I just recieved the portal tv. I must say, I have been having the best experiences with my video chats now. We chat with the Alexa echo show...but this is the new family phone now!

This might be a dumb question but both people don't need the portal for it to work, correct? I think the adorable mom in this was just using a regular phone. You can still video chat with other people who don't have the portal right?
Indeed. You don’t need a Portal to answer a call from another Portal but I assume the lady here is using a Portal too.

Yes, i called the support and when you initially plug it in you have to leave it for 3 hours for the latest update. Once it updated to the newest software it works great.

for a cheaper alternative, you might wanna consider the lenovo smart display! It supports video calls via Google Duo which I use my relatives all the time
