the sun god. And Solaris has darkness within him despite being light (Mephiles the Dark), relates to the backstory of Rei growing up in a chaotic place and his violent/dark side deep down Semblance: danger boost, increase strength and speed depends on how much danger Rei recognize, key word RECOGNIZE, which means if he was off guard or didn't see the attacks coming, it doesn't activate. tier 1 being normal, tier 2 being "this might hurt", tier 3 being "I might lose", tier 4 being "this is really bad", tier 5 being "if I don't do something, I will die" team member being Duke (duke blue)(last name undecided), semblance: pumper, Duke needs to stand still and puts his arm in a up-side-down L shape and punch downward to increase the striking power of his next attack. Ashe (ash gray)(last name undecided), semblance undecided Tealle (teal)(last name undecided), semblance: color calling, Tealle has to call a color both she and her enemy currently has every minute, then both Tealle and the enemy can only damage each other on areas with that certain color. it works like this, if 90% of Tealle's body was covered by yellow, then her attacks will be massively stronger than it is supposed to be, but the same goes with the enemy, if they hit her in the yellow area, she will receive a lot more damage than what it's supposed to cause team name being radiant (RDAT), because anything related to radiation reminds me green
Actually, albeit by accident, you have a really good naming convention, since the team names usually refer to the leader, and radiant means full of light, shining brightly, and Rei Solaris, literally a ray of light (solaris is [of sol], and sol = sun). With Rei being a part of a greater whole as a ray of light is a part of a star (brightly shining) team. It'd be fitting for Rei to be a charismatic leader, relaying on the teammates and strategizing, since Danger Boost is a defensive/evasive semblance. Tealle also makes it a great refference to the rainbow-like nature of your OC team.
I am good at finding color references for any names. Color allusions with Salem, ozma and ozpin. Oz means deer (browns, white) + pin means ‘dwellers of the pine tree’ which is green. Salem is another name for rosemary which has purple flowers (and green needles). Ozma can derive from ‘osmanthus’ which is a plant with white flowers and green leaves (sometimes other colors like orange and yellow).
Being an author with my own rules in play of my own book . The color naming rule isn't really that much of a problem to Fix on an oc besides oc are supposed to be fun so The more complicated the more in depth You and your character can grow .
This!!! A name to remind you of a colour is very subjective. For example, my one OC is named Nike. That might not bring up a colour to many people, and it might not even bring up the same colour to everyone. To me, Nike is purple (Nike, the goddess of victory, victory always felt like it needed to be a royal colour, therefore purple). Others might find the name Nike to remind them of green or gold (the colours of laurel wreaths in mythology). And in the idea of team names, I have one called FABL (fable), and that definitely doesn’t bring up the idea of a colour to most people. But to me, fable brings up the colour of aged paper and faded book covers. This can also be really different between people who relate things through visual/descriptive mediums. I personally can’t describe abstract things without bringing up colours, shapes and smells (something non abstract). Someone who relates more through logical connections probably won’t understand certain connections that more visual/descriptive relators might (like the statement ‘grape candies taste like purple, not grape’ might not make sense to some people while making the most sense to others). This is kinda why I don’t like the naming rule set for rwby, because it’s either you fit the strict part, or fit the very vague part. And if you try to fit the vague part there are people who will attack you for ‘not following the naming rules’ even though to yourself you are. It can really discourage people from working on and developing their teams, and end up pushing creative minds out of the fandom.
Vearsin Yeah I know some names are really a stretch, (like Harriet according to the RWBY fandom site it means keeper of earth which they say is brown or gold which I call BS on). So because my brain works on logic🤓 I only make names which make you think of a color more objective speaking. Otherwise someone could just be lazy and “claims” that their OC’s name is subjective for a color.
That's my issue as my ocs name is blaze ignus but I feel like that may not quite fit the rule, I just thought fire and ignite would tie to red which is his primary color and ties to his personality
Well. I didn't even know about the rule of color and my OC accidentally fulfilled it. Nathan Grenadilla. Nathan is a Hebrew name meaning 'gift', and most of us would associate a gift with colorful wrappers, parties, etc. Grenadilla is a type of blackwood used in the manufacture of some musical instruments, like the clarinet. So it references both a visual color (blackwood), and color within the context of music (musical notes and chords).
