Mr. Tchaikovsky would be overwhelmed by the beauty of his own music, if he were to hear Sayaka perform. This lady has unbelievable interpretive powers. 10th time I'm playing this.

I had the privilege of hearing her performing live this very concerto in my country. I was sitting in the front row, right of the centre and had her throughout the performance looking down at me from between the conductor and the rostrum. It was a memorable experience, taking in every grimace and tortured expression on her face.

I have absolutely no idea what the underlying mood of this piece is but it's beauty manifests itself in Sayaka; just like when she plays Prokofiev.

This concerto has the nicest first minute of any violin concerto for me (with the possible exception of the Nocturne no 20 by Itzhak Pearlman), and also the most haunting start to the second part; but, having said that, it's a brilliant composition throughout anyway. It is so lovely to see Shoji start off with a confident smile of, probably, thanks to the conductor, acknowledging her cue. I love her most for this concerto and simply, at the moment, cannot get enough of either.

I think a good part of the performance in this case is in her expressions. She describes the whole song with her face as she plays. And no one can convince anyone that she's a bad violinist, even if she isn't the absolute best violinist in the world. Passion lends so much to a performance that it almost always impresses those viewing it, and for good reason.

I am always impressed with Ms Sayaka's performance. Just look at her facial expression to see how much she feels the music. It's so natural - let the music talk, nothing pre-planned and forced. As for Tchaikovsky, he was his greatest critic.

Wow, Kelly, she is a purist. Cannot think of a better word than, its as clean as a whistle..
She is very good. Very, very good. Class act. Petersburg can be proud of their favorite son when she plays.

I see there are two dislikes for this video. What's not to like about perfection? There are certainly other great interpretations, perhaps different, but none better. Tchaikovsky himself could hardly have imagined his great work being performed with such virtuosity. Totally marvelous in every way.

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion but to call Tchaikovsky 3rd rate is refuted by the fact that he is still among the most performed of the world's great composers. I shall be seeing this young lady play his violin concerto later this month and am eagerly looking forward to it after watching this outstanding performance. The increasing perfection of Asian orchestras leaves nothing between them and their western counterparts as is shown in this video..

Tchaikovsky is not 'just a ballet composer' he's 'the ballet composer.' Whether his other works are structurally sound or not doesn't stop them from being chosen for performance by orchestras and performers of the highest rank. Where melodic expression is concerned, he has no equal.
