I used to work for America's version of Value Village and I wanted to add on a few things you talked about! Tag colors change weekly, so fresh items aren't always given yellow tags, you can tell what the new tag color is by the last few digits on the tag which should correspond to the current calendar week unless in a case where old stock is being re-purposed to the sales floor (which usually happens around holidays) in which case the tags might be from years prior. The 30% of items that aren't put on the sales floor are almost always too dirty and damaged to sell, managers push employees to put things out even if it doesn't pass a "personal" inspection because they want more money, if they allowed employees first pick there would be no need for the 48 hour no buying rule. Nothing is washed or cleaned by the store, ever. Almost all usable and unsold clothing gets crated up and sent to countries in need, but very little of their actual proceeds seem to go to charities but they do purchase stock from local charities. And stock is replenished all day from 9am-5pm which is when most of the "production" staff is working, they don't usually work weekends so if the weekends seem dry for new items that's why!

It wasn't much, but a few years back when I bought my daughter a pair of jeans for $4.99, we got home and I washed it with the rest of the laundry. When I went to fold the clothes, I stuck my hand in the back pocket cuz a corner of something was sticking out.. I pulled out a $5 😊 lol so I practically got it for free and my daughter got to put the money in her piggy bank haha so since then, I check EVERY pocket! But so far, nothing since then lol

  • @skittlez1974

Yellow isn't new every week .. they have a colour system of like 6 colours each colour is a week last week was yellow week 44 .. next week will be week 45 and a different colour they go in order on.a chart .. each day of the week is numbered Sunday is day 1 and so on til Saturday.. so if say week is this past week yellow week 44 and it's Tuesday and an item comes out that day it will say 443 on the tag .. 44 for the week of the year and 3 for Tuesday 😁

Where I work, when you donate, your donating on behalf of our non profit partner which is the cerebral palsy Association. We then have to pay the CPA to buy those donations back. Then when we buy them back we now ship the clothes and shoes, accessories, jewelry and books to a warehouse and they have people price them there. Then ship them back to our store and the production team rolls the products on the floor. The houseware and furniture items we do price in store as well. Tag Color’s = how old the product is by the week. We recycle anything we can that’s doesn’t sell and money from that but the things we have no choice but to garbage we have to compact and we lose money from that. We always try sell what we can so if you see something pricey and it’s below average condition you can ask for a low price but 40% they will say no

Heads up about tag colours, they rotate every week. It's how staff can keep track of how long something is on the floor. There's no way we could change the tags on every item every week. Easiest thing to do is ask an employee what colour they're on this week and you'll know what's new and fresh.

Something people need to understand about VV/Savers is that they pay most of their sorting and production staff full-time and give them benefits. That’s extremely rare for retail these days. Their pricing model reflects this. When you see something that you know costs less at another thrift store, it’s because that money is going towards their employees’ health and to support them, whereas non-profit shops typically don’t give that much to their few paid employees.
It is also a fireable offense for staff to hide items to get past the two-day waiting rule. They also get some trouble if they call someone to buy an item for them as soon as they put it out to the floor.
For clothing pricing, the pricers don’t actually get to choose the dollar amount that goes onto an individual item. They choose a grade - the quality of clothing based on its condition - and considering that and the brand together, the machine spits out a predetermined price. Do they get a higher price sometimes? Definitely, but it isn’t done maliciously or in an effort to wring more money out of customers. For housewares pricing, unless something has a previous price sticker on it, it’s entirely guesswork. The only things they look up for pricing are collectibles or things that are clearly high value, like expensive kitchen appliances.
Staff have quotas they need to reach every day for both how many items they put out to the floor AND how many pounds of donations they sort through. It’s an incredibly frustrating, high-pressure job. There isn’t a lot of time for cleaning or checking every single item, as much as staff wish that wasn’t the case. Having to process over 5,000 pounds of clothing a day, around 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of housewares and over 1,000 pounds of books every day is HARD, even when working in teams.
Keep all of these things in mind when you shop there. A lot of effort goes into the items that are put out. Finding broken or dirty items is bound to happen every so often when employees are trying to hit quotas to please the bosses.

One unsold items are compacted and tossed into the trash value village does not keep a record of what percentage of your donations are thrown out .
And while staff can't buy items til it's been on the shelf for two days. It's naive to think they don't call their friends to tell them something is coming out.
Its too easy for staff to cheat the system
One quick text and the pricer can put the item out just as the customer comes into the store
      No one the wiser
But really offends me is the big compacter in back of every store

They aren’t just talking about the clothing. Almost all of the books and media items are below $10. Most housewares items and toys are below that price as well, and even the furniture items are usually cheaper because they want to make sure it doesn’t sit on the sales floor for too long.

Mf. Fili, where do you sell besides FB? I think Value Village operates like all charitable thrifts including the hospital thrifts. They get donated items, or they buy in bulk, and resell it so that they can cover labor and operational costs.

I agree with you completely with the fact that value village is a for profit company and I know people toss a lot of hate at that fact. Generally at my location, they will let you exchange your electronic if it doesn't work because we don't want you to keep something that's broken. Preach! They definitely can't go through all those donations with a fine tooth comb. I typically relate it to human error because humans ain't perfect.

Each store has a charity they support, the donations go onto carts (soft= clothes, shoes etc, hard= dishes, misc items etc and media/books). That is then weighed up, the weight will then be recorded and the charity will be paid by the weights of each cart.

