in Alpharad's ORAS egglocke, Dan Fornace submitted a Sandshrew egg with a note saying something along the lines of "It just occurred to me that armadillos are my favorite animal, and we've yet to add one to Rivals" so I think that's a pretty big indicator for possible newcomers
Kinguin is technically not even a Creatures rep; he is a Rivals 1 rep. Back when the game only had 6 characters, people dug into the files and found WIP sprites for a penguin and a polar bear. The Rivals devs noticed this, and decided to do a little trolling. In the next patch, they updated the penguin's sprites but kept the polar bear's sprites the same, so it seemed like the penguin was going to be the next character and the polar bear got scrapped. And the rest is history.
speaking of slade, Im pretty damn convinced that the person speaking in Orcane's reveal trailer was him. If he already has a voice actor thats a huge plus for him
It's 100% Slade, in the Demo he's listed in the credits. In the release credits, he's suspiciously missing. Its likely someone jumped the gun but considering him in Orcane have the same VA, he's likely next
I know that a higher-profile indie game like Hollow Knight will draw more players, but a character from Freedom Planet or Sybil from Pseudoregalia would be perfect in Rivals. It would be cool to get one of the workshop characters in 2025, but it's hard to imagine them not prioritizing Absa and Etalus for the two returning fighters of year one. Hopefully the game gets enough support to port over all the Rivals 1 characters!
@@bluebubbee It's a short but highly-praised 3D Metroidvania. The way the player character interacts with her weapon and the environment just scream Rivals to me
@hypermoth Ironically enough I think of the four girls Neera is practically tailor made for Rivals seeing as she already has a Focus gimmick and ice spike traps stage control in her home game. Maybe she would have to differ from the Rivals 1 mod of her though because that shares Etalus' ice floor gimmick.
If they do have a guest character in the game which is already a Workshop character in the first game it will be interesting to see if the character is at all similar to that Workshop character
Next they’re gonna add my OC, foranglormin. He’s 4 anglerfish in a trench coat that disguise themselves as different animals. Whoever the next character is, it’s actually just foranglermin in disguise.
They could do a Creatures of Aether character similar to smash bros Pokémon trainer, that would be interesting and pretty unique compared to other Rivals characters
Mina would be basically perfect, she's from a company they already have a good relationship with, fits into rivals style seamlessly and unlike any other guest characters, could be classified under an element, since her burrowing would place her solidly as an earth character.
I think the Defect from Slay the Spire could be a really cool guest character. Fraymakers added the Watcher, so it doesn't *directly* step on their toes. He's a robot, so non-human which would fit the artstyle. Mechanically they could make it an Olimar-style fighter with the orbs gimmick, which we don't have in Rivals.
Pomme is also my number 1 choice, and part of it is because she's packing a unique archetype outside of just floater, she's also an "antizoner", or a character possessing elements that CAN be used from long range but are generally there more to force the opponent into close range, with my example of choice being Vince having projectile immunity and chucking enemies to Pomme. I think if they wanted to keep Vince but give her a new forward special, it might be interesting to have Vince act as a grab while retaining his anti-projectile property, and wherever he grabs the opponent is where he tosses them from, and for a special pummel he could probably put a mouse shaped pair of headphones on who he hits that causes her next sound attack to blast them towards her... and if they wanted to give pomme a Zair she could do an aerial maneuver that hucks Vince forward as a suppression tackle.
For the Creatures of Aether thing, it'd be kinda interesting (I'm just thinking randomly while watching the video) that maybe we can have like some hooded ambiguous character who has 4 different creatures, one for each element, kinda like Pokemon Trainer in Smash however they'd be the Rivals equivalent to them while also encompassing all 4 of the major elements of the universe. Though...that might be a lot of work maybe so i dunno. 😅
I think a more forward-looking Toby Fox character than Sans Undertale would be one of the Deltarune protagonists. Susie and Ralsei definitely fit the aesthetic, and I don't think Kris would stick out that much more than Shovel Knight did. I don't think any of them has a singularly unique moveset identity to pull from in their base game, but I think they could have a lot of personality as a PT-style 3-for-1 character, with specials that interact with each other like they do in Deltarune. Now I don't think that's likely in any way based on the Rivals team's current workload, but in general I'd just love to see the Rivals team's spin on a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 character, be it a crossover character or an original design (like identical twins with different elemental alignments or smth). There's so much more you could do with the concept than just "switch your character with Down Special!", especially with the new special options for pummels, ledges and get-up attacks.
