With the massive price tag its really hard to recommend this game but man, Im having an absolute blast playing through 1 rn. The gameplay loop is both addictive and relaxing and I think most people that buy any of the games will have a great time. At a 50% or even 30% discount id immedeatly recommend it but not for 40 each or 80 for all 3 ....
I say this as an Etrian Odyssey fan: this collection is WAAAAY too expensive for what it is.

I fell in love with this series on 3ds, so I'm really happy to see that they haven't abandoned it (even if they are pretty expensive)
I paid 92$ to get the physhical copy from play asia.Never played the series but saw comments from fans that is worthy.
I love these games and will get them eventually but not for that price
Considering this is my favorite rpg series I understand that it is fair the review was made. I think if it was priced $30 dollars each while the collection as $60 it might've been an easier pill to swallow. If I remember correctly these games were marketed as a remaster more than a remake per se but I guess that the lower amount of content might still stand.
Thank you so much for reviewing this game/series. I'll admit the images on the eShop had me thinking I'd like to pick up at least one of them, but maybe if I wait, I can get them all for a little more than one of them right now!

I've played IV and untold 2 so I was interested but it seems it wpyld be better to wait for sale or just go for 3, which seems to be the most common recommendation
If these included the “Untold” versions of 1 & 2 I would consider it at full price. I’m such a fan of this, If they had gone in and made an “Untold” branch for EO3, I would definitely grab it. But as it is…. Yeah I’m gonna wait out a sale on this.

Man they did us dirty with the crazy high price. I broke down and got it and I honestly felt bad. But I haven’t had the chance to buy an expensive game I had before, so now that I can I did it and I’m loving the old etrian formula in my switch

I’ve been very eager for this review - thanks guys!! Especially Holden, I watched the Persona 3/4 Switch reviews too and you were really thorough and talked me into getting them when they had the bundle sale!
Anyway, I haven’t played all of the EO games, mainly EO3 and Untold 1 so I am not a *hardcore* fan but definitely a fan 😁. I was already sold on these games, they have been sitting in my wishlist since the announcement but the price is VERY off-putting. I think even for fans of the series. So as eager as I am, I still have too many unfinished games (like TotK) and I don’t need to drop $80+ on these immediately. I’m also seriously considering ordering the English language physical from play Asia if Atlus doesn’t have their predictable discount within the next 6 months (hoping for 30% off??).
With how quickly the Persona games went on sale I could totally see these eventually dropping in price in the near future

I was hoping to get the physical release of this from Play-Asia at some point (that price is certainly up there), however I can't tell if any of the menus will be in English. In the "further info" it says there are English subtitles, but I don't know if that's just dialog or it would include the UI. Do you happen to know?

I can. Sword of Mana (GBA) was a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure (GB). Adventure of Mana was a second remake without any of the innovations that Sword of Mana introduced. Very unfortunate as Sword of Mana is a masterpiece whereas Adventure of Mana feels like a free to play iPhone game.
It doesn't look like a game that I'll enjoy thanks for the review. It made me cement my decision

I've loved this series since the DS series started and this was a preorder for me to show support. But honestly? Anyone curious about the series should wait for a sale. If you only pick one, pick EO3.

I never played these.. Is it worth picking up on switch maybe physical. Or is it better to play on the DS.
For the same price, one could buy Tears of the Kingdom AND half a dozen saveloys.
Whether or not they made the map drawing feature easily usable was going to be my defining factor for sale or not as a long time fan. Seeing this in action, I am hesitant to sink in the same amount of time I did with with the first 3 games on DS.

Yea... the lack of touch screen mapping is a huge deal for me. Will just keep playing them on the 3DS.

the 3ds untold games are completely different Games. combining the 2 Games would be Like developing an entirely new game .... for the price one could expect it but people act Like the untold Version are just the Same Game with added Content

I was very excited when these ports were announced but I cannot fathom why Atlas chose to NOT include the content from the remakes. That aside, I cannot wait to jump into these games but given the prices, I'll probably wait for a sale. Thanks guys!
The price is pretty hard to swallow especially given the absence of the story content from the Untold versions.
The switch has a tonne of dungeon crawlers by now. I say grab Labyrinth of Refrain in a sale. It’s a cracker.
I have the untold games for 3ds so I'm waiting for a sale on the collection to get all of the extra characters.

I played the heck out of the etrian odyssee series, and every time, I'd eventually get burnt out and put em down. I just can't do it again! I think. Lol I would definitely dive into a brand new EO though- but they need to make some changes!

