So cool. I never knew that story. i knew there must've been an explanation of the Voice of Harold lyrics but I never looked into it. Pretty cool. For those who haven't heard the entire Dead Letter Office album, it's very good. In fact, I think it's better than anything they released after Document. Might seem crazy to many people except hardcore REM fans like me, but I think their first 5 records are their best by far.

So being a recent manager at Goodwill I will give ya a heads up why ya never find anything.. All the media is put in a big box ( I mean HUGE.. 4 foot x 5 foot by 4 foot) We just through it all in a box, records, cds, tapes, 8tracks, real to reals. They get sent to main warehouse and they empty the box into bins. Then 4 or 5 people scan every record, cd, tape and if they come up as valuable they send them to their online store. If not they get tossed back into the big box and sent back to the same store. Sometimes those like me will pull out rare records and puts them in collectables area. Or I would put out some decent stuff just to get people in, and those who collected records a chance at some good stuff.. Pretty much all stuff is done that way now at Goodwill..

not all charity shops and chains are as organized, but over time more will follow that. the business model for the stores is changing now, they are an established business and no longer need to sell everything super cheap. which kinda sucks for long income people, i've seen these places put everything up, making is hard for people to get cheap clothing, essentials.

    • @figuresix
      @figuresix ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@varsityathlete9927 I use to make a good living reselling stuff from goodwill, and other thrift stores.. Now no way to do it. Especially when everyone around here sells used for new prices. And even stuff still sealed for higher price. Im lucky to find 1 or 2 things a month to make any money on these days..

@@figuresix That wasn't going to last forever, the stores were going to move into improving their pricing/sorting. I enjoy the looking more than expecting to get anything. Virtually all vinyl I buy collections directly off the owner. We get some really good stuff that way, but higher prices.
I could buy more stuff too, but it's best to focus on one thing. Occasionally I see something in a house and ask, got a complete skeleton this week that way lol. Old doctor, just gave it to me because he was shocked how much we paid for the records. I'm keeping it, as it's a neat thing to have, he said himself it's worth a lot of money. That is because I like to talk with people about their life and stuff, it's not just buy records, haggle them down and leave.

Some stores do this and some don’t. I know the media person at my local store and he sorts and puts out all CDs and records that come into the store. I think it depends on the Goodwill region. They all do it differently.

Man, I have been on the lookout for this record for years, ever since I first heard "Voice of Harold" back when DLO came out. Now I know what the cover looks like at least! That's a bummer about the disc being missing. I've had that happen before and did the same thing you did, searching every record in a stack of junk and came up empty. Can't remember what record that was, though. Awesome story, and thanks for going into detail about why Michael Stipe was reading from the back of that album. I saw R.E.M. in FL in 1985 and 1986, the first time with Let's Active and the second with Flat Duo Jets. Imagine that! Awesome channel, BTW.

The records out here in San Diego run about $2.50 each at the thrift shops, so it's harder to take a chance a pile of unknowns. Sure was great when they were only a buck! Best find in the past few years was a $60 Don Cherry Blue Note LP mint in the shrink that I got a few weeks ago!

Great story, Dylan! As a longtime Goodwill shopper I can unfortunately confirm what figure 6 is saying is true here in Northern Colorado as well. 10 years ago, any given trip could lead to a treasure trove find of records and/or vintage stereo gear. Plentiful and reasonably priced. Now, essentially everything goes to Denver for processing, and what comes back is the dregs that no one wants. The good stuff goes on the Goodwill auction site. Especially disappointing that the donated stuff does not stay in the local community. Unfortunately, I think most donors naïvely assume it does!

This is exactly what thrifting records is all about, what a great find! I wish there was a good dedicated marketplace for sleeves/loose records. There has to be a loose record that needs a good sleeve companion. The amount of times I've found an awesome sleeve with no record is silly.

