    Very informative. I have studied music theory for years but still come away with something new I can apply. These lessons have actionable steps that a person can take and gives the reasoning behind it in a very clear and concise way so that the concepts can be applied to different situations. Great teaching and great video!

      Yeah Underbelly is a deceptively great teacher. I've been using Ableton exclusively for over a decade, and almost every video of his I watch there's something I actually remember after watching. Like simple shit that I have heard people tell me to use 1000x that for whatever reason just never stuck in my head. For example the duplicate button. Yeah idk why but I never used it. I've been duplicating and consolidating clips for over a decade, but this dude is the one who makes this stick in my brain. Why? Absolutely no clue... Maybe it's because making people feel stupid for not knowing things is a better way to get them to remember things than explaining why it's useful... Regardless, this channel is more useful to me than pretty much any other production channel. With the sole exception of Kush After Hours with UBK. Something about that dudes calm, soft spoken demeanor lends itself well to teaching, and he's also a world class engineer/hardware designer. For real though this channel is the best thing I've come across, especially for basic concepts that are consistently skimmed over by even some of the best PAID production/songwriting classes, courses and videos.

      It’s something a lot of people who teach things don’t understand; you need to be able to apply the logic to other scenarios. Most people say stuff like ‘okay so use this exact plugin, moves these knobs this way no you’ll get this exact sound’ but don’t really go into why or how that works.

      I have a beginner music question. How can you differentiate betw 5/4 and 5/8 or 5/16 without seeing it written down? Thanks

    • @IsaiPR
      @IsaiPR 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NN-sp9tu sometimes it's just easier to count 8 instead of 4. Really depends on the song and it's bpm.

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NN-sp9tu You can't. Note values are relative, not absolute. We can say that 8th notes are twice as fast as quarter notes, and 16th notes are twice as fast as 8th notes. But what exactly is a quarter note? Honestly, you just need to decide it yourself. There is really no difference between 8th notes in 5/8 and quarter notes in 5/4.
      But there are certain conventions that written music follows. Usually 5/8 is used when you feel the music more in two than in five (meaning that the pulse in 5 is so fast that you don't really hear each pulse as a beat if that make sense). 5/4 is used when you actually feel the music in five (you would count it as 1 2 3 4 5 instead of 1+ 2++, or 1++ 2+). 5/16 isn't really used as a stand-alone time signature. It would basically suggest a measure with one beat that's subdivided into 5. But something like 10/16 or 15/16 could be useful. 10/16 has two main beats subdivided into 5 - basically, it's 2/4 with quintuplets. 15/16 would be three main beats subdivided into 5 (3/4 with quintuplets).
      In other words, /8 and /16 time signatures are usually used when the pulse is felt as the subdivision (the difference between /8 and /16 is that /8 is used when each beat gets 2 or 3 subdivisions, and /16 is used when each beat gets 4-7 subdivisions). /4 is used when the pulse is felt as the beat. This isn't an absolute rule, but it is how these time signatures are most commonly used.
      If you aren't notating music, then the bottom number doesn't really matter. You can write exactly the same thing with twice as fast note values, and nothing will change if you adjust the tempo accordingly. Quarter notes at 120 bpm sound the same as 8th notes at 60 bpm.
