Do you guys know anywhere that accepts unopened food donations? (preferably Princeville or Hanalei area) we will be on Kauai in a few weeks and always like to donate any unopened/ unspoiled food at the end of the trip

Reposting this from a previous comment with some amendments - My wife and I have been to Kauai 12 times in the last 15 years, and were there last in May of 2023. This video is extremely informative. As someone that has been pretty much everywhere on the island, a few things to add from our experience:
One, if you want lots of sunny days on your vacation, stay on the south side of the island. The north shore is quite beautiful, but you will absolutely get rained on more.
Two, as they noted and I cannot emphasize this more - eat lots of local food! Village Snack Shop and bakery in Hanalei has awesome lunch and excellent pie! In Lihue, the best mac nut pancakes in the world and outstanding oxtail soup is in the diner at the Tip Top Motel. In Kapaa, we love Pono Market. In Koloa, the Koloa Fish Market and the walk up window at the Sueoka grocery store are both great.
Three, make use of the excellent farmers markets that happen pretty much daily somewhere on the island - particularly if you are staying in a house or condo that has a kitchen. The expensive sugar loaf pineapples are worth it. Trust me. We also stock up a bit at Costco in Lihue on the way from the airport to our condo.
Four, some of the best hikes anywhere in the world are on this island. There are a lot of websites like alltrails that have plenty of info on them. One of my favorites is the Awa'awapuhi Trail.
Five, consider making a donation at the humane society. They do amazing and tough work on the island. You can also take a dog out for the day - donation required - which is a lot of fun for both you and the dog!
Six, the coffee plantation is a nice place to visit for an afternoon. They also have ice cream for sale.
Seven, the Hanapepe Art Night is a fun time along the main street in town, a chance to see some local art and shop some local stores. The Talk Story bookstore is particularly great!
Kauai is beautiful and the people who live there are lovely and welcoming!

When I went ot Kauai, I got a hotel on the east side, to be more “central” to the north and south. But the current was strong there, pushing you down the coast. I did a Napali coast boat tour, going into the sea caves was amazing and a turtle was checking me out while snorkeling. Also, did a helicopter tour around the island - although pricey, it was absolutely amazing! Did a hike to the top of the cliffs on the Napali coast, which has spectacular views.

There is no mild waters on Kauai. Kalapaki Bay may be the one exception, but a large S E swell changes that. Anahola Bay would be my second suggestion, but onshore winds will add to the power of that shore. Kauai is the drowning capital of Hawaii.

    • @toddf7582
      @toddf7582 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@PDSalling I certainly can see that! I didn’t realize the current was so strong there. I’m glad I had flippers!

@@toddf7582 Kauai is a natural beauty. The shore is dynamic, to put it mildly.
I'm glad you had a safe trip. Come back soon. I love west Maui. The water is protected by the islands of Molokai and Lanai . In fact the calm waters stimulate visitors to attempt to swim distances of 1/4 mile off shore and more !!!
Maui is the shark bite capitol of Hawaii and the enticing waters may be the reason.
      Have a look, next trip.

I’m going in a few weeks and we booked with a tour out of Waimea. I intentionally did this so we could then spend the remainder of the day in the Waimea area, stop by the state park to see the canyon lookout. And on the way back, hoping to catch the sunset at Poipu beach. What’re your thoughts?

A major do is stay in poipu or Kapaa area as they’re pretty accessible to anywhere. 2 major don’ts are don’t rent a car from budget there, beyond terrible. The other is don’t cross the road assuming drivers are gonna stop when they’re supposed to, I’ve seen people get hit.

Kayak Kauai is highly recommended for a great experience. Also, the first two miles of the NaPali Coast Trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach is a great hike and a beautiful beach to explore but do not swim there. Reservations are required from the DLNR or take the shuttle as was suggested (I haven't tried that yet). My favorite farmers market is at Kauai Community College, Saturdays, 9:30am - 1pm.

We've watched just about everything you have on Kauai, but one thing I see missing is what to do on that final day when you're waiting for an evening flight. For example: where do we store luggage? Also, is there a place to take a shower and get ready for the flight that charges by the hour or is reasonable (besides YWCA)? Would love to see those ideas touched on, as it's the last day that's so troublesome. Thank you so much for all that you do and for the beautiful experiences you've highlighted. Mahalo

I remember watching a video in which you guys mention the beach being more than you expected, and not in a good way. However, I would strongly advise EVERYONE who visits Kauai (especially the North Shore) to go visit Tunnels / Cannons and snorkel or swim. That place is beyond beauty, and it hosts one of the most picturesque sunsets on the entire island.

I agree about airfare prices. Almost 3x higher than what we usually pay. Hoping for a sale soon…
