    “He must’ve been using it for some kind of artistic purpose” is the most horrifying logic I’ve ever heard. CP is illegal because it’s made through the sexual abuse of children, supporting that industry in any way and for any reason is morally reprehensible.

    As a CP ring, with members in the *several hundreds,* has been uncovered in Germany like a week ago, I can confidently say it's not just manga artists. It's just that manga artists get more exposure in the media.

      He has apparently imported old (80s and 90s) nudist magazines like "Jung & Frei". There is quite a huge grey area around this here in Germany and owning these is not strictly illegal as long as you don't do it like Sebastian Edathy (he is the reason why it's now a grey area). It seems like the monsters who do this, are often having a lot of authority which the child can’t really reject (that’s the result of one of the commissions published some days ago) or the child gets (majorly mentally) overpowered by the monster and manipulated to even offer the actions. For example if the monster was a trainer and the victim wanted to do sport professionally, the trainer made clear that this career is over if the victim isn’t more willing and offers some actions. Totally disgusting. One trainer even got in jail, but now he is training again teenage girls which was his victim group. Absolutely horrible.

When a woman who I grew up with was killed by her adopted daughter and her friend for 100 €, the judge said it was the victim‘s fault because of her sexual orientation (which was in no way related to the crime) and sentenced the two murderer to two and five years of jail, but they could get out of jail after a super short time because of „Bewährung“.
      I could continue with this kind of stories almost infinitely. I remember how a judge wanted to change it, but she committed suicide after several things.

    I think the reason its "always manga artists" is a stigma/popularity thing. With manga artists drawing certain types of content, it creates a stigma that puts them in that category, so when that happens, it becomes profitable/expected to report on it. I feel that there is many cases you just never hear about because its just never covered in the news. I feel that may actually be the the harm of many of the artists that live normal lives.

It's just when they chose to be a manga artist, I feel like maybe they chose an artistic method to create a world they can get access to CP without breaking the law. But then when they started their career as a manga artist, their reputation got better and their ego got bigger, so now they have nothing to fear and that's when they decide to commit the crime.

    • @arnieorton424
      @arnieorton424 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I think there's another reason why this is frequently happening to older people in Japan. First off I'm not defending CP. A lot of older Japanese people grew up in a time where there was no concept of CP and believed this was just normal. CP was actually only banned in Japan in 1999 because the Japanese government wanted to look good to the west. So for a lot of Japanese people growing up at that time that was a huge culture shock. Kenya Suzuki is 40, that would mean he was about 18 when the ban on CP was implemented in Japan. So I could imagine as a growing adult this would have been hard for him to accept since it's totally different from what he and a whole generation of Japanese people grew up with.
      To put this into perspective, some psychologists believe that 25 and not 18 is when a person is mentally mature to be an adult. Now imagine if suddenly governments declared that 25 is now the legal age. I would believe it would be hard for a lot of people to accept that suddenly a 24 year old is a minor, and almost all the porn that they are used to watching is suddenly classified as "child porn". Or that people who are above 25 who were dating people aged 18-24 are suddenly declared as pedophiles.
      Again I'm not defending CP, I just think this is a case of culture shock or people having a hard time adjusting to modern times.

Unfortunately I work in juvenile corrections and the current statistic is 89% of all juvenile offenders have been sexually traumatized under the age of 12. This doesn't include regular abuse IE beatings, starvation, etc. People act upset in America then conveniently turn their heads and move on. Our own Child Protective Services will return children to these homes or "schedule" visits well in advance to give guardians time to put on a good show. I truly wish we'd do more. We can do more to combat this epidemic. Trafficking of children and teens is now the business of gangs in America too. They're moving away from drugs because exploiting children is more profitable and easier to get away with in the U.S.