I've never given 1st person dungeon crawlers a shot really and I must admit and seeing as how there are so many of them now I feel like I'm missing out. Seriously considering giving this one a go if it ever goes on sale!
You might want to give "Vaporum" a try in the meantime. It tends to go on sale pretty often, and if you have a PS4, you can pick it up for less than $4. T he last time it was on sale for the Switch, it was $5.
@@collin1240: I'd say Vaporum is quite a dull dungeon crawler, especially compared to Etrian Odyssey.
Well, you should definitely give it a try, but preferably on a 3DS where the map function works better. For Switch, I don't really know any good crawlers, but if you end up buying any of these, then definitely go for the 3rd game, since that's the most polished version. The 3DS had even better games but sadly they're not available for Switch yet.
@@InfiniteGameReviews I never said it was a non-stop thrill-ride of an adventure. I said it was an often inexpensive option with similar mechanics that the OP can try to see if they like that kind of mechanic before plonking down the money on these.
I have all of the Etrian games on the 3DS that I've been able to get my hands on, and I enjoy them. But I like that kind of gameplay.
@@collin1240: My worry is that if someone buys a mediocre crawler game just to get a feel for it, they might come to dislike it completely. The better option, in my opinion, is to buy a better game. And it doesn't have to be too costly either. Pretty sure there are some decent crawlers out there, but can't come up with the names right now.
Good review but remakes are not remasters and I feel like people forget that too often or let it muddle the decision too much.
This is indeed a remaster of the DS version so maybe that's why they didn´t include the goodies and QOL's of the remakes in the 3DS tho.

I recently got myself Daggerfall and it kinda reminds me of it.
It basically turn based daggerfall with a party of up to 5… but just dungeons
80$ but there are 3 games in one its not that bad of a deal also on steam you can customise the inputs bcs of steam input witch should help with some of the awkwardness
I've been a fan of this franchise since the first game and played all of them. What bothers me now is that the dungeon screen is so tight and cramped. It just doesn't look very good. The widescreen is sorely missed.
I would have appreciated the updated graphics and quality of life improvements in these versions but I think I'll probably keep playing these on my DS.
I 100% agree with the review's conclusion. They are an essential purchase for me, but only when the price is discounted.The game is bound to lose some of the original games' elegance due to the Switch having the single screen, but a lower price would instantly overlook that little step backwards.
I personally like the auto mapping
Etrian Odyssey has always had limited auto-mapping (the option that automatically makes the floor). And, in my opinion, it’s a great option.
I’m not nearsighted so had 0 issues with seeing the map in handheld mode. Though I’d imagine if you are handheld could be difficult.
The mapping absolutely takes time to get used to. It’s not as good as the original but it does become second nature over time.
As far as the price goes it is expensive. That being said these are easily 40-50 hour games purely for the main game (not counting any post game things).
If you only get one, I’d suggest just starting with EO3. However it’s important to realize that this *is* a niche series, as the reviewer said. If you like it you’ll really like it. If not, it’ll be a waste of money.

I became a fan starting with IV and Untold on 3DS. This price point really bums me out.
This looked so good..... I was so hopeful. Game looks amazing..... but in etrian odyssey form the games are super pricy. Seriously why are dungeon crawls so pricey anymore?!

Yeah atlus knows their audience. Its a bit more than what i would have liked to spend. But never having played the DS games, this is the only way for me to play them without resorting to piracy. Im importing my physical edition from play asia.

Fun Fact: For the PC/Steam version of these games, Atlus/Sega decided to add the really pricy anti piracy software "Denuvo". But they forgot to add it in one of the file of these games so now they are hacked. Meanwhile, Atlus/Sega still have to pay for Denuvo. 😂

And the Asia version has English, but don't go for the Japanese version, that one doesn't have English.

Why is thr remake not in the remake? Because these AREN'T REMAKES. It's even in their title. They are HD REMASTERS of the original trilogy.

The biggest issues are the generic placeholder fonts and the price. This game would likely not attract anyone outside the Etrian hardcore fanbase with that pricing alone.
I figured if I had to spend that much money on a new game I'll get EO trilogy over D4. At least it's a Bogo

Value score of 11 is generous. It will take a 50% discount to get me over the line & I love this series. I struggle to see with all the great games out there how Atlus can attract newcomers at this price point.

Unfortunately this may be the only option to get these games as the only way to get them besides this are the DS and 3DS, which are the better experience, but probably cost an arm and a leg since the 3DS eShop are closed.
The other way is emulator, which companies like Nintendo hate, but may be the only solution to actually experience them.
Watch out if you play in spanish the 3rd entry at least is full of bugs in the ui. Cant believe this is 40 usd for such a poor tested localization
The Untold remakes added new classes, changed skills and added grimoire stones; game changers so massive it makes the games a whole new experience, even in Classic mode.
I have no doubt excluding them is an intentional choice to retain the original experience, but there is no excuse not to include them (and the excellent updated models/soundtracks) as a separate experience.
1:45 Remakes with less content than a previous remake of a game? They do this a lot actually:
Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters (In the case of 1 and 2, they had less content than 2 previous versions (being GBA and later PSP), FF4 3 previous versions(GBA, then PSP, then 3DS)) All the others save for FF3 had less content than the previous GBA releases, FF3 stands alone as it's the only one they entirely rebuilt, but the DS version debatably is the better version. FF5 being the only one they didn't redo the sprites in at all, making it kind of trash compared to the others sadly..
Pokemon ORAS (Less Content than Emerald)
Megaman X Legacy Collection (Megaman X Had Less Content than Maverick Hunter X, Megaman X3 didn't come with the PSone/Saturn changes, making it technically less content)