I think Susie is probably my most wanted guest character but I'm honestly not sure if Toby Fox would be willing to put her in any crossovers. He's made it a point to not release any specific types of merch of the lightner characters from deltarune and I could see that extending to crossovers.
i dont know how much you've played dungeons, but i think your interpretation of Artemis is pretty mistaken. Her main gimmick in the game is taking damage and healing, she damages herself to use her strongest move and when played correctly can survive death blows by regenning. There could be a gimmick where certain attacks damage herself kinda like Pichu from smash, with some options for regaining % with high-commitment moves. As well as this, I don't think her weapon is so core to her character that it couldn't be changed - and even if they didn't it IS still a different weapon (halberd). The more important aspect is her rage and aggressiveness as well as her regenerative abilities, which could translate just fine into a unique character. However, she should probably still be a later pick since we've got loads of fire characters.
About Etalis have code for ice and a frozen state in move coding in rivals 2 demo. So ya, Etalis is basically confirmed for the next character. Edit: Also there is a listed 32 character slots in the code. I doubt thats the roster true size and is most likely remanence from a test for slots.
Outside of Absa or Etalus, I think an earth newcomer is likely, as I don't see Sylvanos coming back soon. So I do think that either Guadua, Hamir or Murr will be soon.
It's confirmed no 3rd party characters will be coming to rivals 2 for the foreseeable future and they will be completing the base roster first before anything, so its gonna be absa, etalus, sylvanos or elliana as the next character
Skylanders in Rivals 2 would be insane personally for guests. I've thought about reps and I think it'd be Stealth Elf, Tree Rex, Trigger Happy or Pop Fizz.
I loved La Reina and I’m hype she won, but Awatsu should’ve gotten in anyway. I absolutely loved the bubble mechanic and and the design was amazing (with how Orcane transferred to 2D, idk how it Awatsu would)
Having Sandbert be a sprite in Rivals 2 would be REALLY funny, but I also think him being designed after the hilarious plushie that got released would be funny too. Have you seen how tall that guy is? He's scary.
The kicktstarter for rivals 2 says that while they are not developing any guest characters, it is a long term goal. So there is a notable chance Shovel Knight and Ori could come back. Just not on release, of course.
If Artemis gets added she will inevitably have some overlap with Loxodont, which I think is fine given that it'd fit thematically with her serving under him, but I think a great core mechanic to make her unique would be to build off her Dungeons kit and have her play with self-damage. See attacks would deal some % to yourself to deal more damage or gain a new effect, while others would be hard to land but let you recover %. Maybe also give her some kind of anger install that builds up with damage taken? Something like a mix between Void Fiend from Risk of Rain 2 and Lady Geist from Deadlock.
Devs have said the 4 per year will be divided into 2 returning characters, 1 expanded universe charcter, 1 new, Absa and Etalus will definitely the first returning characters. Slade is likely the EU rep. then a new character (possibly Envy, an Abyss rep) My guess is that Pomme and Mollo will be added together as a future-themed expansion since they're both from the future, and my hope is that the other two from that set will be for Earth and Water to even it out. HARD AGREE on guests being animals. If we're going with how they've detailed dlc characters will be divided, we'll have an assured 4 years of new characters coming (because 8 of the returning cast is pending). Maybe the 5th year will be four guests, in which case my choices are: - Ori (he just fits) - Mina the Hollower (new Yacht club rep) - The Knight/Vessel or Hornet - Afi & Galu from Rushdown Revolt
My main was Absa, my secondary was Sylvano. Patiently waiting... Can't decide if I want to just play random for now, or try Orcane. Orcane always seemed super cool to me, but was a little daunting to play when I already had a definite main.