The fact these crimes are in the news in japan is because the perpetrator is a public figure. If the guy was a plumber you would not see it in the news. JK Rowling and Lovecraft have series that people adore and love with it even bringing people together and yet those authors have really bad views on certain groups of people when they talked in public (or in lovecraft's part when he was alive). There comes a point when a piece of art becomes more about what it makes you feel rather then whatever the author is about. That means that those who love the Manga should not try to defend the Mangaka just because they like the Manga. But thats just a view I have at least.

Most of these people wouldn't actually do anything to a child unless you lock them up with one for a few days even if they do happen to like children that way (though honestly this goes for most people when they're locked into a room with someone they're attracted to. At some point the urge is going to take over and with someone always there, there's nowhere for it to go). Statistically the people who do things to children are people who tend to put themselves in a position where they think they can get away with it. So it tends to be teachers, sports club people, friends of the family or even relatives. Someone who isn't above doing things with a real child or has actual CP may also enjoy loli-stuff, but... not everyone who enjoys loli-stuff enjoys CP or would do anything with an actual child.

    Of course, there is a definite difference between real CP and drawings. But I also think it’s narrow minded to not recognize that drawings themselves can be problematic. The drawings desensitize people and culture to real life CP, and also enable these creeps. Rational, normal, socialized people will understand the difference and the line between the two. They know better than to cross that line. But the fact is, there are a lot of people who use these drawings as sexual gratification because they can’t have the “real thing”. It’s like enabling a drug user by giving them liquor instead. I also think the underlying misogyny in Japanese culture plays a role in why it’s so “normalized”, to the point that it’s just widely accepted, and these creeps just got a slap on the wrist. I’m not trying to say everyone that reads loli is a creep, or that it’s wrong at all. To each their own. But hopefully some people can also recognize the double standard and hypocrisy in it.

Almost every week I catch random adult men talking to kids through the chain link. This is to prevent further trauma to the child, but it's why you never hear about these cases.
      As for overreacting to ppl talking to kids, we're literally trained for this. If a man walks by with his dog and the kids go ham over it, it's not necessarily a red flag and you can just watch. I don't know. I'm a Japanese "otaku" myself who got schooled about the whole thing by an uncle who grew up in the heat of the "otaku boom" but I think the culture has a deep and self-aware history of allowing/making a space for people with legitimate pedophilia - Many of them see themselves as outcasts who deserve sympathy (and though in some ways people who do recognise their issue and are trying their best to tackle it do to some extent in my opinion) and we all know the roots of the manga/anime fan mindset come from similar places. Joey, I'm sure you know that a lot of the evidence to the connection I'm talking about here are only really available in Japanese. Maybe that's what you could help reveal in a video or something.

    Honestly, I think its just a numbers game. There are literally thousands of mangakas in japan, there are bound to be a few pedos mixed in there just like in any other job. The jobs that really attract pedos are those jobs that have direct contact with children, which mangakas usually do not have. You need proper statistics and not to rely on just a few random cases that get spotlighted, to see if there really are any real dark trends... and even then its hard to tell since many hide themselves. But I think we currently have a bigger issue with people who are open about it, call themselves MAPS and try to get pedophilia to become acceptable.

    Yeah, this has been a pretty notable cultural issue in Japan since before I even got into anime back in the '90s in my teens.
    People absolutely know it's wrong, but it doesn't carry the same stigma it does somewhere like Australia or the United States.
    I mean, we do know what happened with Watsuki's case. His publisher suspended him for something like 6 months, delaying the Kenshin Hokkaido Arc, and he ended up having to pay around a $1,700 fine (that's the rough amount in USD). That was literally it.
    We're finally getting to where society is going to start weeding out a lot of this, hopefully, but even the punishments in Japan right now for these acts are ridiculously light. Some things really have to change with the law and the justice system over there.
    That said, some of these are just really upsetting. I have '悪即斬' literally tattooed on my chest because of my love of Kenshin from my younger years.

      The thing with Shimabu allegations is that the women were 16 at the time, and from what I heard the website he solicited service was for people over 18, so the women lied about their age. And he was arrested, because prostitution is illegal in Japan. The age of consent in Japan, at the time was 14, so Japan doesn’t consider it pedophilia, compared to USA.

