one reason i think runninglane has such fast performances is because the course is traced with a steamroller, making it essentially feel like a track surface regardless, this team is bound to blow away track season
I went to thousand oaks highschool down the street from them. It was impossible to see any article in the local newspaper that wasn't talking about them. Those guys were insane.
As a Californian and former XC runner who graduated just 2 years before these guys took their greatest title, it’s just amazing how these guys were able to pull it off. In general it’s amazing how any high school team was able to do something crazy like this. I live just 5 hours north (in Salinas) and honestly none of us believed that any team was able to pull something off like this, even where I lived, every single center meet was extremely competitive and have all these high school trying to come out on top then you have these guys that completely destroyed the entire state meet! These guys were the team I wish my team was. Year after year since my freshman year I’ve been hoping that my team would get better and better (and it did for the girls since they won the league championships in my last 2 years of high school) however for everyone else, it was very frustrating. I was the only positive person in my entire team nearly everyone had a negative attitude and never saw themselves come on top. I would always be the one hyping my team up telling them to stop the negative attitude cause we would literally see all the other schools and seeing how positive they were and supportive they were of each other, so was my team however we instead had that negative attitude all the time and it just made our team decline over the years and honestly it was quite depressing. The girls however was a different story. My last 2 years we completely destroyed the league meet and honestly it’s probably the biggest accomplishment my former XC team has ever had in their lifetime so far.

High school cross country nerds should check out the 2004 York High School (Elmhurst, IL). York is a dominant cross country program, but 2004 was special. They won the state championship with 56 points (1, 2, 3, 21, 29). That team was led by Don Sage (14.03), who went on to have a stellar career at Stanford (member of 2 NCAA XC champs and individual champ in men’s 1500). My daughter ran girls cross country in the same conference as York so I saw them a lot over 4 years. I remember that year they ran in the rain for the conference meet and I overheard one of their runners comment after that it was a little slippery out there. Legendary head coach Joe Newton forbade his runners to wear spikes until the state meet.
At this point in time, talent pool and recruiting no longer matters that much. Finding committed fast guys is easy/ and takes little effort nowadays if you really are committed to it. What Newbury Park have that most teams are struggling to even implement is actually prioritizing the athletes and treated them like their results will actually matter for their futures. Also new training techniques, as well as experimenting with new approaches to the training is something so many XC coaches cannot really do, either because they themselves are stuck in the past, or because they don't want to try things outside of the norm. For the athletes at Newbury Park, running fast times and getting scholarships is seen as something important for them to continue on with a brighter future for the athletes.
And it’s so sad i was really excited to see Lex and Leo run since i was helping out near the finish line at whs invite. But that one kid from Nebraska, Carson Noecker went crazy
Noecker has been dominating over here since he was a freshman. He became the first ever 4x boys state champ this october, and is likely the greatest Nebraska distance runner ever.

@RunnerBoi I think you tallied your points wrong at 9:07, shouldn't that be 17 points? Was someone disqualified in the 5 or 6 position? 1+2+3+4 is 10, +7 is 17? ***EDIT: Nevermind, I got it figured out. Because Clovis apparently didn't field a team, the 6 spot is an individual winner but the points go to the next finisher on a team ranking. That's wonky, our state just tallies the points regardless if individuals finish in the mix without a team. Took me a bit to figure that out.
Check Mead High School’s record in Washington State. They won their first title in 1976, in 1988 they started a 9 year title ownership until 1996.
