I loved In the Cut ~ it was great to see Meg stretch herself as an actress like that. It's also one of the few Jane Campion movies I like, but that's another discussion.

Sad that the movie "In The Cut" is considered as Ryan's career downfall. I really enjoyed the movie. It had an erotic atmosphere with beautiful cinematography. Flawless performances from Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Kevin Bacon.

There's an obvious hypocrisy between what fans accept from male movie stars and female ones. There were always roles for "cute girls" but when the looks start to go, those roles dry up. The actress can either expand (if they are good enough thespians) into supporting roles or jump to the "mommy track" and make much fewer films. We see far less of many of her contemporaries too such as Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer. It's just the way Hollywood works and most actresses claim they are glad to be free of the Hollywood meat grinder. Just enjoy your millions, Meg, and be happy you got out when you did.

Supposedly Nicole was meant to star in the film before Meg and that’s why she still has a producing credit

  • @d.l.parham157

My recollection is that the scandal of the messy divorce between her and Dennis Quaid tainted with the rumors about Russell Crowe did more damage to her than did a movie role. None of this hurt the reputation of the men, but Ryan suffered a lot of condemnation at the time, as I recall. I also don't believe Ryan's career has ended...she has changed course, as all aging actresses have to because society is very unkind to older women and very accepting of aging men. I think the title of this video is misleading.

Pretty sure it was the affair with Russell Crowe and the failure of Proof of Life that did more damage than In the Cut. Then there was the follow up Against the Ropes, The Women, and In the Land of Women that sealed her fate. I still love her tho. I hope she makes a comeback.

I thought In The Cut was a very good movie. It was filmed beautifully, the horror scenes were properly horrific, and her acting in the film was great. Maybe it wasn’t the film ruining her stardom and just her taking a step back from silly celebrity. It’s one thing to be good at what you do and to be famous. Two different things entirely.

This movie was started pre-9/11 (Jane Campion was scouting locations at NYU, my school, in 1996) and (like FLESH AND BONE) was supposed to get Ryan past romcoms. But when it came out in 2003, the country wanted to forget anything with a pre-9/11 edge. I always thought this was the right role at the wrong time.

In my opinion, I think a lot of the outrage that came from the release of that movie was ginned up by the media. For the most part she was always recognized as a cute sweeter than sweet actress and to a degree was typecast as that. However, the Hollywood community is extremely toxic by nature and they will turn on anybody at any given moment if they feel there is something to gain from it. I saw the movie and while it was definitely a dynamic departure from her cotton candy rolls I think she portrayed her character well. The fact that the movie was not particularly well written is really not her fault. Strictly speaking, I think she really got burned out on Hollywood nonsense and decided to park company of her own volition. Frankly, the idea of that movie ending her career as the subject of this video is kind of weak in its premise. In fact, I think if she wanted to act again she could go back and get good rolls anytime she wants. Simply put, I don't think Hollywood dumped her so much as she dumped hollywood. LOL

I think this attitude that people have that they own an actor and the image is totally absurd. I'm not sure why any actor or actress needs to appear nude on the screen. I find all that nudity to be a demeaning/controlling aspect of movie making. That being said I could care less about an actor's personal life unless they kill someone. I don't idolize actors. I admire them for their work and the image that they are able to put on the screen or stage or radio. I don't confuse what an actor does for a job and their personal qualities. Some may be the same, most are greatly different. The whole idea of acting is to act and convince viewers/listeners that the representation is real. If they can't do that they aren't acting. But the audience is super stupid if they believe that the act is the person. I like to see a good performance even if I hate the script. I think Meg Ryan is a good actress whose audience confused her with a fictional Pollyanna. I'd love to see her in in-depth roles. Maybe as she ages we will get to see her take on more in-depth characters. Or maybe she has had enough--totally understandable. At any rate, I have enjoyed her performances.

This channel is pretty much bullsh$t. Meg certainly did carry on after this movie. In 1989, she got her first lead role in the romantic comedy film 'When Harry Met Sally...', which was followed by her portrayal of Annie Reed in 'Sleepless in Seattle' and Kathleen Kelly in 'You've Got Mail'. Some of her best roles, they earned her 'Golden Globe' nominations and established her as one of the most successful actresses in romantic comedy films. The list of her other such movies includes 'When a Man Loves a Woman' (1994), 'French Kiss' (1995), 'Addicted to Love' (1997), 'City of Angels' (1998), and 'Kate & Leopold' (2001). Her filmography also includes the biographical film 'The Doors' (1991), the war-film 'Courage Under Fire' (1996), the action-thriller 'Proof of Life' (2000), and the comedy-drama 'The Women' (2008). In 2016, she produced, directed and starred in the drama film 'Ithaca'.

I'll never understand why there is any stygma for performing nude scenes or sex scenes in a movie that is coined as "an erotic thriller". Actors and actresses aren't suppose to be pinned down to a public image. The main reason you act, is to perform in a way you've never performed before, in hopes that something great comes from it. I can think of a handful of movies that didn't turn out great, but I'd still give the people in them credit for trying to do something that breaks the mold. One of the worse reviewed movies is "Showgirls", but if there is one thing I'd credit Elizabeth Berkley for in her graphic nudity as a stripper in the movie, is that she committed to the part. There is nothing worse than a movie where someone is not convincingly what they are portraying, like Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers. She's the SUPPOSE to be the hot stripper that shows a newbie the ropes..but then never strips beyond underwear.. Whats the point. If Jennifer wasn't willing to strip totally naked, fine, but they should have found another actress for that role that would have. I mean you had another singer in that movie that WAS IN FACT an actual stripper. So why didn't they just have Cardi B show her the ropes. She at least does a topless scene with pasties.

This was going to turn Ryan’s career toward better juicier roles. Like all things just before 9/11, the movie was made in one world and released in another. Jane Campion was crafting it in the late 90s, when edgy was good. It ended up being released in 2003, when the US needed to feel safe, grounded, in the wake of the attacks. It should have been Ryan’s next FLESH AND BONE, but it wasn’t a safe movie, so it bombed. It’s a beautiful eerie film, though, and Ryan and Ruffalo had great screen chemistry…