Phew, I was beginning to wreck my brain over the names having to be based on colors. The fact, that I can go as far as just referencing something, that has a very distinctive color makes this so much easier. Also, in the design process, I have so far always started with a weapon and associated fighting style (because I am quite great at cooking up those inside my head and I really enjoy playing around with imaginary, versatile weapons) and went from there, thinking up the semblance, that would be most useful to have with such a weapon and then thinking of the character, who would have and use all of these. The hardest part in all of this, for me, is the final piece in the puzzle, which is the character's backstory, since I have not quite kept track of how the various kingdoms look and function on a grander scale.
this rule in regards to teams is either easy as hell or a living hell, if you have the team name already, easy as shit, if you have the character names 1st however it can be painful, the biggest streach i had for a team name was team SIDD, team Acid
Also here’s an idea for anyone whom wishes to try it. Make a team based on the argonauts. I’m not the best when it comes to ideas and writing for this kind of thing, so might as well allow others to enjoy the idea.
I think the hard part for me when coming up with making an original character would be either the weapon or giving the character itself a backstory, which is something I sometimes struggle with, even with more original stories. But I always have lots of fun with it. 👀
honestly glad that i realized that the color had to be with both names..i never got around to fully developing them, but when i tried to make a ruby oc for a group of friend's oc team, i named him Cerise Coral, both pink colors.
Can confirm that the naming is one of the hardest parts of this whole thing, I had a team theme figured out, and got the general semblances, weapons and colours but the naming part took to longest to finagle with and especially looking up colors and synonyms for various words the make a name that would sound good
With the enlightenment of that both parts of the name have to follow the Color Naming convention I at first though it would be hard but with enough fiddling around I found something that actually worked out in a hilarious manner.
Hey man You have no idea how much effort you're saving me with that "last name" bit, I've been trying to prove that to people for ages. Thanks for settling the debate!
I came up with a name first, and developed my OC around it. Chrys Flowers Chryso means Gold, and Flowers brings many colours to mind, but "chrys flower" is another name for the Chrysanthemum. With that name in mind, I thought of vivid yellow hair, with strands of various other colours(matching the known colours of chrysanthemums), a verdant green armoured dress, and a semblance that absorbs sunlight to augment herself. Maybe not the most unique OC idea, but it's mine
I wasn't aware that both the first and the last name needed you to think of a color. When I made my OC team I only focused on one or the other. It's too late to change their names now as I've written way to much of my story to justify changing their names. I did try to be creative though. Sapphire Zhūwǎng : last name is Chinese for arachne Leon Hyacinthus: last name is latin for the Hyacinth flower. The flower comes in many colors but I was focusing on the yellow one. Akari Sugiraito: last name is Japanese for sugilite which is a pink/purple crystal. Mai Ruyeppelya: last name is Russian for Rueppell for the Rueppell fox which are silver grey in color (and she is a fox faunus). Instead of the first letter of the first name for the team name I used the first letter of the last names. They form team SHRZ which is German for black. I tried to keep the color rule as much as I could and I probably took a light liberty with the team name using only the first letter of the last name but I think it still works.
I loved the naming but the thing that got me with my OCs wasn’t the names or anything but the stories behind the characters, that inspired them. I can’t really have that because my current OC was inspired by the idea of “What if a faunus had their faunus trait in the form of eyes” as in like big irises and vertically elongated pupils. And the other characters were just their teammates that I made to work off each other.
I'm glad someone actually went more in depth on the naming rules. I'd take a random colour, then go with the naming. (I.e. "Ivory". I.V.R.Y). There is something about the concept, that is quite compelling. Also, I think they used Lie Ren's "R", due to the naming of other countries. Like in Japan, they use the family name, followed by the first name. (Son Goku as an example)
I think the most difficult roadblock I have experienced is making a weapon that goes in harmony with the clothing and/or semblance of the character. I have a team (made together with my siblings and cousin) which is based off elements that describe "outer space" in general so they consists of (in no particular order) Cirrica Fleuri, Sentrion Alarum, Perisus Deimos, Equinus Shio (or Xi) (my character).