There's nothing wrong with sexual characters in games. Many women have large breasts and enjoy looking "sexy" with their clothing. I'm tried of people sex shaming.
Not everyone is or wants A-sexual characters in everything.
I have very bad eyesight. So I probably won't be picking this up. Such a shame I love the series.
Played this a lot on ds. They should just have made a new game imo.

You know at first I didn’t like the price and then I realized…if you don’t have a ds and these games you will be paying a waaay larger price tracking them down. If you have a switch or a POS PC you can play these games. After analyzing all that I think 80 is just fine. Everyone whining is probably the same guys who pay full price for manga or other Japanese consoles and games. We’re all paying for overpriced Nintendos and PlayStations and Zelda games and twenty first party games and then oh no this game isn’t allowed to charge original msrp for games that probably shot up in value over the years. And 40 bucks per original title if you don’t want to invest in the entire series is not even bad. Y’all are crazy thinking you can buy one singular atlus game for less than 29.99 a piece.

Another point that could be considered a negative is how bland the party you create can feel. I've played several of these games but only as demos (only actually buying but never beating EO4). What made me give up on them was the fact that your party is custom with absolutely no character or soul to them. You pick a name, choose a portrait and customize it a bit, and then obviously design their build and skills, but that's as far as it goes in regards to a party.
No dialogue, no cutscenes, no actual story relevance. They may as well be summoned zombies or some kind of animated puppets. It really makes the whole thing feel... pointless, like nothing matters all that much. Each game I hear does have some kind of greater overarcing storyline or mystery you unravel, but you're certainly not bringing along the chosen heroes of light or the rag tag group of unlikely warriors and royals like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, or Fire Emblem.
I just personally don't care about making my own guys when there is no difference between them and whoever else some other random person in the world made.

I think you would want to play the Untold versions. They have a story mode where the characters are voiced and respond to almost everything.
@@vjbd2757 maybe. I played persona q which had more or less the same gameplay and I loved that. I just couldn't get into the main games because after a while the team feels fake and empty and I'm just walking through hallways simply to walk through hallways.
Either way, I don't have my 3ds anymore and I'm not spending 30+ bob on these ones...
I appreciate what you say about them lacking soul; I have in fact given what amounts to titles for their role to several of them rather than real names. That didn't bother me greatly. I still liked traversing the maze whaling on the forest creatures with my meticulously trained and specialized elite mercenary corp. To each their own.
The fact you bring up Fire Emblem amuses me because I've never been a fan of it, but love playing Advance Wars. I'm still debating buying a Switch just for that remaster.
Oh, and I disagree the Untold story modes would sway your opinion. They have named party members that have story arcs, but compared to fully fleshed out RPG campaigns the plots are fairly lackluster. Better than nothing, I suppose.
I reeeeeally want these but the physical copy is insane and digital pricing no better! You’re right the Persona games are way better value Mark and I still haven’t even bought 3 or 4 because I have 3F on ps3 digitally and played 4G on Vita (but never kept it.) So how we should pay nearly £100 to buy them separately!?! Once again capitalism attacks the poor giving them the most expensive choice as the only viable one sadly. 💔

I know how extremely unpopular this genre is and how low of budgets they tend to have, but I really wish they could've ported Untold 1 and 2 and remade 3 into Untold 3
I understand their decision, but it's also a really dumb one. Atlus had access to Persona 3 FES, yet ported a terrible port of Persona 3 Portable instead, a game with a lot less content. They chose to bcuz FES had "bugs" and issues. It's clear they were too lazy to fix those bugs and would rather port the Portable and give that one a bunch of bugs and issues isntead
I can't help but think they did that with Etrian 1 & 2. But at the same time, going from Untold 1/2 to 3 would be weird bcuz 3 never got a remake. Regardless, porting the lackluster, outdated original 1 and 2 was a poor decision. Untold remade the game in so many ways. The games never started picking up until EO3
I will never understand how you can give a nonexistent story, and still have no effort animations on the battles, cant see characters, low budget art in general, and people still love these

The gameplay loop just feels great! These Games certainly arent for everyone but the combination of the simple but tough Combat, deep character customization and relaxing mapping Just feels right when playing.