    Hi from New Zealand.
I recently helped a friend clean out his garage.. it took hours and hours(6ish) of sweaty, dusty work.
At the end we cracked a beer and he says pull back that curtain.. behind the curtain was maybe 500 records.. he says I want them all gone today.
As I loaded my car I didn't see a single one I wanted, but I thought you never know..
99% show tunes from 1930s represses to modern musicals. Gospel.. i was looking through the last maybe 15 records, I found a mint NZ press of The Specials. The 3rd last one was Back in Black 2nd last one was AC/DC POWERAGE... The blue one.. could not believe my eyes. Take care jared

Since selling off a bunch of records in the early 2000's and finding out later what some were worth, I have since educated myself and got back into the search for vinyl. I was in Tulsa Oklahoma and was doing some stops at garage sales and thrift stores. I stopped at one garage sale early in the morning and the nice elderly lady had some records her deceased husband had from the 60's and 70's, I looked thru the stack and knew a couple of the bands, there were a couple Beatles albums and a couple of Doors albums. She wanted 25 dollars for about 50 albums, so I bought them, heck it was 50 cents an album why not seeing they were mainly rock albums and a few Beatles and Doors albums. After I purchased them I made a few other stops, didn't find any other vinyl and decided togo back to my brothers house and go thru my find. In that stack of 50 albums was an original Marbel Phroggs album, in VG+, I never heard of Marble Phrogg so I went on discogs and looked the album up and I nearly S--- my pants, this was a rare album. I also found a 1st pressing of Strawberry Alarm Clocks incense and peppermint album in VG+ as well. The Beatles and Doors albums were reissues from the mid to late 70's, so nothing really valuable there but still they are Beatles and Doors.

If we're talking exclusively thrift stores I'm sure I've found a few decent records but nothing over $100. Flea markets are another story though. I found a turquoise Zeppelin I with an unscratched matrix for $10 and a plum label 1st UK II with it, also $10. Best records I ever found in a NC thrift store was "Feel The Sound of Harvey Mandel" which isn't rare but a great listen anyways. I also found the cleanest original Zeppelin albums I've ever seen at a flea market near Asheville. If I ever get down that way again I will visit your shop.

  • @888strummer

Ouch no record, but very cool to get it up in your shop! Sounds more like a $250 sale but not bad for 49 cents. Best I ever did from a Good will was a 50 cent record of an early '60's record on Cameo by The Campers that I bought a good 20+ years ago and sold on ebay for about $150. It featured a bunch of kids songs like Polly Wolly Doodle sung by some young unknown singers. Only a few months before I bought it; the record was a newly discovered gem as one of the unknown singers was a young Phil Ochs(the folk singer) before he had made it as a star. His brother and his sister both confirmed it was him as he was not credited on the album. They said he was in Philly I think or NYC and was approached to sing and needed money. Anyway; that was my best thrift find ever and now it's probably just a $20 sale

Nice find Man! Can you answer this question though….”is there actually a real market for that record? Who is looking for that at that price?”

I'm most intrigued by your buying 1000 records per week. What percentage walks into the shop?

In 1990, I found a $75 record for 15 cents at a St. Vincent de Paul in Portland OR. It's a 1967 issue of Robbie Basho's "Seal of the Blue Lotus."

I'm an REM fan and have the RECKONING lp but would NEVER pay a grand for a recording by a group of nobodies---even though Michael Stipe recorded some of their lyrics from their lp cover. Silly story but fascinating just the same. LOVE that twist!! Got a big laugh out of it. Well done. (Feel free, anyone,to enlighten me here if you feel I'm not getting the gist of the story. I won't be offended.)

At least you have the cover. That sounds like it’s the only reason to buy it anyway.

Hi Dillion! I have around 500 Lp's from the 70' to the 90'! I want to sell them on Ebay (Beginner). If possible, could you make a short video how to sell the LP's the best? (Making good photos with the shiny surface is not easy!!) Regards from Switzerland Edward
