Session view is truly how ableton was meant to be used, arrangement is literally just like cubase or fl or any other software you can get EXCEPT a daw you should check out called Bitwig. Its made by the devs of Ableton but its taking things to the next level
It's the opposite for me.. I'm goofing around in session view all the time and often don't make it to the arrangement, because I find a new idea experimenting and start over in a new project It's a curse
PixelHerbs: if you have problems with getting into the arrangement view, there is a nice way with a controller (preferably the push 2). You can just hit the record button and the jam with your session view, use effects, activate and deactivate clips, etc. Everything will be recorded into the arrangement view. Maybe you need a couple of takes, but once you‘re happy with the recording you then actually have a full song and can just tweak everything and make it sound smooth.
This was actually the single most helpful overview of the session view I’ve found so far. I bought Ableton a couple months ago and have been exclusively in arrangement view...knowing im missing out on Abletons best features. Someday I’ll be competent enough to have something i can call a “workflow”. Right now I’m still spending hours figuring out all the buttons haha
I'm a Session View fanboi from the early days but I learnt a few things just watching this. It's easy to forget what made Ableton so revolutionary in the first place.
you probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
Dude, no shit, I have been using primarily Session view and hate Arrangement for setting up an idea because I have to assemble it all even though I can play Session live and well, but I had no idea that you could record what you are doing in Session onto Arrangement! This is a game changer and a big help
your tip in Dan Griffin's podcast about starting off building 3-4 drum grooves in session view brought me here. just doing that in arrangement view made all the difference stoked to try this.
As someone that has always used session view in this fashion, this was a pleasure to watch. This guy gets it. Didn't know about removing stop buttons. Definitely a game changer for me.
Wowserz! This right here is THE tutorial. I was already using session view (why I switched from LMMS to Ableton), but this video explains so well how to come up with a whole song structure off of one hook.
It's good to go back and forth between session and arrange view, when I lean too hard on session view I end up having a hard time getting past a solid loop or breaking from the grid. Both views help inspire different types of songwriting. Thanks for sharing these tips!
Wow, thank you so much. I've been using Ableton for 3 years almost, and have never used session view even once because I didn't understand it. What's funny is, I always press tab out of habit without even thinking about it. Now, I'm actually gonna experiment with it.
Starting using this my last three or four track ideas, and my track quality has sky rocketed. I do all of my automation as well within the clips. Definitely something everyone should be starting their tracks with if using Ableton, otherwise you may as well be using Cubase because you are not using Ableton correctly.
"because you are not using Ableton correctly." ... ehem?. no matter how u choose to work in ableton u aren't "using it incorrectly" diffrent workflows is a thing fam
I completely agree, but the main part of using Ableton is the Session view, if you see any basic master class or class in general put out by Ableton they all say to use the Session view because that is the main component of what separates Ableton from Cubase, or FL Studio. Your basically cutting what the program can do in half.
yeah but there's a bunch of features in ableton beside session view ... not to mention all the native live devices) like it's not like ableton is part session view n part the same as fl studio ..... at all - all daws are different. yes ableton has session view and clip launching that's really handy in live performance situations. but so is warping clips, warp modes, midi editing, abletons intergrated devices so on and so forth. session view is one of the key features that makes ableton unique. it's not half the program
I compose in the session view also and this allows me to do alot of shit, such as chaining sequences of clips so they trigger sequentially independent of what scene is actually playing.I forgot what its called but that allows me to randomize or vary any instrument pattern any way i want. I wish i remember what its called because its honestly one of the best parts of ableton and i rave abkut it all the time. The only thing i use arrangement for is for is to record any live performance that extends multiple scenes.
Moochos Gratiarse bro. The first time I started to understand the rationale of Session view and how it interfaces with Arrangement view. Also the use of the little orange arrow icon that's been eluding me all this time. Much appreciated :) 💕
Underbelly your 'journey with me' learning style really helped me a lot get my head round the session view in Ableton, having used the arrangement view all my life on various DAWs. I wasn't quite convinced by the session view, but now I definitely see the value in it, as a great way to kick off ideas and structure a song without going through the 'pain' in the arrangement view. I've already completed a track in session view, now hoping the arrangement view in Ableton Live 10 is as good as, if not better, than for example, Reaper. Though I really like a Reaper a lot too. Thanks again...
oh man your videos are indescribable good and helpful, I'm working in ableton for months now, and I always return to your videos to recall something that I forget how to do.
