I appreciate that you mentioned the advertising campaign for this movie. Similar to "Nobody talks about Fight Club", I think the marketing is part of what made this movie such a phenomenon.
From what I heard, Keanu injured his neck and THEN his fight style was created around that. The fact that he didn't have a lot of flexibility led to his very straight-forward fighting style (little-to-no dips, bobs or weaves, loads of straight power punches and kicks, very few feints, etc). A great example of an actor's limitations leading to an amazingly visceral and thematic fight style.
Good video. Here are a few things about "The Matrix." The window washers are the Wachowskis. Good catch about "Cypher" meaning "zero," but since Neo represented Christ in the movie, I thought "Cypher" was a shortened "Lucifer." In the matrix, Smith referred to Cypher as "Reagan," an actor later elected president. One of the funniest things in the movie was when Neo was literally fighting Smith with one hand behind his back which is a colloquialism for an easy fight. Excuse any repeats. I typed this as I was watching.
@@heavyspoilersit was amazing! Also, this was the first movie I bought on DVD as well. I preordered it before I even owned a DVD player. I bought a DVD player the same day I picked up the movie. Can't wait for Reloaded!
I saw the Matrix opening night in the movie theater!!! Blew my mind so wide open I had to watch it 3 more times. The Matrix is still my go to movie when I want to watch something.
Another subliminal message is in the end credits, with Rage Against the Machine’s song title. Wake up. Bad ass ending when Neo does his superman thing. The matrix is so amazing, multi-complex and easy to understand at the same time! Thanks Paul for the analysis.
Some stuff about Neo's name that often gets missed: Neo's full name (with moniker) is Thomas A. "Neo" Anderson. As mentioned in the video, "Anderson" means "son of man", and "Neo" is an anagram of "one". However not mentioned is that the name "Neo" also means "new", "recent", "revived". Therefore "Neo" and "Anderson" put together could be meant to imply that he is "the new son of man" or "the revived son of man", alluding to the Second Coming of Christ. Similarly the name "Thomas" means "twin" or "someone who looks like another", so "Thomas Anderson" means "the twin of the son of man". Normally this could be interpreted as his name meaning "one who is fashioned in the image of Christ", but in this case it is likely further alluding to the idea that he is the second coming of the messiah. Incidentally, his middle name is never given throughout the franchise.
@@SuperSuperman1976 Thanks friend. I was thinking about it more and there's more ways that you can interpret his name when you consider the lore perspective. We know from the sequels that the Matrix runs on a cycle, wherein the Matrix goes online, eventually a human "wakes up", that messianic figure then founds a human settlement somewhere below the Earth's crust and wages a war against the machines, a second messianic figure arises and destabilizes the Matrix, and then the machines tear the whole thing down and start over. From this perspective we can infer that Neo is not the Second Coming of Christ, but is in fact the "second coming" of the first awakened human in a particular cycle. It gives his name a bit of a double triple quadruple whatever meaning.
The Thomas part of his name is to represent Doubting Thomas. Neo struggles with the doubt of being The One, and it makes the scene where Smith calls him Mr. Anderson and he says emphatically that his name is Neo, possibly signifying that he's beginning to shed that doubt.
I think Thomas in this context could have more meaning also, as Thomas was the 12th deciple of jesus. Famous for doubting jesus resurrection. Thomas Could refer to the inital self doubt he feels that he is Neo.
I so appreciate these responses to the best movie ever. I love to agree and find out how much fun behind the scenes people add that I remember and recognize. This walkthrough is beautiful.
20:20 Laurence fishburne was the only cast member who completed the book but understood the book to the point where it even impressed the directors. I learned that from the TH-cam channel fact fiend.
@@anubusx It's quite a specific subject matter for anyone to just simply Google whether or not everybody actually understood the book that the directors had them read. I just so happened to watch something that spoke about Laurence fishburne reading the book entirely, and I'm sure that there are a few others that covered it but yeah.
The bunny movie is "Night of the Lepus"...killer bunnies. Awesome flick...I mean, it's absolutely terrible, but also glorious. Dude, it's a bunch of bunnies "rampaging" around a miniature town...it's amazingly awesome.
I’ll never forget walking into the theaters late and seeing Trinity do her famous dive into the window and landing guns out!!! I knew I was in for a ride, then seeing the Phantom Menace and realizing the Matrix was the new Star Wars.
One of the most interesting lines from Cypher is when he stated his desire to be "someone important, like an actor" when he'll be reinserted in the Matrix. The fact that he considers one of the least important role in society to be someone important is very intriguing. I've always wondered what was the meaning of that line.