I actually didn't know the colour naming thing needed to be for both names and honestly that makes a lot of sense, now that I think about it. Much appreciated
One of my biggest challenges was making the character names coincide with the desired team acronyms while also wanting to keep the desired colors for each color.
Seriously, the naming rule is the hardest part when it comes to making RWBY OCs. When I was making my characters, I legitimately spend over a week up thinking up names that followed the rule accordingly.
Had found your channel a few days ago. But yeah, I do enjoy the Color naming rule and really the most fun and the implications implied behind them. Though team names are a drag, but a good exercise is by getting the color names and mad gab them to condense or cut off parts to make a Team acronym. (Kinda cheat sometimes by using Last names too at times…)
I have an entire list in the notes app on my phone of possible RWBY-universe character names and team names and it is S O HARD to come up with them lmaoooo. I'm always adding more when I come across a word I didn't think of
My RWBY character is a wolf Faunus named Sterling, but I was planning to make his team represent two things. Those two things are: Fairy Tale Villains and Norse Mythology.
So for your Team SRPH does the last to in the end P is Poseidon and H is for hades or Hercules in your team? Ps sorry for being a spoiler on that Guest and Phoenix/night sorry to you didn’t mean to do that!
This is such a struggle for myself as well for the fanfic I am currently writing. Now that I know there's an actual naming rule, and a layout for me to follow, I think this might make it slightly easier. I've always loved the name Ryker. It's got a nice, sharp sound to it. Ryker Arkanni is what I have for right now. Arkanni is a placeholder until I have something a bit more inspired (and I honestly just thought it sounded cool, lol). If anyone happens to read this, feel free to drop a suggestion. :)
Hey, let me drop some ideas based on my own comment: Dallas Moss, Wisteria Fuchs, Midori Tachibana, Tabitha Kokkinakis, Neela de Witte, Dandy Lyons, Rosa Adler, Aidan Steele, Cole Deakin, Sterling Parris, Aurelius Rosen, Thamsyn Redford, Leandro Ferrari. These are names that comply to this rule but still sound like names you'd find on God's green Earth. Alternatively, a lot of mainstream surnames based on occupations, geographical features, and nicknames do have color relations, even though some of them can be a bit of a stretch. Like for example Smith, Stoddard, Shepherd, Foster, Potter, Barker, Whitbread, Woods, Stone, Bywater, Greene, Reed, Blunt, Peacock. And all that's just in English. Other languages have surnames which comply to this rule as well.
The fanbase made a giant fucking spreadsheet with over 1600 potential color names. It’s useful, but it puts into perspective how limited naming can be. The “makes-you-think-of-a-color” rule makes this a bit easier, at least.
I’ve made a lot of OC’s so far, all of them followed this naming rule. However, you explaining it makes it 1000% easier to understand and do. Especially for my side characters. You’re awesome man!
In the RWBY D&D game I'm in, we have had so many NPCs from Vacuo that were named after plants that it just kind of became a trend that Vacuo born people were named after plants. How this happened might have had something to do with our DM and myself. My insect faunus was named Sage Fuego. He never actually went by that name because he was separated from his parents when he was young but that was his birth name. Instead he goes by Zilar Rekkr. Funny enough, it does mean silver warrior. He does have silver eyes but in the campaign we mainly have it as silver eyes are a recessive gene. We've worked around the canon information so everything is explainable. Including the genetic lottery. Although, I find the idea of cat + Insect = fish to be highly entertaining especially when it causes our DM a headache XD
I once made an OC team called Vanilla (VNLA): Violet Reach Nick Coppers Lauren Crest Alice Hearts (Sadly, only Alice actually has some inspiration coming from outside of Remnant (Alice in Wonderland), the others don't)
I think I finally have my character's name finished. Well, i'm down to the last couple options to decide from. I went through several stages of turmoil on it though. I think the hardest part was picking something that didn't seem "lazy" or super "common". After combing google translate for a couple hours and a site that provides meanings to names, I finally decided to settle on "Akane" for her first name. Turns out that name means "dark/deep red" My character has dark red hair. As for the last name, I'm still debating a couple options. This is where the next stage of my turmoil settled in though; I didn't want the last name to pull from Japanese origin as well. Seems like too much of a cop out to go with a full name that is Japanese or any one language. So then I spent a large amount of time searching again with small changes each time until I found some options that sound decent enough. The other part of the problem is that just because the name fits the character as shown in present day, doesn't mean that name would make sense at birth. "Akane" fits because of my characters distinct hair color, but at birth, that character would have no hair and thus that name wouldn't make the connection at first. However, "Akane" is still a valid name regardless of any color rules, so it still fits as a good name. And as she grows her hair, the color rule fits into place. Her last name is going to follow the rule of course, and in her case, will be based on her fire semblance. (Again, haven't decided for sure yet) But yeah, this was certainly the hardest part.
