What I love about this movie is Alberto's relationship with Massimo. At first he looks like a tough man but he's a big guy with a soft heart and he took Alberto under his wing. Alberto might have lost his real father, but he found Massimo, the father he deserved. Also Massimo won't be lonely anymore when Giulia's not around.

I thought "Bruno" was Alberto's father. The reason Alberto associates his dad's name with hesitation/inhibition is probably because perhaps while Bruno did like the surface as much as his son, he was probably more "careful" about it, and would probably end up punishing and lecturing Alberto about being reckless, and so Alberto would end up associating his dad's name with annoying hesitation.

this was my first thought the moment he brought up bruno. i kept waiting for him to explain why he called it bruno. when they had a fight, luca saw the tally marks on wall and when he went up to alberto i thought he was gonna ask "alberto, who is bruno?" but noo

I'm also thinking that when Alberto gave up on the Vespa, he let go of his dad. It felt a bit lika a "I don't need him/to be like him anymore, i've found my family." And i think that's really sweet.
I seriously love the ending how Alberto said, “you got me off the island Luca, I’m okay!” and everything after that
Oh I just bust out crying when I heard that!!!
I hated the ending. Alberto got off the island, but he still sacrificed his life-long dream for Luca 😭

being impulsive and overly possessive of luca, plus automatically assuming people want him gone when he does something wrong or they get mad at him.
When Alberto says “maybe he’d change his mind” while he’s crying, that got me. I started crying too. I honestly don’t think his dad was killed or taken, I think his dad wanted to solve his own problems, or like you said, didn’t want the responsibility, therefore leaving his own son. This may have put an image in Alberto’s mind that he left because of him and it just hurts thinking about it like that. Thinking his dad chose to leave on purpose, maybe, just stabs me in the heart. But who knows, there are also other possibilities. Just makes me cry every time 😂😭

Even if his dad did die or get killed, it was still very apparent his intentions were to abandon Alberto. If he'd done the whole "I'm going to get cigarettes" type of abandonment then ppl could make the argument he meant to come back, but he was pretty blatant if he told Alberto he was old enough to be independent.
Iono, I think people saying the dad died or got caught is a tiny bit of an apologist for him, like "he can't be THAT bad." Oh yes, he could.

It's just sad (Of course tears came down on my eyes) that Alberto has been alone this whole time, the fact that he wanted Luca to be in his side the whole time and as well his jealousy towards Giulia's bond with Luca. He has the freedom to do anything, but what's missing is that acceptance and someone there for him like a father or a friend. In the end Alberto decided to stay with Massimo because in the film you can see how much Alberto looked up with Massimo and slowly form a father to son bond together. In the end I'm happy that both of them Luca and Alberto are happy for what decision and path they have chosen. 🇮🇹💙

@@stopthecap3768 Arthur and Aurora we're the king and queen from The Paramo's Reign that was in England where the royal monarchy stills exist. Arthur and Aurora had their son Alberto, but one day was kidnapped by a witch and also cursed Alberto making him turn into a sea monster everytime he touches the water. Afortunelly Alberto falles from the witches arm and he get lost until he arrived to Portorosso in Italy. Alberto grewed up and survived by himself. Alberto also build his tower to live and he just lied to Luca because he had amnesia, Alberto just remmeber the name of his mother Aurora that was Scorfano and not from his father Arthur that was Pendragon. So Alberto's full name is Alberto Pendragon Scorfano.
I have a theory, maybe just like how Mebh's mother was taken captive by the Lord Protector when trying to find a safer place for their pack to live, mayne Alberto's father met the same fate, if not worse
We know that he and Alberto lived in an abandoned tower on an island, something that'd be dangerous for sea monsters, that they collected things and have more interactions with human than other sea monsters do
What if: after being seen by some of the fishermen, Alberto's dad told his son to stay while he draw the attention of the hunters sent after them, knowing that he can't risk leading them back to the tower and to his son, Alberto's father chose to lead them as far away as possible, but was ultimately caught up with and killed
Same ideas. I think his dad is dead. And I still disapointed that movie has extra small 95 minutes screentime and a whole sea monster conflict ends in 5 sec. , thanks to bonding Alberto with Gulia father.
It's just fun moment, when he pronounced that they won, he holds his hand and drag him up. Like only Alberto, not even Luca. And how he just cares about him. Yeah, he found a good father.