I randomly saw this at my local discount/double feature theatre. Didnt know anything about it, and i dont even remember what movie (the one i wanted to see) was the first one. I was ready to leave until that opening scene 🤯. I also remember talking about it to my parents for prolly weeks on end. I made my dad go see it two days later. Oh, and I LOVE the soundtrack.
@@heavyspoilers For sure. I miss discovering amazing movies. The Internet has taken this away. I also saw The Fifth Element randomly, girl at the theater just said "Bruce Willis action movie," I was twelve and said yep. Now it's one of my favorite movies. Well done. I probably saw 3 or 4 deep dives on the Matrix and this was still entertaining and illuminating. Or maybe I'm just stuck in a loop of watching youtube essays on the same topics... ... but jokes on the machines! I pay youtube premium so get no ads, and even skip the in-video ads.

46:35 - Also in Cipher's explanation of the screens of code, we hear him say a line completely wrong! Neo asks if he always looks at the Matrix as code. Cipher says that you have to. "The image translators work *for* the Construct Program; but there's too much information in the Matrix." By putting the emPHAsis on the wrong sylLABle, the line fails. He should have said, "The image translators work for the CONstruct Program, but..." In other words, they work for *this,* but they can't work for that.
Humanity's hubris is amazing. You can make movies showing you why AI can be a very bad thing, yet we do all we can to get there, believing we can control it, which goes against the idea of true AI. It's like a self-fulfilling prophesy/paradox or something.
Reinhardt, the surname of Neo's boss, also derives from the Germanic words _ragin_ meaning "counsel" and _hart_ meaning "strong", literally "strong counsel" or "good advice". His boss did indeed give him some good advice: make a choice.
Nokia’s biggest plunder during that time was not making enough of those phones. As a teen, myself and all those around me wanted one but could not find them anywhere. Was the coolest gimmick for a cell phone at the time.
53:59 I also think it is possible that the Oracle put somethin in the cookie she gave to Neo to eat. As in the later movie has shown by merovingian that, it's possible to code into food that effect people who ate it. That cookie might be the thing that kick start Neo transformation, or may be even gave some power to him
Your reviews/breakdowns are incredible. I love that you’ve gone back and done this and the godfather etc. incredible work. Must take ages to do the research. I salute you
Back in the day me and a couple friends of mine, we were obsessed with The Matrix movies, especially the first 2. After we saw the second movie we started talking about different Theories about what was really happening. We theorized that the reason Agent Smith was able to take over the guy and Neo was able to stop the machines in the “real world “ was that the real world was actually a secondary Matrix made to let people that slipped out of the main program to believe they were free. We also theorized that the Matrix was built by an alliance of humans and machines as a way to allow humans to survive until the world could support life again. Like maybe near the end of the world the machines feeling pity agreed with the humans to end the war and create the Matrix as a way to save humanity. But over time the system became corrupted or the original purpose was lost.
You earned my subscription today. This is a masterclass in movie breakdowns. The Matrix is easily in my top 3 favorite movies of all time and I have seen A LOT of movies. I thought I knew all the little easter eggs and foreshadowing in this movie until today. Bravo sir Bravo.