This is the most useful tutorial I've seen in a long, long time. I always work in session view but since I suck at producing I was doing it all wrong. Thank you Underbelly, you're the man
Session View seems to be the best option to later import segments/clips into FMOD or Wwise, for interactive video game music design! Thank you so much, dude!!! Now, you shall not be called a dingus anymore!
dude, these videos are the best. I feel like twice as confident in my ableton skills since i've found these videos, and that was only like 2 months ago.
wow, that was actually really-really informative and helpful! i don't mean that your other videos are not, but i feel really greatful to you right now because you showed me the way of session view!
Yep. I always start out with scenes. I've been going to arrangement later and later. Never thought of recording a performance though. I just drag it onto the arrangement button on top if I just want to explode out an 8 to 16 bar loop. I like this way too
I started using Live to get away from composing in Arrangement View! I even MIX in Session View. THEN, I write the arrangement using Session View into Arrangement View. Think of Session View as a BIG clip board that you can test ideas out against each other by launching/playing clips on the fly.
As previously mentioned, I've only worked with a loop based system, just like in the session view you displayed here. This is a big plus for me while on my search for a DAW and this puts Ableton back on top of the list. Quick question: Is this feature available in most other DAWS as well?
Hi,great video!May I know what button should I press if I want to play all the scenes from top to bottom smoothly in session view?So I dont have to press it every single time? Thanks
using session view loops can get painful when you're dealing with weird ass odd time signatures, polyrhythms, multifucks and all kinds of math nerd stuff. anyway, love the way you explain stuff :)
Awesome track man. Have you any recommendations for a cool midi controller to launch scenes , and also be able to say affect the freq cut off of an autofilter , thanks !!! And continued kudos !!! Brilliant
I love Ableton! I love the session view. I refuse to use anything else. You should be a millionaire, all your information is on point in all of your post!
Dude I've been intimidated by session view forever and this video made it look so easy and natural, thanks man
Same bro!
Session view is truly how ableton was meant to be used, arrangement is literally just like cubase or fl or any other software you can get EXCEPT a daw you should check out called Bitwig. Its made by the devs of Ableton but its taking things to the next level

@@marlon1oo1 same lol
Hi. You're Underbelly! And we suck at producing.
Phuture Collective oh hey
lmao super true
Wowzers
I feel like the torture of listening to the constant "wowzers" was my payment to the devil for the knowledge I gained watching this video.
Quite accurate
Wowzers
Your pleasure*
Nah man, part of the fun and the schtick

I had no idea you could remove the stop buttons! Yesssss... thanks Underbelly
Yeah I feel like this could be a thing even some advanced producers don't know yet
dude this changes the GAME
I would think you would just copy down the clips you still want. Ableton has some weird ways of doing stuff
you probably dont give a damn but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Finley Quinton instablaster ;)
This is, no BS, the best session view tutorial I have found so far! Thank you, Sir!
I hear you, absolutely the same for me. This is pretty close to what I was looking for. Thank god for Underbelly!
Dude, no shit, I have been using primarily Session view and hate Arrangement for setting up an idea because I have to assemble it all even though I can play Session live and well, but I had no idea that you could record what you are doing in Session onto Arrangement! 6:10 For the first time, we hear "Wowzers?", not "Wowzers!"
I laugh so much at that word lmfao
That not a question, that's a statement
LAMOO

Yeah it's easy to get stuck in the loop.
Wowzers,I didn't realize how powerful the session view is to get your ideas/flow down. Nice tutorial and cool track
even after using ableton for three years, your videos still point out numeruous nifty nuances previously unknown. thx boi

It forces us to think about our track in term of phrases and record it all live at the end. Best song structure tip!
release this
No you
This is the most useful tutorial I've seen in a long, long time.
This is actually a good idea! It will make the song more genuine!
Man, after tens of different courses and videos, I finally understand how to use the Session View! Wowzers!
do you think you can expand on this as well? maybe make different genres within session view?
dude, these videos are the best. I feel like twice as confident in my ableton skills since i've found these videos, and that was only like 2 months ago.
Not only did I learned a lot . I actually smiled and laughed. Thank you so much underbelly!
wow, that was actually really-really informative and helpful! i don't mean that your other videos are not, but i feel really greatful to you right now because you showed me the way of session view!
definitely one of the best videos you’ve made. can you please make a video series on session view for live performances?
Trying to use this section more. Finding it a lot faster getting the main ideas down
Röth I agree man, kinda weird to get used to at first but after 2-3 tracks i got the hang of it
Wow, I've never realized the real use of the sessions view until now, thank you!!
dude this sounds remarkably like Wave Racer. Well done I love it.
Yep. I always start out with scenes. I've been going to arrangement later and later. Never thought of recording a performance though. I just drag it onto the arrangement button on top if I just want to explode out an 8 to 16 bar loop. I like this way too
this is my favourite episode so far!
