I will readily admit I do not have kids, but one thing I always do when flying to the Big Island, is get a morning flight to Hilo. Spend some time in Hilo, and then take the drive over to the Kona side.
Hilo is a peaceful place and that saddle road or up through waimea is a beautiful drive. Thanks for sharing.
I was planning on taking my 14 month old to Kauai and staying at Koloa Landing Resort, but now I'm thinking maybe I should do Maui..... I thought I saw lots to do that a child that old would enjoy. It seemed like there was lots of calm water to swim in, the chocolate tour seemed interesting, and the drive to Waimea Canyon. We really enjoy authentic experiences and lush surroundings which is why we were thinking Kauai. Should I book Maui instead??

It was awesome! 1989 VW camper van. Drive like a rock but so much fun o the Road to Hana.
My dad and I are coming for the first time I booked Hawaii but not sure if it’s a good choice as he is in his 70’s . What would you recommend?
For the Molokini , what would you say the age recommendation is for kids? Do you think at least 1 year old or 2 years old?
Older the better. It is a couple of hours or more on a boat