I was just talking about The Matrix at work yesterday. Then we get a break down of the movie today. I was going around the office saying "Mr. Anderson." LOL
56:50 I've always thought that this shot was the most unique in the whole movie in terms of composition. The color pallet is off the charts. Nowhere else do we see such warm colors as when she exits the sewer. Yet no one ever picks up on it. Love that shot for some reason. Not sure it has meaning, I just like its esthetics.
I would just like to say I re-watch the Animatrix every year and it's so underrated. Also, the latest Matrix movie was such a shame. They were perfectly setup to do something revolving around VR and they goofed for some frame rate skip nonsense
Yeah Animatrix is the only actual good anime tie in I feel. The stuff they did for the dark knight was solid but Animatrix was head and shoulders above it.
@14:11 I remember how groundbreaking the cinematography was at the time when the Matrix was released. I feel like every decade or so there's a movie that comes out that forces all others to catch up to it and The Matrix was that movie. I love that you mentioned the other movies that were influenced by "bullet time" right after. I remember clearly the very next movie to come out using the same tech was Charlies Angels: Full Throttle, those directors were super influenced by the Matrix I remember it being panned as a Matrix ripoff. Anyway I love this video and am looking forward to more content like this! I've no joke watched The Matrix over 60 times since VHS release and still discover new things, this video pointed out things I had never realized before.
Man i just love you voice and accent! As a non native english speaker i am struggling tho, can't figure out if it's aussie or actually from somewhere in the uk??
@@FreeFinca Thanks for that! I reside in London and I do want to say it’s more of a UK accent since he doesn’t “round” his vowels as they do in AU, and there is plenty of Aussies in London so I got an ear to that now too. I also was thinking maybe somewhere up North, but then Geordie is quite distinguishable, at least for me, and he doesn’t do really sound that to me. He might have got his accent diluted which is always the reason no 1 for people struggling to guess. The more I listen to him the more he sounds like my colleges from Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool.
11:55 Small bit of trivia: Hugo Weaving developed Smith's montone, deep voice by micking The Wachoskis lol. He said during filming it was a personal joke of his to see how long it would take for them to realize he was impersonating them. If you listen to OLD videos of them talking, you'd hear both of their voice were incredibly deep and they often took miniscule pauses to add weight behind their words and spoke very carefully. Lilly(then Larry) mostly so. They don't have many interviews of them talking back then but it was featured on "The Matrix Revisted" dvd behind the scenes when they broke down their many inspirations.
The Matrix and Phantom Menance came out around the same time in the UK. I remember going to see Phantom Menace and leaving so depressed and disappointed. The following week I saw the Matrix. Complete opposite feeling!!
46:50 ciphers green shirt being in the program like Morpheus tie. But the scene before it's just a green shirt, but it has stripes. A subtle clue he longed to go back? and the thunder strike just before Morpheus asks about if "Neo ever had any dreams...." "Thunder" made the best cover of "In A Broken Dream".. great song
The matrix inspired me to write a fanfic where I combine the characters and timeline of both Ghost in the Shell and Akira where the characters join together to fight against a declining future and an external threat. Where Motoko is very much like trinity and Tetsuo has learned to control his rage and returns like a Neo type being.

