About 2 minutes before the start, I saw him in spikes and a uniform in the grass by where the course loops back on itself. I didn't know it was Hebert at the time, just weird that this guy was standing way away from the start in spikes. I didn't see him jump in, but based on where he was standing and the video, if you look at the course map, he jumped in on the section where the course does a close U before going back around the lake.

@@RunnerBoi Yep. I think he started out there for two reasons. First it was far enough away from the start where there were only a handful of spectators in that spot. Any closer and people were lining the course.
Second, if you look at the map, the 2mile course intersects with the 5k course, so there was an opening without flags or gates to mark off the course. So an easy part to dip into the race. He was just hanging out in that area for 5-10min before the race started doing drills.

However for other running events there have been plenty of other stranger incidents Including multiple people who entered marathons but cheated (I think one woman took a public bus, until she was only a couple miles from the finishing line, and then entered to 'win'. Also the strangest case of a runner is James Hogue. His life and scandals are covered in the Podcast: Swindled Titled: The Ivy Leaguer (Esther Reed / James Hogue). Years ago, I went to a park nearby to run and there was a meet going on there. It was near the end of the day, and all that was left was a boys' JV race. I let them start, waited about 10 minutes, then began running the course. I was just kind-of jogging and not doing anything hard--I think I was about 30 years old at the time. As luck would have it, some of those JV runners were really slow and I caught up to them, even being 10 minutes behind. I was wearing a walkman and no uniform and training flats, so people knew I was not in high school. Several people shouted at me, even though I was staying to the outside and not interfering with the race. But I felt really bad, so I dropped out and left the course at like the 2 mile mark of a 3 mile (non-repeating) course. I figured there was no way in hell I would catch up to the stragglers, but I still did. I think some of those at the back were walking/running alternately. I don't think I hurt anyone because there were still like 100+ runners in front of me, and it was a JV race. But I would never want to have that happen to me again. I should have just run somewhere else once I saw the meet going on. I can't fathom showing up and trying to win, looking like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite, trying to get back to 1983.

It may have been some kind of dual meet time trial because the course was not marked off or closed. I waited until all the runners had started and gave them a 30 second head start before I tried to catch them. I had just bruised my ribs from a car accident so I couldn't take deep breaths, but it was so fun chasing them down haha.

To these high school runners the state championship is a huge event for them. For a college guy to jump in to get attention is an act of pure ego and selfishness. His only motivation that I can see is to get attention for himself. Some people are calling this a joke or a prank but as far as I can see this guy is a total jerk. There is no conspiracy here, only someone that is looking for acceptance within society and has chosen something he is proficient at - distance running - and is easy to "appear" in. It is well known that we all want success and approbation within our peer group and some people crave it more than others as they are sometimes more insecure than most. Cheating is the route that the desperate look to to get this. They are just "wired" differently, willing to take that chance.