As someone who loves color theory and name meaning? Believe me this isn’t an easy in practice. On paper or theory? Easy. In practice? Not easy. Also? I’m so glad last names is an option. It’s why I stuck to gemstone/metals when making my teams. As for the story basis? Strong unsung leads for the girls & zodiac members for the guys. Though the tricky part for me? Writing out fight scenes. I can make weapons, form semblances, build characters but when it comes to describing fights or landscapes? Yeah I struggle there
Never knew about this. But I took a couple of characters I made for my own story and since i am a artist first and for most i wanted to put them into a RWBY look and with weapons fitting RWBY. The Characters' names aren't based on colors but the team is kinda. The names are Zagen, Haran, Eido, and Scyreis. The team is "ESHZ" which me and my co-writer/worker pronounce "ashes" which is a color. So yeah XD just thought this was a fun thing to share 😅
I find the naming rule of rwby to be a bit constrictive in the first part to be honest. While a word or name might make me think of a certain colour, it might not have that same connotation to others. That’s why I like the vague “reminds or is reminiscent of a colour” part and think that that should have just been the base of the rule (names that mean a certain colour are inherently reminiscent of a colour, and same with names that sound like colours). I wanna explain a bit more why I love the vague part of the rule, so I’ll go over my teams names. Let’s take my team NITE (night sky, nebulae, stars, etc) Nike Gam (purple colour theme) Irdesce Shade (iridescence themed) Teal Cuprum (teal and copper themed) Ekta Vermillion (red themed) Most of their names kinda fit, but the two that stand out are Nike Gam and Ekta Vermillion. Nike (named after the goddess of victory) reminds me of purple. Others might associate it with green or gold though, associated with the goddess Nike’s laurel crown. But to me, purple is the colour of victory, so I chose a victory themed name to represent the colour. Last name is Gam. Gam is a really dark shade of purple, but it isn’t the main colour in Nike’s design, a bright purple is. Ekta technically isn’t a real name from all my research. But, I couldn’t find a fitting, harsh sounding “red” name for him. But to me, jarring sound connections are “red” or give of a feeling of red. So I made up a jarring sounding connection, that being Ekta (eh-kuh-ta), with the ‘kt’ being the jarred connection so I could have a harsh sounding name. Vermillion is a shade of red, but not the shade of red in his design, as vermillion is a bit more orange tones than a true red. Now, if I hadn’t explained those names, I could definitely see people slamming me for “not following the naming rule” with them. And there probably are people who, even with the explanation, might do that. But, the reason I ended up naming them like that is because of how I associate colour to language and other senses. It’s kind like how “sad” is related to the colour blue, but more expansive. Sad isn’t just blue to me, it’s a very specific shade of a muted deep blue that you might see on a rainy day when the sky just barely peeks through the clouds or in parts where the clouds are very thin. But melancholy, another type of sadness, is a completely different type of blue, like a desaturated cyan or a desaturated greeny teal. But others probably won’t make those same colour connections. It’s also similar to how “grape candies taste purple, not grape” makes sense to some people and not others (a personal example, salt tastes pale yellow to me. That most definitely doesn’t make sense to most, but if I was told that by someone else, I’d completely agree). And like that, certain associations are very different to me (Yang is reminiscent of yellow, sorta sounding like it, but it makes me think of black and white, like a traditional ying yang symbol. And her last name I associate with the colours red and gold, as Xiaolong translates to little dragon, and dragons being often portrayed as red and gold in traditional Chinese art). But since others may not associate colours with things the way I do, it might not make sense to them and they might think it doesn’t follow the rule. The stricter part of the rule preceding the vague part kinda makes the vague part seem like it shouldn’t be used that often, and feels kinda stifling. Some people are also purist buttfaces on this topic. If it doesn’t fit a colour to them, they harass the creator of the OC/team (hasn’t happened to me, but I’ve seen people lose interest in their teams after being bum rushed by “THAT NAME DOESN’T FIT THE NAME RULE, YOU NEED TO CHANGE IT!!1!!1!” types of comments, when the creator actually personally links the names to colours they associate them with). I really would prefer if people weren’t so strict about the name rule, because being that way has sadly caused the end of some really promising looking teams by avid (and a lot of the time younger) fans. That’s essentially why I dislike how the naming rule is set up. But hey, that’s just my opinion 🤷♀️