Most of the crew members names in the triology are names of computer parts and computer related, either hardware or software, like Link, Switch, Mouse, Cipher, Apoc(same sound as EPOCH a software term) and so on. 2. Neo's door no. 101 is reference to the 101 status code is a transitional response that signals the server's willingness to switch to a different application-level protocol. 3. Another subliminal message is in the end credits, with Rage Against the Machine’s song title. Wake up. Bad ass ending when Neo does his superman thing. The matrix is so amazing, multi-complex and easy to understand at the same time! Thanks Paul for the analysis.
We love these hour plus breakdowns they’re appreciated
Thank you
Some stuff about Neo's name that often gets missed:
Neo's full name (with moniker) is Thomas A.
That's one hell of a break down.
The A stands for Alfred
Everyone else googled it.
@@anubusx It's quite a specific subject matter for anyone to just simply Google whether or not everybody actually understood the book that the directors had them read. I just so happened to watch something that spoke about Laurence fishburne reading the book entirely, and I'm sure that there are a few others that covered it but yeah.
@@anubusxprobably was Ask Jeeves back then 😂
The bunny movie is "Night of the Lepus"...killer bunnies. Awesome flick...I mean, it's absolutely terrible, but also glorious. Dude, it's a bunch of bunnies "rampaging" around a miniature town...it's amazingly awesome.
This movie freaked me out as a kid. But everything did.
I’ll never forget walking into the theaters late and seeing Trinity do her famous dive into the window and landing guns out!!! I knew I was in for a ride, then seeing the Phantom Menace and realizing the Matrix was the new Star Wars.
exactly correct, the Matrix was the new Star Wars, and in ways you may not even understand :-)
One of the most interesting lines from Cypher is when he stated his desire to be "someone important, like an actor" when he'll be reinserted in the Matrix. The fact that he considers one of the least important role in society to be someone important is very intriguing. I've always wondered what was the meaning of that line.
'it's a banger'... One of the most underrated prodigy beats in there as well, the entire soundtrack is Leftfield perfection 🤤🤤
Hi! What a fantastic channel I’ve only just stumbled across. I. AM. HOOKED! The videos are so engrossing, and they make me want to go back to watch films from my teens and early 20s that I haven’t seen for years. Thank you so much for producing these videos!
Bravo, great job on these Easter Eggs. Some of them were new to me despite watching dozens of times. Take that Ryan Arey!
Cheers man, shoutouts Agent Arey as well
Could you PLEASE breakdown Predestination, oh & the prestige & maybe project almanac. Love ur work keep it up 👍🏻
prestige is on the channel but i'll give the others a watch, thank you man
Nice touch having green and blue lighting in the background.
...while he sits in the red chair 😉
Fantastic presentation. Also my first dvd. Also hooked by that song (Clubbed to Death). I’m afraid I have to subscribe to see what else you’ve done. Cheers.
Yeah it’s defs one of those movies I wish I could watch for the first time again
@@heavyspoilers For sure. I miss discovering amazing movies. The Internet has taken this away. I also saw The Fifth Element randomly, girl at the theater just said "Bruce Willis action movie," I was twelve and said yep. Now it's one of my favorite movies. I'd love to see you do a breakdown of that one.
Watching a video about a movie almost the same length as the movie instead of rewatching the movie is awesome 😅
Barely an inconvenience
that's quite a mouthful, well said!

I've been waiting for this since I saw your channel for the first time! Thank you!
Ey cheers mate, hope it was worth the wait
19:41 - His name is pronounced “Bo-dreeyard”, with the final d being almost silent.
No shade. Just for future reference.
Cypher can also mean "Nothing". A difference between "Thomas" and "Cypher" is that one doubts, but the other believes in absolutely "nothing".
Ubi dubium ibi libertas
Where there is doubt, there is freedom
I'd love to see you guys do a deep dive into Jacob's Ladder, there's some seriously weird stuff going on in that movie that I'd love explained haha.
Jacob's ladder inspired the creation of the Silent Hill franchise.
Swear every year learn something new about this incredible movie. Outstanding vid on vid thanks and you all are appreciated!! Make me a better me. 😊
I was 15 when this movie came out. It was the first DVD I ever bought.. in fact, I bought a DVD drive for my computer specifically for this film. I memorized EVERY line of dialogue start to finish, and would recite it to my friends. And yet, I still learned new stuff in your video. You're the one.
I dont believe you
46:35 - Also in Cipher's explanation of the screens of code, we hear him say a line completely wrong! Neo asks if he always looks at the Matrix as code. Cipher says that you have to. "The image translators work *for* the Construct Program; but there's too much information in the Matrix."
By putting the emPHAsis on the wrong sylLABle, the line fails. He should have said, "The image translators work for the CONstruct Program, but..." In other words, they work for *this,* but they can't work for that.
Can't wait for the three or four hour video with of all the movies, my new favorite thing to look forward to.
Hahah have to George Lucas them and repackage the videos you’ve already seen
He's right Paul, the ultimate breakdowns are perfect for trips n such.