    I am no expert but if you frequent doujin sites enough, loli content is regularly shown there. While there is a big distinction between loli and CP, they do still overlap in interest, which is why some folk may blur between the two. Mangaka artist and doujins kind of go hand in hand, so that where i see the pattern.

    Well without trying to defent them or anything but..
    Considering the number of authors out there and that has been around ever since the numbers you mentioned are not really high or particularly strange, statistically.
    These artists were idiots but again statistically, you might not want to hear it but pick any profession and you will find the same.
    In these cases you read about it in news because they are famouse but cases we don't hear about that's quite something, usually it comes to more pronounce cases which even get to news.
    Why did at some points numbers of rape cases and such exploded in Hollywood, it's not like any industry is clean of any of this, they are the same people as other anywhere else.
    Why people who are behind some popular brands get brought to headlines, isn't strange, it happens daily with various stuff.
    When it comes to these couple manga authors, I wonder if when it was found in some cases they started paying more attention to others? It's pretty common. An extreme case are middle east terrorists, it doesn't matter if you are one or not, come to USA on a plane and you are on a list, everyone sees you like that, poeple like that get more often checked by border police, regular police, ...
    Again, I have no idea why these people particularly in this profession but it's certainly not strange. Stastically the strange thing is why media and police are having troubles catching the rest in other places ;).

      Millions. From all walks of life. All across the world. We only hear about the high-profile cases like the Weinsteins or famous manga artists.
      And since no police force on earth has the kind of resources needed to go after everyone they tend to focus on cases they know they can prosecute or instances where they can locate and ave kids. This is not a fun subject to research.

    Maybe it has something to do with the type of people who become manga artists.
    Drawing manga seems from an outside perspective like a fringe hobby that attracts socially awkward nerds. This could lead to sexual immaturity which manifests as being stuck at attraction to pre-teens. Couple that with the mangaka lifestyle being one of constant work and little to no chance of social exposure to make them graduate from this infantile sexual state , that could possible lead to mangakas being in the higher risk group of this crime type.
    Now this is just a bunch of armchair psychology on my part, but it is interesting when you consider that one anime of the past year, mushoku tensei, has the mc pretty much going through this. He was isolated at a critical point in hus adolescent development and then overexposeur to the more degenerate parts of the internet with no outside world to balance it leading him to have a fundamentally flawed perspective on sexuality. This then takes him years of hardwork and fuck ups to even begin to undo.

    • @ENKAI8
      @ENKAI8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "higher risk group of this crime" or they're just easier to capture and expose but there's too many huge group of people that are into cp it's just kinda depressing that now every artist feel like they're going to be accused of things like these because of what they do. Take into account about the culture as well though, Japan doesn't even punish them the way other countries do for this crime.

    • @Mercure250
      @Mercure250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I doubt that attraction to pre-teens can be explained through sexual immaturity. Sexual immaturity can explain many things, but I don't think this is one of them. At least, you acknowledged it was armchair psychology on your part, and it's not like I know much more than you either.
      I think the more likely explanation, as some people pointed out in the comments, is just the fact the news are biased and will report about well-known people instead of some random people nobody cares about. Considering the number of mangakas out there, it's not surprising that some of them will be involved in such things.
      What we need to look at is the proportion of manga artists who did get involved in this, compared to the general population. If it's significantly higher, then we can start looking for an explanation. Before trying to explain a phenomenon, make sure the phenomenon does actually exist.

      That’s possible, but I think the issue is people who are into that are sometimes attracted to professions where they can be around children. So it happens to priests, teachers/school admin, daycare workers, and all manner of other jobs too. Though I agree, my first thought after hearing this was “why is it so frequently manga artists?”
      You should remember though people like this have been people with romantic partners their age and they have been married before too. So it’s not always being incapable or not mature. I don’t know why people do this though. Couldn’t tell you because it’s beyond me.