This really helps me think of names for teams for oc's that i still need to think of but atleast I have the team that I love and try to find a color in my first oc's of team TEAL
The most difficult part for me is figuring out which colour to use for the Team Acronym, so I've started doing two things, the first is designing characters and keeping note of them if I can't find a Team/Colour for them, and the second is make the Team Acronym first and find colours and names to fit it, because I don't(or at least very rarely) have the colour play an important part of the character(I know I should, and I might start doing so when my current process gets easier/faster), currently the only character whose colour is important is Mars(haven't given her a last name yet), as her colour is red thinking going to have her team be named for the planets/celestial bodies.
I think I did my OC right, I'm not sure. When looking up colours I ran across the colour: Quinacridone Magenta, a type off darkish red and went with Quinella. I also wanted to base my character of as a bunny faunus based on Thumper from the fairytale Bambi and just went with Thumps as it's also part off her fighting style, being more off a kicker. And when thinking off Thumper it's a Grey bunny with a Cottontail, so I wanted the trait to be a cottontail. I also whote a entire backstory for her to keep the theme of tha Bambi story with coming up with a deer grimm. So I have no idea if I did it right, because yes I did understand that the names where based on colours, this was also stated in the first volume of RWBY when the arrived at Beacon academy. Allthough some are really a stretch. Like Reese Chloris, who litterally means ardent, fiery, so that again is a stretch to come up with passion and passion is normally depicted as pink or red.
Yeah this is a lot harder than I thought lol. Love the video, i know I'm a tad late to the party (just watched the whole series last week), but I'm excited to try and make some OCs!!!
For the team naming first vs last thing, I always took it to mean that it’s the name that the characters prefer to be called. In the case of team BRNZ, I think she prefers to go with the nickname “Z” or “Zed” and it just goes by any nickname that character would like to go by
I just couldn't think of any names, until it just clicked. Team AASH Ashe-(Dr. Grange, Edward Safran, Dr. Girasole, Hunter Leiche, Byzantine Van Lazuursteen, and Mardi Braut) Alice Smyl Sangria De Ville Heather Lupus(maybe) I had to come up with 11 different names, the struggle was REAL!
I may get some flak for this, but for stories set somewhat immediately after The War, I feel that the Colour Name Rule would start off as a small trend that would eventually gain traction. So it could potentially justify non-CNR names for some stories until enough time passes to the point everyone does it. I personally don't think it would be realistic if everyone were to use the CNR at the same time the moment the War was over.
hmmm i see your point. however, most people place their OC’s in the same time period as the current events of RWBY, so the CRN is needed. but if you were making a character that is active right after the great war, you could get away with not using the rule, since the character was before before/during the great war
The naming rule I actully find to be really hard since I had already names picked out for two of my characters. As some one who is part of many fandoms I have a couple of OCs that I work into the world somehow always retaining the same name and general apperance. So having to come up with new names is actually kinda hard cause I have grown attached to the names of Soren and Alistar.
Me and my friends have been putting a team together. Similar to you, we were also inspired by Greek mythology, though we're using monsters, and other supernatural entities exclusively. So far, we only have one complete character, being mine. His name is Aureus Moirai. Aureus, being Latin for auburn, and Moirai being another name for the three fates of Greek mythology. Technically speaking, his full name translates to Auburn Fate.
With my OC, Turquo Mauve. It was easy for his first name since I based it of my eye colour but shorten it. As for the last name, it was rather hard. I searched for a suitable name that I liked, but finally stumbled upon Mauve another term for purple. I wasn’t sure at the time but decided to follow the colour rule for my weapons; Saphrald a harp and Fire for six-shot revolver.
