I just received a new Meta Portal + as a gift. I am low tech and all info is online. Except I have a very important question before I set this up. How can I safely move it to another room? I found no information. Do I shut it down? If so how? Thank you in advance.
I would offer an alternate opinion...and it is largely based on an entirely different, non-business use case. For people trying to keep in touch with elderly parents, the Facebook Portals (all versions) are absolutely fantastic!! I purchased Portals for my Mom (who lives alone, hundreds of miles away), and myself so I can easily converse with her every day, (and sometimes more often than that)! My Mom uses Facebook, hence she already had a Facebook account...so setting up Portal (which uses Facebook Messenger) as a simple video conferencing appliance was easy. We have them positioned in our Kitchens and use them entirely with voice commands. I was able to position my Mom's Portal so she faced a window, so she's well lit and is fairly close so the audio is terrific. When she gets up from the table to go to the stove, or to get another cup of coffee, the auto-tracking camera zooms in and follows her around the room. Surprisingly, the audio stays just fine as well. She uses "Hey Portal.....then a series of commands, like Hey Portal, call Michael...and voila...her Portal rings my Portal (via Messenger) instantly. I can see her and hear her very well. It's not quite like sitting across the table from her....but it's remarkably close and very comfortable. I have breakfast with Mom, nearly every day...and she's hundreds of miles away! She also uses other commands like "Hey Portal...what day is it?" or "Hey Portal, what's the weather today?" or even things like "Hey Portal...tell me a joke" or the latest news or whatever....TOTALLY handsfree! And when we're not in a "conference" it shows a slideshow of photos from her Facebook account. Facebook Portal is really a fantastic way to stay in close touch with others far away. She also uses it to call her granddaughter in Ireland...equally easily! I highly recommend Portal for this limited purpose. Great camera and and audio functionality coupled with tremendous ease of use. BTW, the Portals are just appliances for Facebook Messenger, so any call made to me, simultaneously rings on my phone, iPad and Portal...and I can answer on any of them. Portal has limited Amazon Alexa functionality built-in as well. We use the original 10" Portals and I'm hoping to upgrade to the new 14" Portal Plus discussed here before they're all sold out!
That's exactly my case. I just have bought one Portal Plus in order to allow my parents to keep in touch with overseas relatives. I'm in Barcelona and is not easy to find this devices. Amazon spain is the only way to get it and it is the only one Portal device you can find here. My father has cancer and doctors says there is not much to do. Time is nowadays the most important active and I just bought this device hopping he can say goodby as good as posible to his cousins and brothers.
I got this as a gift. Just trying to watch TH-cam is crap. I'm 10 feet from my router yet video sometimes never upscales and buffers constantly. Can't drop in with Alexa or use it like a security device to look around which is truly moronic given its features. The sound is acceptable. I wish I would have been given a large echo show. The device feels sluggish. I'll see if I can sell it and get something else
Got few facebook/meta portals at home for the family and the kids.... Finally got one device that just is supposed to be a bigger screen... 4K.. etc... and it's literally the worst device. It won't load any videos or youtube videos without lagging miserably and struggling to load 144p videos.... It's not even the internet... Every other device in the house is fine and my internet is more than fine... The more annoying part is that Facebook/Meta or whatever it is now doesn't allow you to contact any customer support service to yell at them anymore because they know their service is garbage. I am happy with the other devices as they keep the family content but I always find myself having issues with facebook in many ways and this just kind of added to it... Was hoping to find a solution for my problem here unfortunately but I couldnt get it.
"the quality of the camera is.. not... too.. bad" - doesnt fill me with enthusiasm. :/ will this device get ditched like the old portal? and if theyve ditched the old portal, is this one not suppsoed to be.. better?
Not sure this would work for businesses. Would businesses want users to have FB accounts? Can you even screen share like Teams or Zoom on a laptop? Unable to record meetings too (not sure if the portal teams app could record meetings).
I have the 1st generation portal plus and I personally think that it lacks a lot of features I would have made it more of a smart display as well as a way of staying in touch via video calls
“It has some sort motion detection, I don’t know if that uses the camera, but it seemed to work when the camera was off as well” Yeaaaaaaah probably not a real cameras disconnect then… Facebook
Why would anyone PAY to have a facebook tracking and data collection device in their home… Or why would ANY sane business trust them with their data (i.e. what gets recorded during a call) after everything that has happened over the last few years.
*The new Meta Portal+ is a new take on productivity and WFH gadgets!*
Let us know your thoughts if you have a Portal+ and/or opinion on the tool!

What did you have clipped onto your shirt? I assume it was a microphone but it looked interesting.
It’s a Rode Wireless Go 2 Mic
Between an iPad mini and a 16 inch laptop, so, like an iPad Pro?
Like an iPad pro but made by a Chinese housewife

But does it run blockchain?
I mean anyone with an iPad wouldn’t need it
this hack worked 100%!!! it's amazing

Never in my home😁

Yea, no thank you. I'd rather not grow my iPad legs in exchange for crippling its performance
That garbage is nothing new from Facebook 🤣🤣🤣
Facebook tech is always so bad 🤣🤣🤣
Interesting idea, poor execution
Silly thing. Useless.
Meta trying to be Apple. :/