Slade could have a Shovel Knight inspired mechanic with different moves. Amir would have to separate himself from Krag. Dirt (Earth) could be his element. He could make earthquakes and fling dirt with his attacks- Incidentally or purposefully. Artemis could be a weapons master, switching between exactly three different weapons. She could use the sword, spear, and axe- Straight up the weapon trilogy of Fire Emblem. A character named Artemis should probably be using a bow, so she could use a different set of weapons or use a bow in her move sets.
One more important factor to keep in account is that the Rivals characters are based off of the four natural elements that we see in things like Airbender; it would be important to categorize and logically see an even amount of characters for each.
Honestly i would love if we even got some of the Rivals 1 Workshop favorites that didnt get in with the workshop 4 Ive always loved Iroh and have been wanting him to be a canon character for like, forever A stance change Rivals take on a Shoto would be such a fun idea
I really hope if there is a 3rd party character, it's Pizza from Chicory! She'd be so fun with all the cool things you could do with the paint brush mechanic.
I hope all of them eventually join the roster! I'm excited for the workshop 5, yes 5 because guadua should be regarded as one of them! and of course the remaining roster rivals from the first game, especially eliana. reina also looks very awesome and I hope slate makes it into rivals 2. insane how I like every single character in this verse. idk if I can say that for any other game
A bit late, BUT, all 3 Dungeons characters could make it over the next 3 years (1 per year along with another newcomer and 2 vets) and they CAN all be unique. Slade - Speed and dodge gimmick. Speedy swordfighter, using his tail and the sword, and a dodge/evade move that could be high risk high reward. Hamir - Shifting defense gimmick. Basically, a way to trick the opponent into becoming "combo food" only to turn it around with super armor offense at the right moment. Artemis - High risk high reward power that hurts her, and a way to heal a bit (the healing being limited of course). Super aggressive and reckless playstyle basically. Those are the basic ideas just based on what they do, but yeah. They plan on adding all the vets, so if they do 2 per year with 2 newcomers, we could see like 4 years of support to bring everyone back, add everyone from Dungeons, and even leave room for stuff like Guadua, the big eagle dude, etc. and the OCs they make. Heck, they can round the roster to 30 and do year 5 with a guest and whatever as a nice little bow to wrap things up as "the definitive version".
My crossover pick couldn’t be anyone but one of the slugcats from rainworld, and I think theyd have like an item play gimmick where they can pick up stuff that appears on stage to use for creative combos and pressure.
I have to say I was quite confused by a lot of what you were talking about. I was a casual player of Rivals 1 for a while, so I know about the base roster, Etalus, and Clairen. Everything else, I either had a vague idea from seeing a few times or just had no idea what you were talking about. In the future I think it will be good to explain the characters for those who are uninitiated.
The Beheaded from Dead Cells would be amazing, his huge arsenal of weapons and traps would make him a character with a variety of mixups and potential. Give him the insect claws for his side charge attacks, down special could be the bear trap or blade trap. Down air would be his rune add on, up special his vine, neutral special his flint hammer. Hell give him mushroom boi as a deployable. He’s an icon for roguelikes and would be a great addition to Rivals.
In my opinion the fist workshop 4 that will comeback first is Olympia. My fav earth character is Sylvan is, but I think by how her design is, and how popular she is (the most popular of the workshop 4, probably along with Hodan) would make her appear way sooner than any other character, and is my bet for the first post realize Rivals 2 character.
18:10 Olympia is blatantly inspired by my favorite street fighter character ever, which is Makoto from SF3 3rd strike Makoto may look like a shoto at first glance but she absolutely isn't, neither mechanically or thematically, so your confusion regarding Olympia makes total sense Personally Olympia's my favorite Rivals character and I got no main in Rivals 2 so in my oh so biased eyes her return is a necessity, the sooner the better
I think Krill from Another Crab's Treasure has a really good shot at being a guest character since he fits the animal thematic and Aggro Crab Studios has worked with Aether Studios before on the last Rivals Direct
First and foremost I'd really like Etalus and Sylvanos. I like these characters a lot and Water and Earth are each one character away from having their entire OG 12 representation in the game alongside Fire currently having it. I also think Orcane being done and also quadrupedal like both of them that that hurdle is somewhat manageable for the team now and maybe even some of that work on Orcane can be be a sort of headstart towards their development. Just rationalizing my hopes. here.
