Where was this information when I was deciding what to do with my life 20 years ago?! Haha! Oh well, maybe I can convince my son to get into it!

When you went to 4th phase as an OS how hard was being a helsman/watchstanding? Did you have to do it a lot?

OS don’t usually stand the helm. And only some ships are they used as “standby” watchstanders. My OS ship I only stood watch for 3 days ( 6 hours straight) during a high pirate likely hood area.

Hello! I have a question. I am interested in doing the apprenticeship program. When I go to do the physical and drug test. Do I do the coast guard one? Or the Seafares ones? The lady I spoke with who works at Occucare, the place I was told to go to do that, asked me which one I’m doing. Also, while I know ADD and ADHD are disqualifiers for the military, are they for the SIU? And if so, should I get a waiver from my primary healthcare provider for when the question comes up from the doctor I’m doing the physical with?

Do both physicals and you will need to get waivers.

@@northwestsailor526 thank you for responding. I also had some interest in going in as a C Card. But for some reason, the person I called at my local Hall kinda fought me on it and said I couldn’t do that. Why is that?

@@p0ttbitz247 It’s better to go through the apprenticeship and come out as a B-book member. You’ll have a easier time finding jobs. If you go in and join as a c-book you need to get all the training on your own time and dime before joining.
