If I may drop a suggestion: Gift pricing? Don't Starve Together has this dilemma of being a friendly multiplayer game from an indie studio. As in, you want friends to play with but no one else will own a copy. So they sell the game in bundles of 2, so that you can gift the other copy to an IRL friend. I passed my second copy to a friend, who liked it and bought another set for two more friends. Rivals is also an indie friendly multiplayer game, so it stands to reason that it might benefit from a similar scheme. Maybe a bundle price of 2 copies for 1.5x?
I think a better idea for a game like this would be to have a guest pass system similar to It Takes Two. Maybe only provide a smaller subset of characters for that guest pass to encourage the demo players to buy the full game.
I think that is a feature that Steam removed a long time ago, it's only there still for old games that enrolled into that option and kept it since then.
Can I also suggest victory screen animations as another unlockable? Also any plans for stage skins and music? I absolutely love that as part of the MILESTONE SYSTEM! Being taken to a stage skins you've not seen by an opponent showed that they've been playing that character a long as time and made that next battle feel like boss fight compared to the usual ranked matches.
This seems like a lot more development, but also seems pretty doable when you consider that lots of other games also do highlight animations, like Overwatch. If this wouldn't be too hard for them to do at least two for each character, that would be so sick. I imagine that would be further down the development line though, skins are more impactful and likely less difficult to develop.
They have previously stated that victory animations as an unlockable are very unlikely, as animating them is a LOT of work and expensive compared to producing skins, among other things.
Stage cosmetics is an interesting idea. I imagine you could have each player customize their stage, you could do whole skins or you can make it as specific as changing certain props, floor textures, skybox, etc. Then either it randomizes each player's stage in an online match or maybe winner of the previous set gets to have it.
That make sense. I guess it would also depend on the type development team they still have. They've been very open about the fact that they've needed to let go of team members that they couldn't afford to keep on, so it's impossible to know what skills they have available to them. Music and stage skins are definitely my wishlist item.

HUGE respect for this. In terms of monetizing a game like this post launch, I think this is the best way to do it with customers/players in mind. Cosmetics only with a way to earn them through play, and a way to pay to get them right away if you want to further support the game. My only thing is the game honestly could’ve been $40 and I don’t think people would’ve complained LOL
no fomo, reasonable(ish) skin prices, free currency accumulation, free characters and modes. what's not to love? what about stages though? are those going to be free like new characters?
I think the biggest upside is the transparency. Letting people know certain aspects are free and what you’re doing to accommodate that is good. A recent trend of gaming and the internet in general is the selling of user data, so not going “hey, here’s some free stuff! Ignore the new targeted ads” is nice
Reminder: The Xbox version of ROA1 hasnt been updated since 2019. The platform the game first launched on. We've had definitive editions for everyone else and a sequel.
The one thing I don't like is that the coin shop pressures you to check in every day, which creates habitual play and addiction. Season Pass items being dropped into the coin shop afterward is great, but the coin shop being gacha-like means there's still some FOMO for grinding out the pass, so you don't have to deal with the coin shop checking process.
I really appreciate how much there will be to unlock at launch. A lot of multiplayer games fall flat despite having good gameplay because there's not much content beyond "online matchmaking". Including little things to unlock is a bigger deal than many people think.
This is such a HUGE W in the current state of the industry. You guys rock. I'm voting with my wallet here. That axolotl Orcane skin is a day one for me.
Great stuff! I'm very happy that the premium skins are exactly 10$ worth of currency. No "bonus amount" or being just under the amount required to buy a skin... Really player friendly stuff, the way it oughta be. Can't wait to play ;3
Holy cow it’s like if Multiversus followed their perfectly fine currency system back in beta but made earning larger amounts of gold in shorter amounts of time a thing 😮
@@franciscovaldes4107but also you can earn some of that currency in game by just leveling characters making it possible to get a skin entirely for free!
@@franciscovaldes4107 ... did you miss the entire point? The premium skins are purposefully expensive because their MAIN purpose is supporting the devs, noone needs a skin to have any advantage whatsoever. Every future character will ALREADY be free
@@franciscovaldes4107 Understandable, but that wasn't what I was getting at; A lot of games tend to do the hot dog/bun amount thing where you buy a certain amount of currency but it doesn't match the amount of currency needed to buy a single thing. But in Rivals 2, you spend $10, buy a skin, and there will be no unnecessary currency left over. That's what I'm happy about
@@franciscovaldes4107 Yeah, Smash and their pay2win characters. In Rivals 2 we get all of the DLC characters for FREE. I rather spend my money on a skin that does nothing but looking fancy than buying blocky Jack Black with auto win function.
Just politely asking for Lox to have a super taunt where if he has full charge and holds taunt, he makes a lil throne to sit on. Thank you so much for listening.
Personally I think exclusivity is a far bigger issue than cost, so I'm very pleased to hear that the limited-time "pass" items will cycle into the shop!
I’m glad you can get everything just by playing the game, though I’m always iffy on micro transactions for in game currency, I’m glad it’s optional. But I really hope that it’s not insanely hard to get bucks without paying like in some games.