I hope Ori gets added in. I know the devs said they don't have plans for it, but I think that was just because any plans for that sorta thing would come later. Ori fits the Rivals 2 art style MUCH more than Rivals 1 too, and I think Microsoft *has* done a crossover with Ori since WotW released? So it might not be impossible even with the series being unlikely to continue?
Personally, if there is indie rep in the game, i would really like Sash Lilac from The Freedom Planet franchise to be in. If not her i can see any of the 4 playable character from freedom planet 2 work very well for RoA2 but i think Mila in particular has a very "RoA like mechanic" already with her green energy cube.
making the dragon girl unique would be so easy, she can fight more like a staff/spear/poleaxe user rather than battle axe like lox does.he really only has two moves that utilize his reach: fair and ftilt 2. she can be extremely unique and use more sephiroth distance
Hear me out for the third party character. Ember knight (from ember knights), it's a small indie roguelike and I think their design in rivals could be fire (no pun intended)
Tbh there is a lot good opinions i also agreed with ponme (i think u forgot how to pronounce her) another character i will add hit me or not imagine getting orcane's brothers yk the tear of anger and sorrow fro. The orcane rivals 2 trailer reveal
We do know how many new characters & veterans there will be, and how often they'll be added. Every RoA1 character will return eventually (except Ori/SK). They're planning on adding 4 characters per year. 50% returning veterans from RoA1, 25% new characters from an existing Aether IP (i.e. Dungeons [like Fleet], Creatures, Rivals [like Loxodont]), 25% completely new and original characters. They said keeping the elements balanced was not going to be taken into account, but they've since changed their minds and will now at least not let them get too lopsided like right now. Mollo is probably not going to be coming soon because of his divisiveness, probably late-game. This means we'll get 2 vets per year until the remaining 8 are in, so this pattern will probably continue for 4 years until 2029. 8 returning from RoA1, 4 from existing IP, & 4 completely new. If La Reina is considered "existing IP" that means the only known new characters we'll get will be from Dungeons; but if she's considered completely new, then we're guaranteed 1 character from an existing IP that isn't a main character from Dungeons; but there will probably be a year where we won't get a never-befor-seen character (either 2026 or 2027). Based off of all of this, I'm thinking our most likely FIRST DLC character is probably 100% original, and we'll probably get either Absa, Etalus, or Olympia as our first 2 DLC veterans next year. Or maybe Absa is first and the original character is second; one or the other, I think. We probably won't get BOTH Etalus & Hamir in the same year, but double water could happen if they're not back to back, I'm assuming from their updated comments about the element balance. My guess for 2025 (in no particular order) is either: Absa, Olympia, Slade, & a big-body air-user; or Absa, Olympia, Hamir, & a light-weight water-user; or Absa, Etalus, a medium-weight earth user, & Slade; or Absa, Etalus, a medium-weight earth user, & Artemis. I don't see any timeline where we don't get Absa next year; and I think she's probably going to be either the 11th or 12th character. Actually, now that I think about it, I could see Absa coming in January-February, and then the first 100% original character being shown off in an April 1st direct and then dropping right after. Yeah, let's go with that, I like that idea.