This is the only tutorial video ever that made me laugh out loud in the first 20 seconds of the tutorial.
I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who doesn’t use arrangement view to make beats :)
Dude you are insanely talented and funny. I love your format and your lessons.
bro this just simplified this for me in one video, you’re a king sir
had no idea you could cue automations from clips in session view like that, this is life changing
Favorite thing to do is to do arrangements by jamming with my launchpad and using it to launch different scenes, controll effects chains etc.
Still relevant man... Thanks so much! Wowzers!
That's it, I am going to make my own "I love Underbelly" t-shirt with your picture and wear it everywhere. You are amazing! I wish I lived in L.A.
This is why a dual monitor setup is nice for Ableton, just use both all the time.
this is an inflection point in my existence
My whole life is a lie.
LOL!
*"Your Life Is A Lie - MGMT"*
Sincerely, thanks man.
this video changed my life. thank you papa underbelly.
This is amazing, thank you so much! Any ideas on how to deal with pickup notes for the session view? Thanks again :)
wowzers nice track. I spent months jamming in session view before i ever recorded anything on the arrangement window.
I was trying to figure that out all day. Thanks 🙏
obsessed with the high pitched vocal track in this
I started using Live to get away from composing in Arrangement View! I even MIX in Session View. THEN, I write the arrangement using Session View into Arrangement View. Think of Session View as a BIG clip board that you can test ideas out against each other by launching/playing clips on the fly.
I learned so much from this video and the best part was I already say 'wowzers' a lot so this part actually made me stronger if anything
The content here is golden
This is how I started and it was so helpful.
Wowzer this beat gave me so many feelings
This is the best tutorial video I've watched.
Man... Thanks for this! Best way to learn.
As previously mentioned, I've only worked with a loop based system, just like in the session view you displayed here.
This is a big plus for me while on my search for a DAW and this puts Ableton back on top of the list.
Quick question: Is this feature available in most other DAWS as well?
Only in Ableton
Good to know. Thanks!
OMG! Super nice sense of humour! Nice mix also.
session view is goated, reminds me more of FL, the way you can just stack patterns and then take it into arrangement at the end.
It's like sequences on MPCs. Ableton is the truth!
I’m such a fan. You rock underbelly.
Just discovered your channel and I'm loving the style you have and the content. Very funny and informative. Give my love to Uncle Joe
Damn man!!!! It is the best ableton video ever! I was looking for this for years :D
Brilliant video mate, live the sarcasm
Sick video man thanks!
you're actually a great teacher
Hi,great video!May I know what button should I press if I want to play all the scenes from top to bottom smoothly in session view?So I dont have to press it every single time? Thanks
Excellent explanation, subscribed!
Very helpful video, thank you.
Also, if you don't have a launch pad, you can assign the whole "play row" button to a computer key; way faster when you're recording.
Session has always been my go to. Thanks for this video. Check it.
I needed this
Wowzer! Thanks for this!
great video Underbelly, really helpfull, thank love you mate
Wowzers! I'm a bit late for the party, but this was informative and hilarious!
Much needed, thx again dad
Helpful! Thank you!
ohhhh! did not know you can delete stop button clips! Thank you
using session view loops can get painful when you're dealing with weird ass odd time signatures, polyrhythms, multifucks and all kinds of math nerd stuff. anyway, love the way you explain stuff :)
This might be the most useful YSAP yet, ya dingus.
oh my lord this beat. You are the Bob Ross of beats my friend.
Awesome track man.
Have you any recommendations for a cool midi controller to launch scenes , and also be able to say affect the freq cut off of an autofilter , thanks !!! And continued kudos !!! Brilliant
I find myself using "Wowzers" in my day-to-day vocabulary after watching your videos...
This Channel's host is great! Subscription is worth it!
Much needed
thank you for your sharing,Very inspiring
Can you fully produce that and publish it? It was dope.
awesome tutorial, cheers!
love the bitbird vibe on this throw some guitars and a phrase on the drop: "make some noise for this plant"
**Stops DJ set for thousands of people and hundreds of thousands later online** "Someone just gave me dis plant... make sum noise fer dis plant"
You're too funny man. Love the videos.
Dude...your a genius!
Interesting, I had started with session view and was intimidated by arrangement view. Session view is more familiar to DJs
I love Ableton! I love the session view. I refuse to use anything else. You should be a millionaire, all your information is on point in all of your post!
Seriously, I have paid money for sessions that were 1% of his material. Super respect @Underbelly
11 minutes and 11 seconds. Sign of the devil. This is an omen.
Great vids man
16 seconds in and i'm already chuckling
