  • Hey there everybody! Sony recently released their newest vlog centric camera the ZV-E1. This release was met with a lot of positive attention by content creators on social media. I have a slightly different opinion of this camera.
    Main camera: iPhone 13 Mini
Main microphone: SmallRig W60 Wireless Microphone
Editing software: Filmora 12 along with Camo Studio

agree with this video wholeheartedly! there is no place in the lineup for this camera at the price it's at. you made a great point toward the beginning about who this is for. every aspiring content creator i've met that asks me how to get into it... they know nothing about cameras or lenses. whole point of a tool for content creators is making it an all in one deal. the original ZV-1 was (and still is) great for this. i have no idea why they didn't just throw a bigger sensor into the original ZV-1 and update it for the future. the average content creator doesn't need this much horsepower... and when looking at this camera, the FX30 is such a better buy. it is priced amazingly, has a proper body and other functions that will suit you in professional environments also if you want to do client work or filmmaking. and if you absolutely need full frame, get an A7IV for a couple extra hundred bucks and have a truly capable content creation tool that is excellent for photos also.
great points about the influencers as well. it has become a real problem on youtube. they are not in touch with day to day average creators who dont get to try out every newest toy that comes out. often times the gear is just shipped to them for free no strings attached as well. it gets to the point where there are too many external factors influencing their content and making it less relatable. keep the thoughts coming! great stuff

Yeah I think there was only really DP review that were quite harsh on it. They wrapped it up on some positives but the tone was there. The image quality is beautiful. There’s a reason the FX3 is Netflix approved. Each to their own but it’s the best looking (filmic) image for me. I love it. I’ve just sent my A7iii off for store credit and I’m split between a pre-order on the Zv-e1 and a used A7IV which is £200 cheaper. Hands down better build quality on the A7iv. Ain’t nobody arguing that. And a fantastic business promotion tool and content creation machine. It’s a bit like an IPhone Pro Max. It does everything really quite well. Solid.
The ZV-E1 excels in image quality, ease of use and has some great built-in looks and autofocus. The new stabilisation is still quite cropped in and, on a big screen, does actually affect the image quality quite a bit. For me, I’d be wanting to get an FX3 in a year or so, so…it really comes down to resale value and what will serve my needs best for the next year. I suppose we can’t really argue with the amount of choices available haha 😅

I think you make some good points in this video. Your points about focusing on creating and not chasing the latest and greatest gear were spot on. However, there were a lot of points I disagree with as well.
There seems to be this assumption in every video detracting from thr ZV-E1 that "content creators" and "youtubers" are broke teenagers who have never picked up a camera in their life, now all of a sudden Sony is marketing a $2200 specced out beast to them and they're the only ones that are allowed to use it. That's not at all the case with the ZV-E1. That was who the ZV-E10 was made for. IMO, the ZV-E1 is a purpose built camera that is a bit more niche than what people are giving it credit for. It's definitely not made for people who don't know how to use a camera, but it's more made for those with a working knowledge of videography and content creation who want to take their solo content creation to the next level while using a small, light camera that won't break the bank. People just like me. I'm a camera, and especially Sony veteran. Just in Sony, I have owned the RX100V, a6500, and A9, and I currently own the HX90V, ZV1, A7RIV, and A1, and I pre-ordered the ZV-E1 a few days ago. I think this camera is an almost perfect camera for me. I make hiking and outdoor videos, so size and weight really matter when packing out my bag. The ZV1 is great, but the 24mm lens is too narrow, but worse than anything else is the battery life. The A1 is incredible, but there is no way to see yourself to expose, and it's a bit heavy when trying to keep the weight down. The ZV-E1 is actually a perfect mix of the two IMO. Small size and incredible specs.
I found it a little bit odd that you said the specs and features of the ZV-E1 are "overkill" and there is "no place for them". I wholeheartedly disagree. You may not have a want or need for the new features, but you're obviously not buying this camera. I think the AI subject tracking using clear image zoom is genius, and will be amazing for a solo creator like myself out in the field. The new digital stabilization will also be great, since I don't really want to have to pack a gimbal like I have to with the A1 and ZV1.
You brought up in your video how you prefer a specific action camera over another because of its size and ease of use. That's exactly why I pre-ordered the ZV-E1. Because it fits a size and specs need that my none of my other cameras can match. I also think the price isn't bad for what you're getting. You're getting an FX3 in a smaller plastic body for almost half the price. That seems pretty good to me. Would I have preferred it to be under $2000? Of course, but I don't think the cost is too high.
Lastly, I'm not blinded to the fact that this won't be the end all be all camera out there. It isn't weather sealed (which is my biggest gripe at this price), and there may be some overheating to deal with at 4K. Those are things I can deal with. I take really good care of my gear, so the plastic body and weather sealing isn't the biggest deal. I've had a ZV1 since release and it looks almost brand new. I don't even take my A1 out in the rain without a cover. But, all in all, I'm excited about the ZV-E1, and can't wait until release.

imo it's a failed product. i'm surprised of how most of the big photo gear channels i watch are like trying to brainwash people into thinking zv-e1 is something to buy. it's annoying seeing them do that. it's quite hard finding material on youtube that dont actually applaud zv-e1. frustrating situation sony has made with how they, in my view, sponsored (directly or indirectly, financially or otherwise) big influencers. i think those influencers have work to do in order to restore their credibility after how they pushed this camera.

The camera hasn't even been released yet, and you're already sure it's a failed product and will destroy the credibility of all who gave it a positive review? 😂 Wow. So Gerald Undone is trying to brain wash people by sharing his scientific testing data on the camera?
