I'm a photographer. There's a reason that I still regularly sell prints to my clients. Digital picture frames not only SUUUUUCCCCKKKK and are small but are quite distracting, lighting up a dark room on movie night or just switching pictures and messing with your peripheral vision. Prints also of course have actual staying power and aren't just forgotten about like the million pictures from your smartphone.
There are certain tasks that should have hardware dedicated to them, some that have hardware dedicated to them but manage to suck because it wasn't developed/made right, and some that should be rolled into preferred personal computing devices.

There are ways to mitigate even that, like running GrapheneOS on a Pixel 3, but usually you’ll just have to make concessions when it comes to your phone because it’s an essential piece of hardware in a modern world. You can still minimise how much you actually use your phone and only take it out with you when you actually need it. You can also use apps with strong encryption for communication like Signal or Wire. Just because there may be ONE potential ingress into your personal privacy doesn’t mean you should just go hog fucking wild and buy a FaceBook Spy CamTM.
I've just ordered 1 for my mum who is in a care home. During these troubled times with the Corona virus, not being able to visit her, this will cheer her up immensely. All I have to do is make sure the staff plug it in and switch it on and off. So for me this gets the thumbs up 👍

As someone who has been in a long distance relationship for years now, I find this interesting and somewhat useful to me because I video chat with my s/o on a daily basis and often times its hard to make out things on your phone. Having a device specifically for video chat would be very handy for me.

When my brother was in the Navy it was a huge PITA to setup Skype on their computer and coach them on using it, and they still ended up missing half his calls to the computer two rooms away. This sounds like a stone simple plug-and-play solution they could have set on a shelf in the living room and fully understood intuitively.

FWIW made for the grandparents demographic is accurate, I bought a pair last Christmas for my parents and my sister (who lives in a different state), so they could "easily" video chat with my sister's kids without me having to set things up for the call. At first I had to show them how to call my sis & my nieces, or how to answer a call. Now almost a year later, my "I'll only use a computer if it can cook my dinner" mother, is calling her grandkids every other day to read stories at bedtime. I'm still not really a fan, but if it works it works. The only concession I've got them to agree with in the name of privacy, is having the portal on a power strip that they turn on when they use the portal, then off again after. In my book it falls under "it's fine, it does what it does."
My Mums 92 and cant even remember how to use her i pad or her smart phone, she lives in sheltered accommodation 90 miles from where I live. I'm not allowed into her premises and she's not allowed out as things stand, I'm not even sure if I will ever see her again. All I want to know is: Can this be left permanently plugged in, (she will forget to re-charge it) so all she has to do is when I call her, is she walks up to it and presses the icon to connect? I think you've nailed their target demographic with the portal. Everyone who can use a smartphone already has Facebook. The portal is just a device to spread their service to others
It's actually better than the Google Homes/Echos because it actually has a calendar like the others you have to go through a slideshow in order to get to a calendar and at the wrong time you may not even see it. Plus camera for zoom calls and etc. All I wanted was an always on Calendar with features so it actually was useful but $150 is way too expensive but $49 is much more reasonable and I know they are discontinuing it though
The size is what kills it for me. If there were a portal extension, or portal interface for something like a tv I would be down for it. The ability to make full room calls would honestly be a really nice feature to have for anyone who lives far away from family and can't make holidays.
Well they did make the portal TV which is a camera back to next to your TV and it has a remote it can be used like a streaming device also and you can make video calls on it
Although I'm not touching it, I do like the idea of physical shutters. Somebody brought over a laptop they wanted help with, and I noticed the camera had tape over it. At first I thought it was pretty silly, but then I remembered I actually did that myself on a phone, which might be even worse. It is hard to trust the phone has things off when it seems it does, they don't tend to be the most transparent of devices. I'd love to have hardware mute on the mic. (Doesn't mean it isn't listening 100% of the time it's on, though...)