I live in Brazil, and games here are more on the expensive side. However, I also firmly support having paid Battle Passes, as long as the price is fair. I really enjoy getting skins and supporting the games I love.
I'm excited to buy cosmetics. Normally I don't spend money like that but I'm excited to. Just hoping anything released for a limited time comes back frequently enough that fomo isn't too bad.
Doesn't multiversus have powerups that you equip before battle that you have to unlock for a charactervia grinding or money? maybe that was what they were talking about@@Subzermk24567
I just want to go out on a limb here and say I'd much rather have seen the single player chapters as the long term dlc. It doesn't really feel much better to me too have the little guy do microtransactions. Being cosmetic doesn't mean they don't have phycological impact and affect my relationship with the game. I figure this is probably something ya'll have already debated with your decision, but I also don't want to be completely silent about my feelings. I think something like this is a heavy enough compromise that it warrants a more serious and vulnerable conversation about why this direction was taken, and sharing the understanding of the problems with this approach. It'd also be nice to have some accessibility options for outright hiding the cash shop and related cosmetics. Maybe on a slightly granular level? So you could hide any reminder of skins, but leave alt-colors or spawn platforms or something. It'd also be nice to like, just have an optional subscription for the game? Just give me a little badge and I'm good. Along with hiding stuff. Maaaybe let me pick x amount of cosmetics for Christmas or something, after y time with the sub? That could include an exception to have only those cosmetics show on other players. Just something so I can perceive these as little as possible, while I guess not feeling completely left out since Pandora's box has been opened and I'm going to be seeing the stuff on TH-cam. Maybe consult some physiologists to see what's advisable? I think that should be necessary whenever even broaching monetization like this.
Sounds like a solid business model! All I ask is that the bundles of aether bucks are comparable to the price of these cosmetics. For example, if skins cost 500 AB each, and a player wants just one skin, they should be able to buy 500 AB to get that skin. So this means the skin ends up effectively costing $5. What do you think? Sounds good?
$10 For a skin does feel like a lot, but it's hard to be mad when the rest of the game treats you well and you don t have to buy new characters. I kinda want to give them my money now.
Honestly, I can't really complain about this when there's gonna be free dlc characters and I can just unlock stuff by playing. Solid approach, I'm excited for it.
Honestly, this is one of my favorite games of all time now, simply because of the monetization. So fair and un-greedy. Frankly, every game should be like this
honestly I think one of the most relieving things for me is that it appears that the premium skins are worth the exact amount of currency you can buy, so we're avoiding a SF6 situation where you're forced to pay more for a skin than its actually worth because of how they price the currency. I'm still probably gonna be wary of the pay for currency model, but honestly, no fomo and all the characters free seems like a good trade off so far, and I hope the studio can keep going without getting too greedy with it
I'm gonna be honest: No. I'm not getting this anymore. I don't care if you're making some skins freely available through play or making the DLC characters added later on free with no unlock conditions or payments needed, this is a still a BAD monetization practice. A currency you buy with real money being used to circumvent progression is a red flag that has never not been the result of a predatory scheme. You are basically admitting to the player that you're waiting for them to fork over some more money to skip to the good stuff. It doesn't reflect well on the game or yourselves as developers. Rotating shops are meant to pressure people into buying something or else they just have to wait for it to circle back around or waste more money buying out the shop to see it again later. You can very easily just sell the Aether Bucks skins for straight money. 1000 Aether Bucks is ten dollars. If this is about allowing players to support you, you can just say that the skins cost ten dollars without it sounding too pricey because the entire point is that the player would want to spend that on their own. It may require some more conversion on your end for other territories, but it's also less confusing for the user. If you really need to keep the currencies as they are, just have both shops be static and let players buy what they want with the coins. No cycling things around or swapping things around based on what's been bought. This monetization format is made to MANIPULATE people, and I sincerely hope you keep that in mind moving forward at the very least.

Honestly this is I think the best system you can have. It really shows how you guys thought about this.
I really like the cosmetics system, it's simple and does not lock any gameplay element behind grind, good job!
Man, I'm so excited. Can't wait to get Lovers of Aether skins for my mains. Also I adore the Aether Studios team so much. You guys are champs.
I think the biggest upside is the transparency. Letting people know certain aspects are free and what you’re doing to accommodate that is good. A recent trend of gaming and the internet in general is the selling of user data, so not going “hey, here’s some free stuff! Ignore the new targeted ads” is nice
Wow this is the best monetization model I've seen. I'd be proud to support this game
This will be my non stop grind for the next 2 years and you best believe i'll be spending that cash. Im so sad i missed the kickstarter
SAME
If this comes out on console I will be buying it immediately. I cannot play MVS anymore
Amazing, I can't wait. I was expecting this to be 40 bucks but being 30 is an awesome price.
The game is looking incredible, in every aspect. So excited!
"my weakness is that i care too much" ahh video😭
I TEAR MY HEART OPEN
Reminder: The Xbox version of ROA1 hasnt been updated since 2019.
The platform the game first launched on.
We've had definitive editions for everyone else and a sequel.