Just got Fantasy Strike F2P in Switch and I just realized... Valerie Rose Heterocromatic Manic Painter Semblance: Colormancer Cyan, Magenta, YELLOW! RAINBOW DISC! Chromatic ORB! Transmutes her Aura through painting motions with her brush, creating concussive splashes of paint or swirls of spinning ink
Funny that Monty would make that rule and then proceed to break it before and after it was even introduced to the canon with Sun *Wukong* , Yatsuhashi Daichi, and Pyrrha Nikos. As far as I know, barring Sun's first name, *none* of them seem to represent a color, or make one think of a color without a visual example.
I just feel like dropping my team here. Petunia Violette - purple Olivia Pearl - white Lucas Azure - blue Travis Dearg - red Their team name is VOLT. (The colour association is yellow) I know that there names don't fully align with the colour naming rule but I tried my hardest and to me each name dose reminded me of a colour.
THANK YOU! I was having a hard time putting a name to a face for my character! This helped in a way. I have a general color I just need a translation on the color to fit into a name.
One detail about Character creation that seems to be ignored (even by the RWBY Producers), is that RWBY characters are based on a character from an existing piece of media, or that characters within a same team share a common element in their character basis: Team RWBY are all based on Grimm Fairy Tales characters (R.R. Hood, Snow White, The Beauty and Goldilocks) Team JNPR are all based on people who crossdressed at one point in their lives (Jeanne d'Arc, Thor, Achiles and Hua Mulan) Can be a character from a fairy tail, a myth or even a historical figure, but most RWBY characters are based on another figure.
This rule is the one I just ignore when it's no longer fun to adhere to. If I have a cool idea for colors, I'll do it, but I prefer to make a character I actually like over following the rules. My first priority is fun, not following the rules. I'm fulfilled by making interesting characters and giving them interesting stories, names are just a bonus.
My OC team is team IDC(S)T (Iridescent) led by Iradessa Loyolar, a winged snowy egret faunus who is more supportive over aggressive in combat. I'm still working on the rest of her team.
"The Color Rule has to apply to first *and* last name!"
*Stares in James Ironwood, Pyrrha Nikos, Cardin Winchester, Elm Ederne, Marrow Amin, Klein Sieben, Scarlet David, Sage Ayana and Vine Zeki)
The Color Name Rule is really fun and honestly one of my favorite parts of making an OC is coming up with a name that matches the Vibe I want for a character *and* the associated color I have in mind, but while many characters do have a color in both their first and last name, it is not a requirement that *both* names have some sort of color association.

I didn’t realize how much thought was put into naming a single character
believe me, it's harder then you think. I have a ton of Ocs and I even had to turn to Google translate to get a color name in another langauge a few times (main oc: Norwegian name).
I spent 6 months trying to get a team name
@@ceciasa3376 I know the feeling. Color naming was really hard but it helps to reflect what design you want to show how much you love it.
This rule gave me Writer's Block.

@@PhoenixNight well yeah.

The color struggle is real. You will spend an unknown amount of time on named unless you get it easy then congrats.

When i first read the color naming rule when redesigning one of my old rwby oc teams my brain exploded because despite how easy I thought it would be to name characters after colors and teams after colors, you realize you have to get creative with the names and perform tons of research on names that follow the color rules. (Basically it gets really easy to get confused and stuck on trying to name characters after colors etc, etc.)
That said here is my first revision of one of my rwby teams;

Eryk Noir: colors, dark royal purples with blacks (Norse origin)
Gwen Noir: colors, whites with black (Polish origin)
Lilith Genesis: colors, blacks and midnight blues (Jewish origin)

I looked up color names relating to my characters stories and picked and chose (it takes for fucking ever) I went to the extent of getting hex codes for the colors on my 3d model

FULLY AGREE
Yeah I realized names can be anywhere from really thought out or really simple.
