    Great demonstration! I just bought the S&W 686+. Tried all the double action triggers in the store and I thought the Colt had about a 1% better trigger in terms of double action than the S&W and about 80% better than the ruger. But for 1% better trigger it wasn't worth another $500 to me. I'm really happy with the 686.

    The Colt mechanism has at least double the moving parts. I pulled the side-plate off of my Colt Detective Special many years ago (before I, unfortunately, sold it), looked like a pocket watch. Nice action, but Colt kind of went around the world to cross the street.

    • @harperdr1
      @harperdr1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      @@aideningram434 Sure, This was back in 2012. I was working armored car cash deliveries at the time. I was at a customer drop making my way to the door with a large some of cash when a man rushed me from behind firing. He had a Glock 17 9mm (FMJ thankfully) and had both hands fully extended firing as fast as he could pull the trigger. My left hand was on the handtruck and my right was already on the grip of my S&W 686. The first thing I heard was two pops and him yelling "Give me the F###### money! you gonna give me the f##### money!". As I spun around in place the first thing my eyes caught was the muzzle of his gun and again Flash Flash! My eyes carried past the muzzle to the center of his chest and I began to fall away at an angle as I was rotating to try and "get off the X" even though my feet were twisted. As I did I fired three shots on the draw, first from the hip, second at half extension and third at full extension. To be honest I wasn't even aware I was firing until I saw the third shot break. I saw him recoil inwards so I knew I made contact. I hit the wall next to me with my back on the way down and he faceplanted in the concreate right around the corner of the building (door I was going to was right at the corner). I sat up and scanned for any other threats and seeing none immediately did a quick self check for injuries. I had taken one round thru my left hand and one thru my left shoulder near my spine. After a second or two I determined that my left hand was the only thing not working so I got up to make my way back to the safety of the armored truck. As I cut the corner I saw his feet first that were not moving and his arms under him holding his wounds. I covered him the last couple steps back to the truck and let my partner handle the threat from that point while I continued to check for more injuries. Keep in mind this all happened at about 3 feet in under 3 seconds. He fired 7 rounds and I fired 3. All of mine landed in his chest and one must have hit his spine because nothing on him moved below his shoulders. One round had entered his right wrist and gone down his arm blowing out the entire forearm before entering his chest. Trauma Dr. said any of the 3 were fatal wounds. None of my rounds exited his chest. I was loaded with Hornady critical defense. I was fortunate enough to leave the hospital that afternoon. He died on scene. I share this with the hope that it helps somebody. I hope it encourages people to train to the point of reflex. I have permanent nerve damage in my left hand that is a 24/7 reminder. But it still works and there was no major damage on the shoulder so I count myself lucky. Love your friends, Love your family and train for the worst.

    I've got a speed six in the 3" barrel. Put Hogue rubber grips on it and a bit of spring and trigger work and it becomes a nice shooting, excellent carry gun. Smaller and lighter than the GP-100, and unlike the SP-101 it still holds a full 6 shots of any .357 ammo that you care to run. Rugers are indestructible tanks, but they do need a bit of polishing to really make them shine.

    I had a Reeves Jungkind-tuned Python set up for double-action-only shooting many years ago. My gun had the Python Royal Blue finish, a six-inch barrel and a bobbed hammer. It was the sweetest-shooting handgun I have ever fired.
    Despite the fact they didn't have the lock on the ejector rod, Colt revolvers were famous for having the tightest lockup of any double-action revolver. Their frames (which were forged) were also quite robust. An Official Police .38 from the 1960s has no trouble with .38 Special +P loads.

      The S&W is a masterpiece of weight, handling, function, feel and function ability is superb. The beauty is in the group on the target. The fit and feel and function put that group up there. The trigger is the best going and much easier to get perfect. The Colt is very difficult to get as smooth and as light as the S&W. My S&W Trigger is just fantastic. The trigger is like butter smooth. Lighter than grease and not as sticky. Clean. Smooth. Crisp. The break is less than a piece of glass but totally complete. The return is by far the best going. That is why the S&W is the most beautiful. Even though the Colt looks great.

    Here's my two cents, for what it's worth. (Probably a penny.) The first handgun I ever bought was a Colt Python. I thought it was the Cadillac of handguns. Handsome guns indeed. But then someone told me, "The sights are too small". I never realized this until I started shooting Smiths. Yep, the Colt sights are too small. Then another person said, "The Colts only lock-up in one place." Mr. Miculek mentions this fact in this video. So that's another downside to the Colts. Anther *problem* that I had with a Colt Diamondback was light hammer strikes and failures to fire. The problem was a result of the Colt using a "V-shaped leaf spring" in their action. Those V-shaped leaf springs will weaken over time. I could go on and on here, but let me finally say that the bright nickel finish on a handgun makes them very hard to shoot on a bright sunny day; the sun reflects off of the mirror finish - like a mirror...right into your eyes. In summary,..buy yourself a S&W L frame. Then spend the money to have a professional gun smith smooth-up the action, change the springs and further customize the gun. Even if you spend $1,000 on the stock L-frame and another $1,000 on customizing it, it will still be cheaper than a "classic" Python.

    I love Jerry and respect him greatly. I own Smiths and Rugers. Never had a Colt. But this is an infomercial. Comparing tuned S&W's to an obsolete NIB Colt and a small, old short-barreled Ruger is a setup. I'd respect the comparison more if his income wasn't from S&W.