The one thing I don't like is that the coin shop pressures you to check in every day, which creates habitual play and addiction. Season Pass items being dropped into the coin shop afterward is great, but the coin shop being gacha-like means there's still some FOMO for grinding out the pass, so you don't have to deal with the coin shop checking process.
Although not having custom color slots is a bit of a bummer, these cosmetics looks great!
Event cosmetics go to the shop forever, this is definitely what I was hoping for, thanks!
Fr, Beta MVS had better currency system, and they didn't put characters behind a paywall battlepass
2:44 The prices match the cost of the skins you guys are SAINTS
Well yeah but a skin is freaking 10 dolars, thats a whole 2 characters in smash ultimate
Thank you so much for listening.
such good news. I AM SO HYPE FOR THIS GAME!!!
Partnering with TO's and Organizers to get event specific skins for majors could be so sick if it happens. I am so excited for this
Personally I think exclusivity is a far bigger issue than cost, so I'm very pleased to hear that the limited-time "pass" items will cycle into the shop!
I’m glad you can get everything just by playing the game, though I’m always iffy on micro transactions for in game currency, I’m glad it’s optional. But I really hope that it’s not insanely hard to get bucks without paying like in some games.
Dan tysm for this the lack of FOMO is gonna keep me on the game even more
This was pretty much my prediction for how it'd work, and it's probably the best system. Well done Aether
already doing immensely better than Multiversus. Let's keep this game alive as long as possible, people ❤
You guys are amazing. I can’t wait to give you more money, hell yeah.
This game is the future, so incredibly excited
2:38 Item called Trailer Absa
Gee I wonder who the first post launch character is
Rivals 2 casually being peak in the platform fighting genre
I am so excited for this game. I am stepping away from smash to just play this. I believe in this game!
I live in Brazil, and games here are more on the expensive side. However, I also firmly support having paid Battle Passes, as long as the price is fair. I really enjoy getting skins and supporting the games I love.
i hope south american servers are also is consistently full with players
I'm excited to buy cosmetics. Normally I don't spend money like that but I'm excited to. Just hoping anything released for a limited time comes back frequently enough that fomo isn't too bad.
It sounds like the only fomo stuff will be for physical events you can attend, like big tournaments and such
@@joshford256 sweet. Imma be real I only half listened to the video since I'm at work.
I didn't realize how much I wanted to see Clairen with a normal broadsword until I saw her with what looks like a chainsword(?) at 1:38
Chef loxodont is so hilarious to me
Looking great! I can't believe it's finally getting released! Still hoping for a Clairessa skin for Clairen, would get it instantly
3:44
Psst! Hey, MultiVersus! You hear that? That’s the sound of these devs *flipping you the bird*
Wait, cosmetic affect gameplay in MultiVersus?
@@tallystuffno this brother tripping
@@Subzermk24567skins are literally required to complete the pve mode
Doesn't multiversus have powerups that you equip before battle that you have to unlock for a charactervia grinding or money? maybe that was what they were talking about@@Subzermk24567
so is multiversus a boogeyman in the platfighter space now
"You'll have to do just a little bit of meth." Okay, I got you, Dan. Anything for you.
Love how clean the $1 -> 100 math is
ive been waiting on this for YEARS
Love this, you guys rock!
My god just take my money already Dan
Sounds like a solid business model! All I ask is that the bundles of aether bucks are comparable to the price of these cosmetics.
For example, if skins cost 500 AB each, and a player wants just one skin, they should be able to buy 500 AB to get that skin. So this means the skin ends up effectively costing $5.
What do you think? Sounds good?
that's already how it works. skins are 10, you buy aetherbucks in 10 dollar increments
You can't imagine how hard my heart sunk reading the title of this video
Honestly, this is one of my favorite games of all time now, simply because of the monetization. So fair and un-greedy. Frankly, every game should be like this
A community so faithful they were asking to give you money
Can't wait for the game release!
Keep the skins coming!
honestly I think one of the most relieving things for me is that it appears that the premium skins are worth the exact amount of currency you can buy, so we're avoiding a SF6 situation where you're forced to pay more for a skin than its actually worth because of how they price the currency.
Thank you Daniel Furnace
Way more hype for this game than sparking zero by a long shot tbh love platform fighters
same, i've seen 20 minutes of gameplay and i already think i saw everything the game has to offer and got bored, but IM SO FREAKING HYPED FOR THIS GAME AAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
I am so excited to try out Fleet she looks like fun and might be my new main. Clairen was my main in 1 so I think Fleet might be my main in 2
a good platform fighter on pc my goat, ive always wanted to get into melee but cant, this game looks much cooler then melee tho love the artstyle and the gameplay looks like it would feel great to play
I cant wait for rivals of aether 2❤
THIS GAME GOT ME SO HYPED
No FOMO is incredible, THANK YOU!!!!
You guys should definitely make different character outros and maybe even intros as cosmetics. People really love those types of things
THAT WOULD BE SO HYPE
Making all battle pass rewards available should be mandated by law
dan wheres the fors moveset breakdown, the beta drops TOMORROW
Maaaaaan im SO hyped for this game
Cosmetics?? Heck yea