Excellent video! Can you please list the books and movies you referenced? I want to add them to my reading and watching list.
Thank you!
Humanity's hubris is amazing. You can make movies showing you why AI can be a very bad thing, yet we do all we can to get there, believing we can control it, which goes against the idea of true AI. It's like a self-fulfilling prophesy/paradox or something.
LLMs like ChatGPT isn't AI. It's a fancier version of AutoCorrect.
Excellent video. Please do this again for the others. And other similar types of movies.
Stick with this length.

The way he seamlessly sneaks these in here lmao
Such a shame they never got around to making sequels to this masterpiece.
Not taking the bait
Agreed. It will live on as a one hit wonder, just like neo would have wanted
It's a legendary movie forever remembered in the wild West of movie making. Lol
@JayMaverick 😂😂 well said!
So much potential but best left untouched.
Reinhardt, the surname of Neo's boss, also derives from the Germanic words _ragin_ meaning "counsel" and _hart_ meaning "strong", literally "strong counsel" or "good advice". His boss did indeed give him some good advice: make a choice.
Hart also means deer
Ragin deer 😎
Just hearing "Answer The Call" still gives me shivers. Urgghh
Also Damo had a side business selling Death Sticks in Star Wars
Does feeling like I've already watched this count as a glitch?
Brilliantly done! I can't imagine how much research time you put into this. Very much appreciated! Thanks.
I remember when market stalls made Nokia 8310 faceplates replicas with matrix slide feature 😂
Nokia’s biggest plunder during that time was not making enough of those phones. As a teen, myself and all those around me wanted one but could not find them anywhere. Was the coolest gimmick for a cell phone at the time.
@@HypocritesExposd spot on, perfectly said 😊
53:59 I also think it is possible that the Oracle put somethin in the cookie she gave to Neo to eat. As in the later movie has shown by merovingian that, it's possible to code into food that effect people who ate it. That cookie might be the thing that kick start Neo transformation, or may be even gave some power to him
This was the breakdown i've been waiting for. You absolutely smashed it Mr Orange 😂
Thank you
Your reviews/breakdowns are incredible.
The red dress/ walk thru matrix scene is very similar to the scene of the stroll through Cobb's subconscious in Inception made ~ten years later.
Also.... 🎶" _is dancing with me...cheek to cheek_ "🎶
This movie is my all time fave since seeing it in the theaters three times back in 1999, and this amazing breakdown only reinforced my belief.
THANKS for this, Paul!!!!!
Really loving your movie breakdowns of past films, and this one is simply a beautiful one. Thanks for all your hard work! Looking forward to the Matrix Reloaded video. Cheers!
Cheers mate
I was just talking about The Matrix at work yesterday. Then we get a break down of the movie today. I was going around the office saying "Mr. Anderson." LOL
Hell yea man
56:50 I've always thought that this shot was the most unique in the whole movie in terms of composition.
1999 was grade nine for me and it inspired my third eye to open wide
I have owned a 7110 that has a spring loaded mechanism that is displayed. I still have it. Does it have any value?
Will Smith as neo 😂😂😂
I'm glad that never happened
It would have been cool to see him slap Agent Smith though.
Man i just love you voice and accent! As a non native english speaker i am struggling tho, can't figure out if it's aussie or actually from somewhere in the uk??
North East England, I'm guessing a Geordie.
Wor lass.

Small bit of trivia: Hugo Weaving developed Smith's montone, deep voice by micking The Wachoskis lol.
I like the depth of Neo's name, since it's also an anagram for "one".
don't you mean "eon"?
Noe.
That's the simplist part
Dude I've watched this video twice I'm going to do it one more time.good video man for reals.

2. Neo's door no. 101 is reference to the 101 status code is a transitional response that signals the server's willingness to switch to a different application-level protocol.
3. Oracle asked Neo to accept and eat the cookie like when a user request a server for resources he/she has to accept cookies 😂