Out of all my oc's, the intricacies of them vary heavily
When naming my OC I wanted the color name to have tons of significance so I went with Cawlan Burroughs. Cawlan is a rough translation of grey in Somali and my character is based on Tarzan of the apes who’s real name was John Clayton 3rd earl of Greystroke and his Faunus trait making him a silverback gorilla. As for his last name the author of Tarzan was Edgar Rice Burroughs.
My OC's name is Rei Solaris. Rei being Ray, which is light and light has colors. Solaris, well, solaris from sonic, the sun god. And Solaris has darkness within him despite being light (Mephiles the Dark), relates to the backstory of Rei growing up in a chaotic place and his violent/dark side deep down
Semblance: danger boost, increase strength and speed depends on how much danger Rei recognize, key word RECOGNIZE, which means if he was off guard or didn't see the attacks coming, it doesn't activate. tier 1 being normal, tier 2 being "this might hurt", tier 3 being "I might lose", tier 4 being "this is really bad", tier 5 being "if I don't do something, I will die"
team member being Duke (duke blue)(last name undecided), semblance: pumper, Duke needs to stand still and puts his arm in a up-side-down L shape and punch downward to increase the striking power of his next attack.
Ashe (ash gray)(last name undecided), semblance undecided
Tealle (teal)(last name undecided), semblance: color calling, Tealle has to call a color both she and her enemy currently has every minute, then both Tealle and the enemy can only damage each other on areas with that certain color. it works like this, if 90% of Tealle's body was covered by yellow, then her attacks will be massively stronger than it is supposed to be, but the same goes with the enemy, if they hit her in the yellow area, she will receive a lot more damage than what it's supposed to cause
team name being radiant (RDAT), because anything related to radiation reminds me green
Thank you for telling me it does not have to be an actual color it just has to make you think of a color
That is saved me some headaches
The "something that makes you think of a color" thing seems really vague. I feel like any word could potentially make someone think of a color
Probably on purpose so that it's easier
Try to think of your real name then try to associate a color with it you'll find it is harder then you think
The reminds you of a color rule is the greatest loophole to circumvent the rule.
this rule in regards to teams is either easy as hell or a living hell, if you have the team name already, easy as shit, if you have the character names 1st however it can be painful, the biggest streach i had for a team name was team SIDD, team Acid
Also here’s an idea for anyone whom wishes to try it. Make a team based on the argonauts. I’m not the best when it comes to ideas and writing for this kind of thing, so might as well allow others to enjoy the idea.
The color naming rule is such an interesting challenge for writing OCs but its spawned some amazing characters for me.
I always like to imagine Ozpin and Glynda manipulating initiation to make groups that easily make team names
Meanwhile in Atlas:
Ironwood :... and Team...(SIGH) FUNKY
Neon Katt- XD
Flynt Koal- :)
Yanni Kobalt- /:
Ivory Laurel- DX
I think the hard part for me when coming up with making an original character would be either the weapon or giving the character itself a backstory, which is something I sometimes struggle with, even with more original stories. But I always have lots of fun with it. 👀
honestly glad that i realized that the color had to be with both names..i never got around to fully developing them, but when i tried to make a ruby oc for a group of friend's oc team, i named him Cerise Coral, both pink colors.
ah. those rules make sense now. i named my characters differently because i wanted them to be more tribal than anything
This will be useful and the names will certainly be a major pain in the but.
Hey man
You have no idea how much effort you're saving me with that "last name" bit, I've been trying to prove that to people for ages. Thanks for settling the debate!
Glad I was able to help! 😊
I came up with a name first, and developed my OC around it.
Chrys Flowers
Chryso means Gold, and Flowers brings many colours to mind, but "chrys flower" is another name for the Chrysanthemum.
Sapphire Zhūwǎng : last name is Chinese for arachne
Leon Hyacinthus: last name is latin for the Hyacinth flower.
I have several ideas for ocs, and the naming rule is definitely the hardest part.
I thankfully found a way to work around the rule if i have to but it also help to differentiate between how comes from the kingdoms and who doesn’t.
The colour naming rule really gets my head hurting. But this definitely help
I actually didn't know the colour naming thing needed to be for both names and honestly that makes a lot of sense, now that I think about it. Much appreciated
My first OC was named Roselynn Quartz and was part of team RYAL like Royal Purple
I'm always adding more when I come across a word I didn't think of
The colour naming rule is something I never really thought of... Now I need to change Stella's name...