  • @maskedathiest
    @maskedathiest ปีที่แล้ว

    another tip....
whenever you buy any kind of video game system, or electronic.......never ever bring it into your home right away.
always put items into a big garbage bag and soak a couple of paper towels in rubbing alcohol. Then close the bag for 10 hours.
the air will become toxic and kill any critters hiding inside. roaches love heat, and they will infest electronics because of this.
I have been doing this method for the last year of thrifting. I have not had any stowaways in my home yet.
as for clothes, always bag them in the car...put them right into the dryer when you get home. bed bugs can hide on clothes.

Staff never get first pick. They have wait for 2 days before they can buy it off the sales floor. Not even the refused stuff that gets trashed is allowed to be taken by staff. There's no secret what goes on in the back, as the room is wide open to patrons. But you're not really supposed to go beyond into the back for safety reasons. Charities are NOT non-profit organizations. There's a difference. VV doesn't support non-profits, they support charities. It's a bit fuzzy on where non-profits come into play. VV does do exchanges but that's it. No, nothing gets cleaned, of course, but stuff gets inspected by several people and they look for tears, foul smells, and other flaws. If it's something that can get washed or fixed they'll still accept it as something sellable. The backroom is filthy and super dusty, so anything should get cleaned at home. Nothing should actually be found in the items. Especially drug paraphernalia. VV takes that shit seriously as poses a danger to staff and customers. If you see it report it to staff right away along with the tag. There's info on who graded the items on it and what day. They are trained and told be thorough, but due to time/speed quota pressures someone might be cutting corners to not get yelled at.

Value village staff were told to hike up prices just after the pandemic
Some say it's becuae they were going public and they wanted to increase their profits
They are over priced and staff are pressured to work fast
Donations in some stores are down as rhe public are more aware they are a profit store and they would prefer to donate to a charity store that rhe proceeds actually go to their community
They also dump alot of stuff straight into dumpster
A d the worst is they compact the items first so that unsold items are unstable
I really am offended when a over priced items gets dumped instead of trying tonreduce the price to a more believe and sellable price

Depending on your DM, VV doesn't accept mattress/box springs, couch hide-a-beds and hazmat( lightbulbs, batteries, gas, kerosene, household cleaning products, oil etc). Since they take everything else you typically get donations that should be going to the dump but people are cheap and don't want to spend the money to dispose of it themselves.

Idk why.. But i have this feeling something is going on with higher pricing at the thrift stores.. As per said their staffs are given 50% off and only allow to buy the item after three days displayed at the selling floor.. The hypothesis are staffs purposedly pricing the item at the highest (doubled) to deter thrifters from getting it and would buy that for themselves, after three days at half cut price to resell it or just for themselves.. Which is the price should be.. Its still a hypothesis and maybe you could do a monitoring on items that overpriced and comeback after 3-4 days.. Sorry for my bad english.. This is a nice video anyways.. As always..

Wrong. They do get good conditioned, expensive items. They are a for profit company so they are trying to make a profit, understand? But there are a lot of people that are resellers, hustling, buy it cheap, sell it high.

Value village uses the charities to gather donations .and pays then onlyb24 cents per pound
That's why so much crap is donated to the charities some people donate crap to value village and give their better quality items to other real charitiesthey just donate crap to collect the coupon

Value village are crooks they get stuff for free and sell it way to much that and only a small percentage goes to big brothers and big sisters let say you spend 28 dollars tax included only 3 dollars maybe 4 if lucky goes to charity they pocket 90 to 95 percent of the sales savers inc which owns value village makes billions of dollars from ripping off the poor you really got to check the price tags there and they mix some of the expensive stuff with the cheap stuff to i seen a t shirt going for 17.99 plus tax a 15 dollar shirt only takes 6 dollars to make it and 2 dollars for storage and shipping for anyone thats paying attenchen thats over double the money to make a t shirt its insane

Yellow tags are not new. It’s a different colour every week. It just happened to be yellow that week I were there.
Also it’s like slave labor there. You have quota and if you get it done in a day you get in shit.
Staff does NOT get first pick. Everything goes to the floor first.
This lady have no idea what she is talking about

Your wrong value village does not give a percent of profit but rather they pay only a price per pound
So let's say they sell a tie designer for 20 the charity got paid only pennies
And the real profit goes straight to value village
The charities get are used to collect donations .

Value village is not a charity thrift store
Donate only to non profit thrift stores
Salabation army helps support food banks
And goodwill support foodbanks and job training
Value village maquardes as a charity
The big community donation sign on front of the store doesnt nean they share profits with charites

Value village compacts all unsold it's
They Won't reduce pricev of unsold items
This is under reported. the fact they over price your donations means more items to lanfills
    That video would go viral
Theetal donations often go strait to scrap and they sell those items to svrapbmetal dealers and now they are switching to self check out so they are cutting jobs
Why aren't more people doing a video on that
It's like we are complacent if they refuse to change their behavior we must botcot them and donate elsewhere some people even just leagecitekdctgey don't need on the end of their driveways to allow people to take what they need time to rethink value village and time to stand up for consumers
If you want to go viral post about the real truth
Items with bedbugs and when they spray in the store bug spray
Their are huge problems for consumers
    Rethink donations
