  • Pizza oven made from an oil barrel, insulated with rockwool. It's light enough to be transported on 2 wheelbarrel wheels. It works really well and the pizza's are excellent. :) Let me know if anyone's interested in more details on how to build it.

Hi, Edo Plantinga. I'm trying to make the same oven. I am, however, a complete beginner and would love to have more details. For ex. the size of the drum, the base or any other things. I really would appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Hi Biagio, the drum is a standard 210 liter drum, I believe. They are often recycled. Make sure you get one that stored food and not chemicals. The cost is around 10 euros probably.
I left around 5 cm of space between the two halves, for the insulation. The gap at the front should be around 60%-65%, according to these guys here: community.fornobravo.com/forum/pizza-oven-design-and-installation/design-styles-chimneys-and-finish/12371-dome-door-height-ratio-with. Happy to help if you have more questions.

Where do you insert the insulation rock wool ? Can you touch it from outside while it’s hot ? And does it lose heat fast ?

You insert the insulation between the two drums. After a while it does get too hot to touch from the outside. The insulation keeps it from losing heat fast. It probably retains heat better than a stone oven, but I have not done the math. Anyway, heat loss is not a problem in my experience.

excellent. Whas the cook time ? i was also thinking of addin more insulation or bricks around the whole hing with tails for looks,

Samir Lakhouiri the cook time is about 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the temperature. I don't think that adding more insulation would be worthwile, since it heats up very quickly and most of the heat escapes via the front opening anyway. Also, next time I would choose to use a thinner bottom brick plate, as it would make it heat up faster. The heat capacity of the brick would still be more than enough to get your 🍕 hot in no-time. Good luck! Would love to see the results!

Edo Plantinga Awesome. Mine is for commercial purposes in case I proceed with my food trailer business, so wanna maintain the heat for long periods of time.

Samir Lakhouiri ah I see, yeah in that case it would make sense. And in that case you may like the added heat capacity of the bricks too. If you use it inside the trailer, you may want a chimney too. Add it right near the front opening. Good luck with your business!

Your video is what a pro would make, the plan, the set up and editing. It can't get any better than that. A filmmaker mind.

You could make it from a plastic water butt to get even better insulation

how long does it take to get upto 450c from the first firing?

    • @EdoPlantinga

I'd say about 30-45 minutes. 450 degrees is pretty ambitious, but if you use a lot of wood it could be done I guess.

my mud oven takes about 2.5 hrs to heat up and needs a lot of wood, compared to that I think ur 1 will be better!