My headcanon is Alberto’s dad died. I’m not sure what else he’d be doing when it seems pretty evident that the sea monsters need to use the buddy system to survive unnoticed.

Mini theory:
What if his dad was actually human and his mother was a sea monster that died during child birth due to unnatural reproduction. I feel like Alberto's father truly loved his mother and saw Alberto as "this kid who ruined everything" when she passed away; which is why he was resentful towards him
This can also explain why his father has been to the human town often, but never brought Alberto with him. Or why he chose to raise Alberto on this abandoned island instead of under the sea like all the other sea monsters (cause his dad can't breath under water like sea monsters do).
He never wanted sea monster child, or the responsibility of keeping Alberto a secret/safe from humans that could harm him. He just wanted to go back to his normal life, before Alberto was in the picture, which is why he abandoned him to start a new life; away from sea monsters. i feel like he had that "i never asked for any of this" mindset some parents have, but out of respect of his mother, didn't abandon Alberto on the spot; but raised him to the bare minimum for him to be on his own; until he was 13

I love this movie, don’t get me wrong, my heart just breaks tragically for Alberto. He is really a great friend and did not deserve such a tragic past that left him so traumatized he gets so insecure. I feel so bad for him because I also can relate at times. I felt like his dad left him because he felt it was his own fault (hence the quote “…and I’m just the kid that ruins everything.”) which is so untrue.
Man, I have never met such an animated character as tragic as Alberto (besides Ian Lightfoot). I love him so much and wish I had a friend just like him. ❤️✨

In la luna, there is a boy with a hat, the hat is later seen in the movie of Luca. Alberto says he touches the moon, and so does the boy in La Luna. The man in the boat in la luna, LOOKS THE SAME AS Massimo. But with an arm… the theory is Massimo had a brother, who married a sea “monster” and had Alberto

Your ideas about Alberto's father make sense, but I think it's also interesting to look at why the director would have included the plot point of a parent consciously leaving a teenage child, especially one as wonderful as Alberto. What is the most widespread reason why parents reject their teenage children? Because they came out of the closet. This is just one more way the LGBTQ+ community can relate to a parable, even if Disney wouldn't let the characters *actually* be queer.

I feel like what happened was that theory his dad met someone in town and wanted to start a new life with them. But of course he has a son. Thought it’ll probably be easier to hide the fact that he’s a sea monster himself than having to deal with hiding himself and his son’s sea monster forms. So he abandoned Alberto to start a fresh new life with probably a new partner (possibly human), far inland away from the sea.
It’s sad because that actually what happened to my grandpa and his brother when he was young but with his mother. Both sent to live with his grandparents in Texas while his mom started a new life with her new husband and new half siblings all the way to California.

I think his father wanted to make Alberto independent enough before the father had to leave for reasons beyond his control. I am thinking his father had a fatal illness and didn't want Alberto to have to watch his get sicker and sicker, so he left once he knew Alberto would be okay on his own. Or maybe he had to leave for other reasons, go somewhere that Alberto couldn't go, or wouldn't have a quality of life. I don't think a father would tell his son he is leaving for good because the child was old enough now, parents and children always stay connected. If his father was a "jerk" or a "bad dad", then he would have just left and not said anything, or let his son think he died. But by preparing Alberto, and telling him he was leaving, you know the father cared about him and wanted what was best for him. At least, I hope that is why.

My theory is because of a woman , either finding a new one and not wanting baggage or because Alberto reminded him of his wife. Either way, my guess is that since Alberto is very careless and adventurous the dad was afraid of him blowing their cover so he just dumped him on the island and told him he'll be fine there (especially since humans steer clear of it)
It's so heart breaking that he actively let Alberto know he was abandoning him instead of just leaving and not coming back.

@Steps I can relate to. It's why I like him so much, I draw a lot of similarities to myself. Only lucky ducky for me I'm more introverted, being isolated or alone as an extrovert? Yeesh, torture.
It's also why I can understand his behavior with Luca. His abandonment issues were probably kicked into high gear while trying to hide his trauma.