And my second Oc became Verda because green
With Stella I think stellar, which is stars. So in my opinion Stella works!
I don't think you'd need to change the name Stella. It relates to stars/the sun, yellow, etc?
This will now help me with my RWBY OC’s...thank you.
Hey, let me drop some ideas based on my own comment:
Dallas Moss, Wisteria Fuchs, Midori Tachibana, Tabitha Kokkinakis, Neela de Witte, Dandy Lyons, Rosa Adler, Aidan Steele, Cole Deakin, Sterling Parris, Aurelius Rosen, Thamsyn Redford, Leandro Ferrari.
That's a good start!
Step 2, THESAURUS and Google images! XD
Being experienced, I luckily managed to create a team that sorta fits.
Team VALR:
Valen Whitefield,
Alice Armstrong,
Lake Maw,
Royal Scarlet.
I once made an OC team called Vanilla (VNLA):
Violet Reach
Nick Coppers
Lauren Crest
Alice Hearts
(Sadly, only Alice actually has some inspiration coming from outside of Remnant (Alice in Wonderland), the others don't)
(Again, haven't decided for sure yet)
But yeah, this was certainly the hardest part.
Thank you for this information and the video as well. It was definitely needed.
Yeah I struggle there
I like to think with Ren the reason that they use is last name is because he prefers to go by it .
Let’s take my team NITE (night sky, nebulae, stars, etc)
Nike Gam (purple colour theme)
Irdesce Shade (iridescence themed)
Teal Cuprum (teal and copper themed)
Ekta Vermillion (red themed)
Most of their names kinda fit, but the two that stand out are Nike Gam and Ekta Vermillion.
I personally use Behind the Name when naming all my characters, you can search for all names meaning a color
Just pull an Araki and name all your characters after Italian food dishes.
Team BFFT(buffet)
Team SALD(salad)
Color Research had me finding some interesting colors or names but WOW that name is it's own Character ! XD
The hardest part was probably getting a team name as at first I only had one member named. It is a fun experience though.
I can’t wait for a coral or a nyx for orange or black specifically midnight black
Yeah this is a lot harder than I thought lol. Love the video, i know I'm a tad late to the party (just watched the whole series last week), but I'm excited to try and make some OCs!!!
Not late at all! Welcome to the Fandom!
Team AASH
Ashe-(Dr. Grange, Edward Safran, Dr. Girasole, Hunter Leiche, Byzantine Van Lazuursteen, and Mardi Braut)
Alice Smyl
Sangria De Ville
Heather Lupus(maybe)
I had to come up with 11 different names, the struggle was REAL!
I personally associate Salem with the color black because of the Salem Witch Trials.

Thanks for making a video like this, throughout these types of videos I've been imagining my own O.C.
Petunia Violette - purple
Olivia Pearl - white
Lucas Azure - blue
Travis Dearg - red
Their team name is VOLT. (The colour association is yellow)
I know that there names don't fully align with the colour naming rule but I tried my hardest and to me each name dose reminded me of a colour.
THANK YOU! I was having a hard time putting a name to a face for my character! This helped in a way. I have a general color I just need a translation on the color to fit into a name.
istg May Zedong is an allusion to Mao Zedong and they're just not telling us that, it has to be, it's perfect
The writers said it was coincidental. I don’t know how they didn’t notice, but she’s dead now, anyway.
Personally my OC was never taught in one of the schools
So like a rogue teaching themselves
Yep
They'd still need to follow the color naming rule i believe that is if they where born after the great war

Not everyone that can survive in Remnant will make it to an Academy!
One detail about Character creation that seems to be ignored (even by the RWBY Producers), is that RWBY characters are based on a character from an existing piece of media, or that characters within a same team share a common element in their character basis:
Team RWBY are all based on Grimm Fairy Tales characters (R.R. Hood, Snow White, The Beauty and Goldilocks)
Team JNPR are all based on people who crossdressed at one point in their lives (Jeanne d'Arc, Thor, Achiles and Hua Mulan)
Can be a character from a fairy tail, a myth or even a historical figure, but most RWBY characters are based on another figure.
i spent 2 hours trying to find a color based name and i loved and hated every minute