    • @bcaffrey98
      @bcaffrey98 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Of course Jerry is biased. I am too after 40 years of shooting and owning all three brands. He's right about the ease of S&W's to be tinkered with compared to the Colt and Ruger. The S&W action is superior to the others simply because of its simplicity and ability to be easily modified.
      The problem with most Colts was the way you run the trigger. With an S&W the major effort exists getting the hammer started and turning the cylinder. After that, the trigger pull eases up all the way through release. On the Colt, it was easier to get the hammer & cylinder moving at first, but the trigger "stacked up" and became progressively heavier as you neared the release point. This meant you were exerting more pressure just before the release which could cause some jittering of the sights as muscular effort increased. And the trigger return on Colts was less robust than S&W's due to the design. You could lighten the effort on the Colt only so far but not eliminate it. If you ever handle a Colt and can dry fire it watch how the cylinder locking bolt falls into the cylinder notch only when the hammer is about 1/16" from releasing. That fine timing leaves a small window for "tuning" a Colt. Also, the plow-share styled grip was not really a good shape for combat shooting.
      Rugers can be tuned up pretty well, but it takes someone with a lot of experience to smooth out the factory-grittiness and give you a buttery smooth trigger.
      One thing used to be popular on the shooting circuit were "Smolts." A Smith & Wesson frame with a Colt Python barrel. These, as Jerry said, shot the .38 wadcutters better and the Python's bore diameter was a touch tighter (.3561 vs .3568).

      Most of us don't plan to shoot very weak .38 specials as fast as our fingers can go, in a defensive situation, with a revolver. No doubt Jerry is an incredible shooter, but I consider the ability of the gun to handle magnum loads important. He is comparing current S&W to 40+ year old Colt and Ruger. That's an infomercial for S&W. The Ruger GP100 has 3 lockup points. I'm not sure if a ball detent should count as a locking point on those newer Smiths?

    Back when I was one of the boys behind the badge (Sheriff's Deputy) I was lucky enough to have the privilege of carrying anything that I could qualify with! Believe me, I went through a long list making certain that I could switch to whatever I preferred at my own discretion. I spent a lot of time with a 4 inch L-frame, 586 that I went completely through and setup for speed, reliability and FAST reloading. I left single action capability in that gun but bobbed the hammer and used it in D/A mode 98% of the time. I once attended a course through LFI and Mas himself compared his Colt Python action job that cost him $300.00 bucks (1987) to my L-frame which I had tuned myself. Mas was amazed to find that my work was superior to the "name" gunsmith that had done his Python! I considered that about as good a compliment as a mans likely to get..... I used that L-frame for duty, competition and carried it often off duty....always loaded with my personally crafted hand-loads for the work intended and always in .357 Magnum power levels. That load would defeat 12 layers of kevlar in 2 shots and zip right through the steel rim of an old 1976 Ford LTD at 7 yards. I always qualified at Master level with that pistol and my best score was a 597/600.
    I kind of went on a "ramble" here, but in recalling one of my best d/a revolvers brought back some fond memories..... I've been a fan and sincere admirer of Jerry Miculek from before my LE career and still enjoy watching the "Masters Master" do what he does best! God Bless you and the family Jerry. You, among a few select others played key roles in my life when it came to developing mu shooting skills. I hold you in the same regard as I do Mr. Elmer Keith, both legendary men of renown in the world of Handgunning....... and I thank you both from the bottom of my heart.

    Jerry, I have follow you and your wife and daughters shooting for year. I feel that your sold Ruger revolves a little short. My dad bought me my first Ruger Security Six revolver in 1970 and taught me to shoot it. Later I bought a S&W model 686,19, 17, 28, 29, 25 and 60. When it comes to shooting I always have chosen my Rugers over my S&W and I have a number of Rugers. My two favorite Rugers are my GP 100 and my SP101. My Security Six , GP 100 and SP101 have shot lots of rounds with no problems and I like the triggers better than my S&Ws. Never noticed it be slow or without groves. I was disappointed that you didn't put a modern Ruger against your S&W 686. I guess I just don't like to win.

      I agree with cathy308308 The ruger speed six/security six and GP100 seem to hold up under long term use with .357 mag better than the S&W revolvers as a general rule. The action on the S&W can be smoothed up the best with the N frame the most smooth of the brand. The Dan Wesson will run with a steady diet of .357 mag the longest and is the easiest to do action work on, it is to bad it was not included in the tests. The DW barrel system with the adjustable gap and dual threads front and rear is usually the most accurate for long range work on steel rams, etc.

After owning it for a year, I took it apart and mirror polished all of the internal parts, as well as the inside of the frame where they all sat. It feels amazing now. Colt has started producing them brand new again & $1,500 will get you a brand new one of your own.
      Oh & it has a much better trigger.

      Profanity is the lack of vocabulary. Neither of you have any class.

      Okay then Ron Fortier. I'm not going to change my fundamental ways of communicating over the internet to aspire to your subjective view on the matter; fucking smart ass..
      "class" is relative.

      I don’t think you were paying attention. His time with his custom tuned SW was fastest and the grouping at distance was clearly better. I didn’t hear him complain about the trigger on the Smith or the Ruger. Pythons are great revolver, but they are over hyped.