I would love to see Cuphead, He genuinely has so much potential in a platform fighter, his moves could be a bunch of cartoony slapstick, with different projectiles sounds like a cool character Then theres an absolute pipe dream and somewhat joke character in the form of Turnip Boy from Turnip Boy commits tax evasion, yeah i know its weird but it can work, there are a lot of weapons Turnip Boy uses in just the sequel Turnip Boy robs a bank. And in rivals 1 theres a mod for the turnip only based on the first game and it still works well for a moveset, i doubt its gonna happen but i would love it
Mina and Hornet would be *P E R F E C T*. They fit the style and concept already, and they'd both be great at co-promoting with two different long-awaited followups to top-tier indie games. I want it so bad, the only problem is that we already have TWO mouse girls on the way so 3 might be a crowd... but still! Also, while an Undertale character would be amazing, Deltarune for more co-promotion would be more likely; Undyne would be perfect, but maybe Susie, Ralsei or Noelle would work... Just hard to imagine Susie not being yet another fire-based axe-wielder lol
Monarch is one of the most fun characters I've ever played, but he wasn't submitted for any of the workshop contests. Nonetheless, I really hope he's added to Rivals 2. Zerra is the same case (just not quite as cool or fun), but I'd be happy to see either of them.
9:13 if an Undertale/Deltarune rep got added to Rivals, I’d put my money more on someone like Undyne, Susie, Noelle, or maybe even someone from the next few Deltarune chapters. Noelle is even already on Rivals 1’s Workshop as a frame of reference for what she can do!
they've recently specified that la reina is year 2, with each year having 2 vets, 1 newcomer that exists in the roa1 universe and 1 newcomer that is entirely new never before seen
If they make 4 characters a year and they’ve confirmed there will be at least 20 total characters then I think this game will get 3-4 years of support meaning a final roster size of anywhere from 20-24 characters. I think they will probably go above 20 but not above 24
@@kylenayolfa4562 I think items would be super fun! So many platfighters make content around exclusively competitive play and just leave casual play to be forgotten. Sometimes I just wanna turn on items and have some chaotic fun lol
If guest characters will be considered, it would be funny if Shantae is brought to rivals 2 long after people have been begging for her to be added to smash bros
I'd love to see some guest characters. I'd also much prefer them to be characters new to the platform fighter genre, instead of adding guests from Slap City or whatever. That's something that made the Fraymakers roster kind of unappealing to me, one third of the roster being platform fighting characters that I can already play in other, well made platform fighters.

My guess is that Pomme and Mollo will be added together as a future-themed expansion since they're both from the future, and my hope is that the other two from that set will be for Earth and Water to even it out.
HARD AGREE on guests being animals. If we're going with how they've detailed dlc characters will be divided, we'll have an assured 4 years of new characters coming (because 8 of the returning cast is pending). Maybe the 5th year will be four guests, in which case my choices are:
- Ori (he just fits)
- Mina the Hollower (new Yacht club rep)
- The Knight/Vessel or Hornet
- Afi & Galu from Rushdown Revolt
I hope every characters form rivals 1 get added as long as others. I list love the og cast that much
Guadua has an icon in the bucks shop, so she already is technically in the game. I think she could come officially finally.
I would really like to see yono return honestly. He’s just got such a fun character design
I really want to see the Necromancer from Dungeons of Aether.
What’s the name again?
Honestly i would love if we even got some of the Rivals 1 Workshop favorites that didnt get in with the workshop 4
Ive always loved Iroh and have been wanting him to be a canon character for like, forever
A stance change Rivals take on a Shoto would be such a fun idea
Brutice from Creatures of Aether looks incredible. I hope he joins the roster at some point.
8:35 The Lamb from Cult of the Lamb
In my opinion the fist workshop 4 that will comeback first is Olympia. My fav earth character is Sylvan is, but I think by how her design is, and how popular she is (the most popular of the workshop 4, probably along with Hodan) would make her appear way sooner than any other character, and is my bet for the first post realize Rivals 2 character.
I really home shovel Knight comes back I loved his move set so much
im pretty sure they confirmed that there arent going to add the guest characters back
But there will be brand new ones in the second game instead.
I really want Absa to return!!
18:10 Olympia is blatantly inspired by my favorite street fighter character ever, which is Makoto from SF3 3rd strike
Makoto may look like a shoto at first glance but she absolutely isn't, neither mechanically or thematically, so your confusion regarding Olympia makes total sense
Personally Olympia's my favorite Rivals character and I got no main in Rivals 2 so in my oh so biased eyes her return is a necessity, the sooner the better
Just to clarify they say Ori will come but not now so is a optional pick ..