I had an idea last year about making a facebook picture frame. Why do digital picture frames seem like a good idea but no one ever really uses or likes them? Because they get boring really fast and it is a pain in the ass to update them. What if the frame was linked up to facebook and you could choose the friends and family you would want to update that frame with pictures they post online. Than you could always get surprise pictures coming up maybe even some with you in it.
I bought 3 one for myself and one for my parents and grandparents. Video Conferencing has come a long way and it only makes sense when you live to far way from loved one that you can't always drive or fly to see them. I would recommend the facebook portal. Also my best friend just bought 2 for him and his family.

i remember the push for video phones back in the late 80s, the idea immediately died. the flaw for the first commercialized units was you have to have the same exact phone in both houses for it to work, this only slightly expands that idea. Way to go with your old idea recycling!

FWIW made for the grandparents demographic is accurate, I bought a pair last Christmas for my parents and my sister (who lives in a different state), so they could "easily" video chat with my sister's kids without me having to set things up for the call. At first I had to show them how to call my sis & my nieces, or how to answer a call. Now almost a year later, my "I'll only use a computer if it can cook my dinner" mother, is calling her grandkids every other day to read stories at bedtime.
I'm still not really a fan, but if it works it works. The only concession I've got them to agree with in the name of privacy, is having the portal on a power strip that they turn on when they use the portal, then off again after. In my book it falls under "it's fine, it does what it does."
My Mums 92 and cant even remember how to use her i pad or her smart phone, she lives in sheltered accommodation 90 miles from where I live. I'm not allowed into her premises and she's not allowed out as things stand, I'm not even sure if I will ever see her again.
All I want to know is: Can this be left permanently plugged in, (she will forget to re-charge it) so all she has to do is when I call her, is she walks up to it and presses the icon to connect? Not interested in any other features as they will be lost on her. Thanks

It's actually better than the Google Homes/Echos because it actually has a calendar like the others you have to go through a slideshow in order to get to a calendar and at the wrong time you may not even see it. Plus camera for zoom calls and etc. All I wanted was an always on Calendar with features so it actually was useful but $150 is way too expensive but $49 is much more reasonable and I know they are discontinuing it though
The size is what kills it for me. If there were a portal extension, or portal interface for something like a tv I would be down for it. The ability to make full room calls would honestly be a really nice feature to have for anyone who lives far away from family and can't make holidays.
Well they did make the portal TV which is a camera back to next to your TV and it has a remote it can be used like a streaming device also and you can make video calls on it

Although I'm not touching it, I do like the idea of physical shutters. Somebody brought over a laptop they wanted help with, and I noticed the camera had tape over it. At first I thought it was pretty silly, but then I remembered I actually did that myself on a phone, which might be even worse. It is hard to trust the phone has things off when it seems it does, they don't tend to be the most transparent of devices. I'd love to have hardware mute on the mic. (Doesn't mean it isn't listening 100% of the time it's on, though...)

I had an idea last year about making a facebook picture frame. Why do digital picture frames seem like a good idea but no one ever really uses or likes them? Because they get boring really fast and it is a pain in the ass to update them. What if the frame was linked up to facebook and you could choose the friends and family you would want to update that frame with pictures they post online. Than you could always get surprise pictures coming up maybe even some with you in it.
I bought 3 one for myself and one for my parents and grandparents. Video Conferencing has come a long way and it only makes sense when you live to far way from loved one that you can't always drive or fly to see them. I would recommend the facebook portal. Also my best friend just bought 2 for him and his family.

@@flameshana9 considering that it's partly vertical video and that the product is visible in that crappy video, I doubt they had a second one there (or the ability to save video from the device).

i remember the push for video phones back in the late 80s, the idea immediately died. the flaw for the first commercialized units was you have to have the same exact phone in both houses for it to work, this only slightly expands that idea. Way to go with your old idea recycling!
It's doesn't matter what they say. It's not that hard to imagine Facebook admitting they "accidentally" upload your video to their servers and saying "it's a bug".