Maybe the statue of a man killing a seamonster is Alberto's father and maybe he did not like seamonsters and when he discovered Alberto was a seamonster he left him....... That's what I think

And, if you think about it, if sea monsters do live in communities like Luca's, then they're a predominantly pack, or pod, minded species. Being alone for that long, when it wasn't even his choice to be alone, caused Alberto to have some negative pod mindset where he thought he had to be possessive and persuasive to keep whoever came into his life. And because Luca was so much more naive and inexperienced, possibly as Alberto had once been, Alberto mentally and socially added Luca to his new pod. His jealousy of Giulia stemmed from seeing her as trying to break up his pod. The fight that he had with Luca was him fighting to keep his pod together. And when Luca continued to act human, Alberto saw it as his pod being taken away again. Alberto's father leaving him to start a new life with a group of adults rather than just his son seems plausible. So now Alberto has done the same with Luca, Giulia, and Massimo. Now, I'm going to go dry my face from the tears.

Alberto's father, didn't want the responsibility of raising his son, possibly because he didn't have the ' skills,tools, or knowledge'..to raise his son 'properly'.....he did what he felt was 'best' for both of them, regardless of the emotiional pain.......but Alberto as 'turned around' as we saw when Luca asked him, 'how will i know you are ok?',he responded..'Luca, you got e off the island....I'm 'ok''.......tearjerker moment.
Was a good movie but separating Alberto and Luca just ruined it for me. They deserved to continue to be friends and stay together and travel together

Yes, its true. They go too melancholic. Like they know exactly where to push inside ourhearts and memories. I know. I cried too and Albertos and Lucas life's circumstances made me feel sad. You know, memories came to me😢. But it also make us laugh. Good things happened at the end. Alberto won a big family and Luca expanded his family and his dreams by having new friends. And it so funny to see every risk the took and they never died . I just remember the crazy things I did when I was a child. I could have died. I was Like Luca but I did have too many Albertos around and there's a time when I was Alberto too. Silensio Bruno! Also its funny the way they all in the movie talk and the insults :What's wrong with you stupido! hahahahah And the names chiccio and Guido hahahahahaha... And the the cat attacking Luca and Alberto and acting suspicious. The innocence of both Luca and Alberto. The way Giulia talks. The nostalgic enchanting music and Luca dreaming awake... The scenarios, I loved the scenarios. Its feel like home.

I believe his father is Joe Gardner from Pixar's Soul. Maybe it's the same designer/animator, but you seriously just can't deny that there is an uncanny resemblance

I was counting the scratch Mark's and I couldn't get all of them, but I got around 285 x 2, which would be almost 2 years. Albertos been alone since he was 12 ;-;

So here is my theory:
- So yes his mom was caught in a net but she turned human so his dad has no clue that she is a seamonster when they have Alberto
- She dies in childbirth :(
-His dad is heartbroken and to make things worse, when he has to wash his newborn kid, he's a ✨seamonster✨
- His dad freaks out and even becomes neglectful and resentful to his kid because he is worried he will get them both killed
- He eventually decides it's him or his son and it's NOT gonna be him so when Alberto turns 12 he leaves
-When Alberto is 14 the movie starts and he meets Luca and Giulia
- Now by the end of the movie Alberto has found his TRUE dad, (not his biological dad but a GOOD one) Massimo. 😭
now the main question is... "can Sea monsters feel warm spots in the water?"
1:04 that proofs his not in love with Luca, just afraid to loose him, this movie can also be concidered a lgbt story, but an lgbt story, to help, not to show (what I mean, the lgbt part is the reference of the transformation, and not Alberto and Luca)
PS: before anyone says anything, I don’t think the ship is bad, they will be a good couple, just… it’s a bit better for them to be just friends, and leave the transformations as the only lgbtq+ reference