Niko from Oneshot is my dream pick for a guest character. He says hes not a cat but i dont believe it
Olympia was my personal main, so i'm honestly just waiting for her to come back
Kril from “Another Crab’s Treasure” is my top pick for a guest character
BHADRA MY GOAT (i love this char, i was so sad that only one character from workshop was chosen, Awatsu and Bhadra were so much fun)
I think Krill from Another Crab's Treasure has a really good shot at being a guest character since he fits the animal thematic and Aggro Crab Studios has worked with Aether Studios before on the last Rivals Direct
whoever designed houdan is a genius. A water type with steam/vapor/mist. Who is an artic animal with a towel
For guests, I'd personally want Krill from Another Crab's Treasure!
Hear me out for the third party character.
Ember knight (from ember knights), it's a small indie roguelike and I think their design in rivals could be fire (no pun intended)
Guadua has an emote in rivals 2, so they know she exists and thats really awesome i think :)
I hate that you planted the idea in my head of Hornet being a possible character in this game. Now that's all I want... Lol
Tbh there is a lot good opinions i also agreed with ponme (i think u forgot how to pronounce her) another character i will add hit me or not imagine getting orcane's brothers yk the tear of anger and sorrow fro. The orcane rivals 2 trailer reveal
Ahh, another believer in the pomme🙏 Anyway its confirmed all 4 are coming
I sure hope we get the original characters before new ones LMAO. We are missing so many
We do know how many new characters & veterans there will be, and how often they'll be added.
My guess for 2025 (in no particular order) is either:
Absa, Olympia, Slade, & a big-body air-user; or
Absa, Olympia, Hamir, & a light-weight water-user; or
Absa, Etalus, a medium-weight earth user, & Slade; or
Absa, Etalus, a medium-weight earth user, & Artemis.
I would love to see Cuphead, He genuinely has so much potential in a platform fighter, his moves could be a bunch of cartoony slapstick, with different projectiles sounds like a cool character
Then theres an absolute pipe dream and somewhat joke character in the form of Turnip Boy from Turnip Boy commits tax evasion, yeah i know its weird but it can work, there are a lot of weapons Turnip Boy uses in just the sequel Turnip Boy robs a bank. And in rivals 1 theres a mod for the turnip only based on the first game and it still works well for a moveset, i doubt its gonna happen but i would love it
Olympia is the most underrated character in rivals its sad cause shes the only character i like in the roster
I want a void character, I think the final boss of dungeons of aether could be a cool character
What? Where they said It? 😱
@@EddyManfredini search up Rivals 2 Deep Dive Q&A, it’s about 2 weeks old now
the Rivals of Aether devs are probably the only group that I would trust to do Sans justice in a platformer
If they make 4 characters a year and they’ve confirmed there will be at least 20 total characters then I think this game will get 3-4 years of support meaning a final roster size of anywhere from 20-24 characters. I think they will probably go above 20 but not above 24
I dont see a lot of people mention them but id really love to see the workshop character N/A
Seconded!
I unironically hope they add items for casual play so if they could do that with the addition of Mollo that would be a sick update
@@kylenayolfa4562 I think items would be super fun! So many platfighters make content around exclusively competitive play and just leave casual play to be forgotten. Sometimes I just wanna turn on items and have some chaotic fun lol
The dream (and impossible) guest character would be Pikachu.
we need fishbunjin
If guest characters will be considered, it would be funny if Shantae is brought to rivals 2 long after people have been begging for her to be added to smash bros
Please, Pomme is my fav pic too :'D I can be patient but god i need her eventually
I'd love to see some guest characters. I'd also much prefer them to be characters new to the platform fighter genre, instead of adding guests from Slap City or whatever. That's something that made the Fraymakers roster kind of unappealing to me, one third of the roster being platform fighting characters that I can already play in other, well made platform fighters.
hear me out spyro as a guest character would be so crazy as an wind element character
15-20 for la reina is ao wild and means were gonna get a sizable cast wow
If john dead cells gets added then my life is your rivals 2
I have some good news, slade is in the credits.