I have a weird feeling that Alberto actually did experience humans as a young kid. Why would he be so insistent to Luca about how others will react to seeing his sea monster form if he hasn’t actually had something like that happened to him already...?
I have a theory about his past too:
👨👩👧 Alberto’s parents lived on the land as humans (maybe he even had a human mother who met his father on the beach) but at school his peers discovered he was a sea monster at a young age and bullied him because of it (he has scars on his body, like that scratch on his arm near where Guillia touched when she discovered his secret) I think this would explain his interest in humans, because of his mother, but also explains his initial mistrust of humans
💔 Maybe his mum vowed to keep him safe at home and home schooled him instead, but then she ended up getting sick and passed away. The dad probably blamed the son for overworking her and stressing her out, making Alberto blame himself too (which he explains when he says to Luca that he always makes things worse and everyone is better off without him) when in reality she just had a terminal illness like cancer or something.
🌊 Alberto’s dad was too depressed to stay inland where everything reminded him of his lost wife, so he found the abandoned broken tower to hide Alberto away in. After a few years he was bored and wanted to go back to land, but he saw Alberto as too much of a liability so lied to him and said he’d be back when he really just abandoned him.
🔎 So Alberto lived alone for a few years, collecting human memorabilia to try and keep a connection with his human past, and mother, even though he realistically probably wouldn’t actually remember that much from his childhood and those more traumatic times in his life... Until he met Luca and the story continues.
That’s my theory based on those little tid-bits of his dialogue and actions from throughout the film 🤷♀️
Edit: Although, it would be nicer if his dad wasn’t an arsehole, so maybe other people’s theories that he was captured or killed by fisherman while trying to find food and supplies for them both is a bit nicer...

I think he was planning to come back after doing more surface exploring he just got lost and couldn’t find his way back

This movie also teach adults to take care not only of their own kids but other's people kids even more when they are orphans or they need help to reach their dreams.

I just love it! I can watch it again and again.
I think Hector from Coco could possibly be Alberto's father. Time lines up, could've gotten drunk and cheated with a woman in Italy on tour... a sea monster wanting some adventure and liberation would have easily slept with a land musician. The personality of the way the tower's decorated and even of Alberto seems kind of similar to that of Hector, and in an abusive relationship with Ernesto, he could've taken some time to raise Alberto, keeping him locked up out of confusion while Ernesto toured Europe, and been whisked away on the road again when Ernesto ran out of material. Alberto would obviously make an effort to forget his father, and Bruno could be a fake name assigned to him as a way to not even think about the real man.

Plot twist/Conspiracy: Massimo is Alberto’s true father. When Alberto ran away and there was that one scene where Massimo was eating alone, he was eating with his hands and the cat was growling at him. When Luca and the girl came back sayin Alberto ran away he wanted to go search for him alone. And maybe however his arm is gone was from him being hunted since he’s a sea monster and he lost his arm in the action of being hunted down but escaped someway. Idk its just a conspiracy that i think could be possible.

Alberto was kidnapped by a witch and cursed him making him turn into a monster everytime he touches the water but the witch lost Alberto because he falled and arrive to Italy and he lived there for years. The tower that he built wasn't from his father, just lied to Luca because Alberto had amnesia for the curse that the witch gave it. Alberto just remembers the name of his mother Aurora that was Scorfanno and not from his father Arthur that was Pendragon for the amnesia. Alberto hederate the hair color of his Grandfather Stefan. So Alberto's real and full name is Alberto Pendragon Scorfanno. Maybe in Luca 2 Alberto will go to England in the Paramo where will meet his parents.

there are 2 therys
no.1: This theory is about Massimo being Albertos father.As you can see, in "La Luna", The 2 fathers look exactly the same? but The father in "La luna" has a arm while Massimo (Guilias father) Has a missing arm. In one of the parts he jokes around saying that a sea monster bit off his arm but also has a tattoo of a sea monster? Meaning, he might've not been joking. Also, it seems like Massimo knows that Alberto is his son but not surely, AND Alberto probably doesn't know his father since he left at a young age. On Alberto's tower you could see a lot of these marks meaning that his father left for days, months, or weeks! You can also see that Massimo is trying to figure out if Albertos his son, He mostly takes Alberto on adventures than Luca. Looks like hes trying to also bond with him huh? Also, he hunts sea monsters but at the end he accepts Alberto and Luca for being the sea monsters. Weird huh? One last thing, in "La Luna" his father gave him a brown hat and at the end, when Alberto gives Luca a ticket, on Albertos head IS THE SAME HAT :0! Even if Alberto is different than the young boy in "La Luna", remember that his father left so long ago that his appearance might've changed.
Theory no.2:
Bruno also might've been Albertos father.As you can see, in a part of "Luca" when he made his own vespa, he said that there was a Bruno in Lucas head. Bruno is like a dad, Albertos "Dad" might've said "Alberto dont put that in your mouth" and others. Doesn't Bruno sound like a father?
